Very educational visit. The premises is stunning. The house itself is so beautiful. 2 reasons why we stopped by 1.) It was in the movie Django and Antebellum. 2.) It is on the way to Oak Alley plantation from New Orleans. This place too had an alley that had lined Oak trees. Tickets must be reserved online. It is great to know that your ticket prices goes to restoring the place and for maintenance on the property. Definitely a must go. Highly recommend to others. read more

I think of the three or so plantation tours I've done in New Orleans, this has been my favorite. The grounds, while very comprehensive and complete, are not the fanciest (a la Southern Oaks Plantation). However, the tour itself is the very very best. I had a local native, Renee, as my tour guide, and she is an 18-year veteran at giving the tours. Since it's just her, they only offer Mon-Sat 11:30 and 2pm tours. (She gets a little half hour lunch break in there.) + Experienced local guide + Tour includes Creole era (1700s French/German), Antebellum era (Louisiana purchase/slaves/America), post-war through Great Depression, after the Great Depression (restoration of house and grounds) + Comprehensive grounds with the original slave quarters, kitchen, garconnieres, pidgeon houses, 1900s boxwood gardens, Creole interior, and Greek Revival exterior + Owner cares for main house and is an avid period furniture collector + Senior discounts - Cash only - Limited tours (11:30am, 2pm, no Sundays) Renee is half Creole and half American. To me, it was always hard to understand what is a Creole vs. a Cajun or American. She does a great job of explaining it all: the relevant time periods, the change in ownership, the architectural and garden additions, the functions and placements of the various buildings, and even the difference in slave treatment during the Creole vs Antebellum periods. You can take pictures everywhere except the interior of the house, as it is still in use by the owner. As a history buff and a little bit of a school nerd, this was by far my favorite plantation tour in the Vacherie region. read more

3.5 stars because Peter could have gone deeper I could tell he was highly knowledgeable but very careful with his information. 4 stars because this is a private own business and beautifully preserved. To be honest the only reason why I decided to take a plantation tour was out of anger. I needed to answer the question why would someone make a business out of this. After touring Evergreen Plantation I had a new perspective. Although I am still very much angry my knowledge and depth of understanding has been expanded. I can further share different viewpoints and perspectives with others. It's important to have intelligent conversations and open conversations about difficult topics. The business and brutality of slavery and racism are those difficult topics. My next plantation tour I would like for those on the tour to share their experience in a brief post tour discussion. Great experience all around and if you enjoy history and the grandeur of colonial life in Louisiana Evergreen is a good start. Continue to seek the freedom of knowledge. read more

Did this as a 90 minute option on our all day River Road tour, and was out highlight of our tour. Our tour guide, Desiree, was a phenomenal wealth of information, even sharing pictures and stories of people that she personally knew who had lived there. She made it entertaining for our 12 & 14 year olds, as well as making you challenge what you thought you knew. The walk to houses down the back was an awesome reveal, along with the sing along on the way back and the group reenactments - highly recommended.....but only if you can get Desiree! read more

It's taken me a while to write this review because my tour here was so disappointing, but here it is. I absolutely agree with some of the 1-star reviews that haven't made it to the front page. Our tour was full of revisionist history. It was so uncomfortable. Our tour guide downplayed the horrors of slavery and instead tried to make light of it where she could. For instance, when visiting the slave cabins, she mentioned how the slaves there had Sundays "off" to do whatever they pleased ("besides leave, of course!"). She also tried to justify the plantation owner's decision to have slaves: "When her husband died, she was on her own. As a young mother with kids, she did what she had to do to make sure she and her children would survive. We all would've done the same." Um... NO! I'd never partake in the brutal and inhumane practice of owning slaves. But good to know slavery is such an easy decision for her, though. Even worse, the guide (a blonde, nondescript "all-American" woman) kept mentioning to the group how she would have had it so much worse back in those days than the slaves because "technically, I'm a Cajun, and we were despised even more than slaves! My life would've been so hard!" The audacity! I and the others in the group that had any sense were speechless. It (almost) pains me to write this review because the people who worked here that we encountered were so "nice" and pleasant. But this is 2018, and being nice but highly ignorant doesn't cut it. If you're someone that enjoys revisionist history to make yourself feel better, waste your money here. Otherwise, go somewhere else. read more

I wanted my 1500th review to be something special, so I chose Evergreen Plantation for this milestone. I don't even know where to start with this review, so I am going to apologize right now if I'm all over the map. My dad and I had been wanting to do the Evergreen Plantation tour for ages because a long long time ago we were related to one of the former owners. Yes, yours truly had a distant relative that owned this plantation in the 1900's and he was even the one who named it 'Evergreen'. Someone fetch me a hoop skirt and a mint julep, ASAP! Oh wait, my relative lost the plantation during the depression and now our family has no claim to the property. Womp. Never mind, '86 the julep. Anyway, we finally decided to hit the road and check out the former family estate. You start out at the visitor center, pay your $20 and sign the guestbook. Tip: if you sign the guestbook you get all your future tours for free. You meet your guide and follow him to the main house where the tour begins. Our guide was Kevin and he was fantastic! First of all, we were here on a hot July day and Kevin was good about keeping us in shady areas so that we didn't bake in the hot Louisiana sun. We started off in the back of the house with a brief history, we checked out the kitchen that is separate from the house and then we moved to the front of the house and eventually inside. Kevin made history come alive mixing the history of Evergreen with the history of New Orleans. A lot of things I knew, but a lot of things I didn't, so I was excited about the history lesson! The front of the house was incredible with the two staircases going up. Of course, this property has been used frequently in movies and it was nice to learn about the history of it all. There was so much grass in front of the place I wanted to take my shoes off and run barefoot around the expansive lawn, but I was trying to keep things professional, so I resisted the urge. Once inside, we peeked into the different rooms and Kevin told us the family history of all the people who have owned Evergreen. It turns out, Alfred Songy, added a lot of neat things around the house and his family was raised there. He lost the house because there was a terrible flood in 1927, disease wiped out the crops and that darn depression threw a monkey wrench into Alfred's lifestyle and the bank foreclosed on the place in 1930. He was allowed to finish his days there and the house was bought and restored in 1944. Finally, Kevin took us to see the slave cabins. This was pretty intense, just knowing the history of this space and imagining was life was like for the people who inhabited these cabins. Kevin told us a brief history of some of the slaves and we got to look into one of the cabins, which was really jarring for me. The history of it just hit me really hard. Trivia: Django Unchained and the new Roots mini-series were filmed on this property. Kevin told us some stories about how movie magic transformed the property into the film makers vision and how things were added and changed (not permanently) to add to the effects of the movies. This tour was fantastic and I think it's a "must" for locals and tourists alike- it's is an hour and a half and it is really interesting and the time goes really fast. The tour guide gives a lot of time so that people can take pictures and ask questions and it was interesting to learn some history about the nation's past and Louisiana's past. Robin, our guide gave us a great history of everything from the owners, the buildings, the house and geography from the mid-1700's - late 1800's. The main house is the original and was one of the few that didn't burn down as well as the slave quarters in the back. The trees are so beautiful and the history of the owners made this place so unique as it was run under French rules. The drive out to the plantation also really gives you a view of how swampy it is. Well worth it and recommend this tour to all. read more

If you've seen Django Unchained then you will recognize the front part of the house as Big Daddy's House. Beautiful property, and it was very interesting to see the original slave cabins (used up until the 1940's!). The guide we had was good but I feel like she should have more information for the house and the slave cabins, a lot of answers were "I don't know, that's just how it is". For $20, you get an approximate 1 hour tour with a very knowledgable guide (there are several). I went on a weekday, for the 1400hrs tour, and there were only three (3) people, so it was a very intimate tour, and made it that much more interesting. The Plantation is in unbelievable shape, and truly is a historic treasure for anyone interested in this type of thing. read more

The Evergreen Plantation has done a great job at preserving as much of the original conditions to the property. Many of the key property features are still in tact, to include 22 original slave cabins. The tour is full of story telling, visual materials, etc.. It's definitely work the price of entry. With that said, this tour can be interpreted as "Sugar" coating the gruesome slave era with a suggestion that the slaves were in agreement to living under capture, perform free labor in exchange for shelter. Gave it 4 start for its preservation, survival of centuries, and not a 5 start for its lack of true story telling. read more

What a great tour!!! Since watching the show Into the Badlands, I have wanted to visit this plantation, then when I found out it's also Candyland in Django Unchained I was all in!! Our tour guide Desiree was the best!!! She was so knowledgeable and animated, it made the experience that much more memorable. The plantation, grounds and slave quarters are preserved very well, all dating back to the late 1700s. The information provided by Desiree was also enlightening, she told us things I was not aware of, such as blacks that were free migrating to Louisiana from the Caribbean and Senegal. Really beautiful grounds and great guide. I think her name was Carly...something with a C or K in any case. She was really knowledgeable and readily answered all our questions. It's a modest for our standards place but with plenty of history and it's still a running sugar cane plantation. October-December is the harvest season so you see the trucks pulling in and out, which is cool to see. It's also where Django was filmed so my friend, who has seen the film, loved seeing the place in real life. This place doesn't get nearly as much publicity as Oak Alley but the oaks are incredibly gorgeous here. The path up to the parking area is lined with them & it's really quite breathtaking. You also get a feel for how incredibly rough life was for slaves. It makes you really stop and think. Definitely recommend this place. read more

Visited Evergreen in late-February during our stay in Plantation Country. Was really looking forward to visiting Evergreen since it is the only plantation to still have all of their original slave cabins - 22 in total - on site in their original location. We reserved a 2pm tour and were the only two persons on the tour! Our guide, Renee, was very knowledgeable about the plantation and local history, making the tour very informative and enjoyable. It was very quiet and peaceful at Evergreen while we were there. Actually seeing the double-row of slave cabins, lining each side of an alley of Spanish-moss draped live oaks, seemed almost surreal. It is amazing that they have survived intact, since many other plantations no longer have their original slave quarters at all. I would recommend a visit to Evergreen even just to see the cabins....they are definitely worth a visit! read more

Our tour guide "informed" (Term used LOOSLY!!!) our group on how slaves didn't leave because the slave masters had to shelter, feed and clothe them due to Code Noir. So slavery wasn't so bad because they were never beaten of forced to work. Yeah what the fuck!!! Do you know how that feels as a black person, amongst the tears of your ancestors to have someone say slavery wasn't so bad because they got baptized and got to eat. What the F man. I could not believe what I was hearing. I spoke with other members in the group who were just as disgusted and astonished by her statements. This planation is clearly from the slave masters point of view to make them feel better about the atrocities slaves had to endure due to their cruel nature and greed. I suggest The Whitney Plantation or the Myrtle. I cannot even express my disgust. Other than that, Our tour guide was unknowledgable about the history of the times as well as the architecture, slaves and current agricultural production of the area. The highlight of our day was truly Evergreen. A small group of only 10 others lent itself to an intimate and informative experience. Being able to wander the grounds and take the time to connect with the history of the plantation on a unique level was the highlight of our day. Hundreds of pictures later we left having a less commercialized and tourist-y view of the history of the area. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and interactive and the tour was personalized to our groups questions. We did a tour package with Old River Road Plantation tours and saw Oak Alley Plantation before. I actually thought about just doing Oak Alley, but then thought, I'm here in LA I should do the 2, and boy am I glad that I did! Evergreen absolutely blew Oak Alley out of the water. While Oak Alley is very aesthetically pleasing, the rich history that I learned at Evergreen was somewhat lacking there. I felt like I learned so much at Evergreen, and all of it was incredibly interesting. It was amazing that the structures were all original, and it gave a certain weightiness to it. I wish I could remember the name of our tour guide because she was absolutely amazing! She was fun and super knowledgeable, made sure to let us explore and get pictures, while also getting us lots of great info. I can't believe I could have missed this tour, today would not have been nearly as good! Can't recommend enough! read more

We almost skipped it because there wasn't too much advertised about it, but I'm SO HAPPY that we didn't! Our tour guide Desiree was FANTASTIC! I've tour LOTS of plantations throughout the Carolinas, Tennessee, Georgia, and Louisiana and I can honestly say this was the best one! Desiree does a particularly excellent job about telling about the history of Louisiana and New Orleans and really describes the creoles and their past well. She was also VERY entertaining! Wow what a privilege to be the first to write a review for this place. Evergreen Plantation was our 2nd stop on the tour and the one I really wanted to see since I had been to Oak Alley twice. Not a lot of tours company's offer a stop at this location. I'm guessing maybe because it's a privately owned plantation and still in operation growing sugar canes. This place has some serious acreage. I wanted to come here to see the still intact double rows of 22 slave cabins they have on the grounds. As we drove up and into the grounds you saw cows grazing and even some donkeys and llamas were around. We started the tour at the back with the smaller houses that were the (privy) bathrooms, guest quarters, boys house, kitchen and where the kitchen staff were located. Unlike Oak Alley the main house did not have a long walk way up through lines of trees. One of the attraction of the main house is the 2 spiral staircases on both sides of the house. As with other plantation there were no picture taking inside. As with most plantations there had been several remodels during each of the revivals. The house still had period pieces that were all very well kept and taken care of. There were also new things placed around as the house does get used personally by the owner from time to time. Next we walked out over to the long road to where the slave cabins were located. The road leading up to it were all lined with Oak trees most of them covered in spanish moss and were almost as old as the one's at Oak Alley. It was like going back in time as I walked up to the first cabin which was opened to be seen for tours. The cabins were very small. Each cabin was split down the middle making each half only a living space of 12x12. Each side was used by one family, so if they happen to be a large family it was pretty tight. Down the middle of each cabin was a fire place that opens on both sides so that each family can use it to cook and keep warm. It's amazing to see how well these cabins have withstood all the harsh weathers and other elements of that time period throughout 100's years. Our tour guide mentioned that there are often pilgrimages from Africa who come here and burn incense for their ancestors and ironically there was a few people that had just been there a week earlier. One cabin had a stool sitting up against the wall and I kept looking at it. In my mind's eye I saw an old man sitting there with old working hands and his face tired and wrinkled from the hard work they've endured running the plantation. I can't imagine how things have must have been like back then but I'm thankful for having come here to at least see what it looked like. Our tour guide was absolutely awesome. She had that Cajun accent that I so love to hear. She was very knowledgeable about the plantation, history of the owners and how life was lived back in the day! Since its still a working plantation there is not gift shop here so takes lots of pictures. read more

The Plantation offers student tickets for the price of $18. This place is notably one of the biggest, most intact plantations. Our guide was Renee. She was fabulous!! She was very knowledgeable and told quick but captivating stories on the past of Evergreen. Here you'll get a more "like the original" as possible. Things were replicated or moved only if they had to. The scenery was breathtaking!! The oak lined pathway is quite beautiful! You're in for a treat if you come here. While the evergreen plantation has a different story to tell about slavery I found the tour to be interesting and informative. Evergreen focuses on the rules of the code noir under French rule, which profess to be more humane. Evergreen doesn't have the grandeur of other plantations but provides a good story and a perspective I hadn't considered. While I agree that it could be off putting, it will have me reading up on my history. I think if our tour guide had been white I'd have been pretty skeptical. Robin was extremely personable and very knowledgeable. read more

This plantation is worth the time getting there, it gives you an insight into Louisiana's past. The tour is about one and a half hours. The tour guides show you the plantation's owners house with all the small buildings around it, for example the slave quarters and kitchen. During the winter time the sugar canes that grow in the plantation are harvested so you won't actually be able to see the plantation itself. The staff is friendly and knowledgable. The tour is quite interesting and I would recommend this place for people who have 2-3 hours or so to spend. read more
