On prior trip to the area, Helene and I have had the opportunity to visit some old plantations and still find it fascinating... It's all about the history, not always good though. The Oak Alley home was originally a sugar plantation and of course, built by and relied on enslaved men, women and children to run efficently. That's always part of the history that I find most disturbing. You start out in the main house and the tour inside the mansion runs about a half hour. There is a a lot to see and absorb inside. They take you through all the rooms and showed us the different details for making each room unique. I have no photos inside the home as we were not allowed photographs. After going through the main house you could wandeer the grounds for while and view the slave quarters. Fascinating and still very disturbing. There is a restaurarant here as well as the gift shop [of course,] where you could also getting something refreshing to drink. Since it was close to 100 degrees, anything was good and welcomed. The grounds are just beautiful and packed with history. I would urge anyone who comes down to this area to do at least one of these tours, it's an incredible journey.

There was a wooden fence all around the property and gates that were locked. I was hoping there would be someone here to let people walk around. But there wasn't. There was a gravel parking lot. She was not only very informative but also incredibly kind and personable. She had a way of explaining the history that made the tour feel engaging rather than just a typical scripted presentation. By the end, it almost felt like you were being shown around by a friend rather than just a guide. The tour itself is about 2-3 hours long and involves a fair amount of walking, so I definitely recommend wearing comfortable shoes. One tip: if you're planning to visit and don't have your own vehicle, make sure to purchase the ticket option that includes transportation. It will make things much easier. Also keep in mind that there aren't many food options nearby. Unless you're planning to walk quite a distance, it's a good idea to eat beforehand or plan your meal for after the tour. There's also a small museum on the property that's worth checking out. It's close by and provides additional background and stories that help give more context to the plantation's history. Overall, this was a very informative and meaningful tour, and I would definitely recommend it if you're visiting the area.

And at night when the white lights are in it just looks magical! I've seen people get married here and take engagement pictures here. Hint hint! Hehe This bridge is one of the historical landmarks that is quintessential Bayou St. John! Where else will you find a pedestrian bridge that opens sideways? Lately I've been seeing people put padlocks on the bridge reminiscent of what they do in Paris to signify ones eternal love. Although the sentiment is tres romantique it's actually damaging to the bridge so please don't do it! The weight of the locks will damage the already fragile bridge. So if you ever fancy a way to enjoy a blissful fall or spring evening then grab a chair or blanket and head to the bridge! You may even see me there! Enjoy!!

In addition to the colorful purple, green, and gold dancing waters of this lovely fountain and the plaques displaying the names and logos of many, many mardi Gras Krewes, both past and present, there are several benches and picnic tables surrounding the fountain so folks can gather and sit a spell and enjoy the view and the breeze off the lake. Mardi Gras Fountain my favorite place to meet up with friends after work and watch the sunset.

I'd highly recommend stopping by Jackson Square if you're looking for something unique and relatively quiet (depending on when you stop by) during your visit to New Orleans.
