Bristol Buddhist Centre is quite simply a haven for all your Buddhism needs. They specialise in…read moreBuddhist courses and retreats but also run meditation and yoga classes. Led by members of the Western Buddhist Order, the whole thing can sound a bit elite and scary. That's certainly how I felt the first time I turned up for one of the many drop-in classes, but I couldn't have been more wrong. The reception opens out onto a big comfortable training room. A beautiful Buddhist mural at one end, the whole room is warm and peaceful. The staff, always happy and friendly, run a variety of nights throughout the week from beginner classes through to the more experienced stuff. Children's classes, parent and child sessions, and a lot more than just yoga - this is a very relaxing stop.

I'm new to yoga but I've been to about 7 classes here so far and had lots of different teachers who…read morehave all been great. It's all Iyengar yoga but there's a lot of variation between classes. I have only been to beginner classes but have now been on every day they run (all except Friday and Sunday) and the teachers all have a slightly different style. Because of that you need to try it a few times on different days I think, see what pace of class suits you. The building is tucked away off Gloucester Road and is basic to look at but has a lovely atmosphere. It's very peaceful and smells of scented oil. You take your shoes off at the door and there's 2 studios and 2 changing rooms. You pay £10 for a one hour 15 min class but you can buy sessions in bulk to make it cheaper. I bought 12 classes for £84 so that's a hefty saving and after testing the water a couple of times in single sessions I knew I'd want to go all the time. You get 3 months to use the 12 classes. They provide all the equipment for free and they make sure you're happy and comfortable. There's no pressure to tie yourself in knots from day one and no judging - a 60 yr old woman regularly kicks my a*s and I'm half her age! It's first come first served so try and get there five minutes early. I haven't been turned away yet but the size of the class is quite unpredictable. I already feel stronger and today I did restorative yoga for the first time and I loved it. It's taken until now but I'm really into it and I'm historically unfit and don't go to the gym or do any exercise. I'd really recommend this place and yoga in general, I feel healthier every time I go.

It's just off gloucester road on denmark street, right at the end of the little side road. Shoes come off at the door and it's bare foot/socks around the studio. The nicest man ever greets you at reception telling you info. Cost is £10 per class which is the higher end cost wise- totes worth it! The class was busy with about 15 people attending, anne marie was amazing taking into account peoples various balances, hips and strengths. Easy to follow moves with definate pushing to achieve but without injury! Calming 5 minutes at the end left us all feeling calm but revitalised. Def will be booking more sessions, really really enjoyable :)

The nearest one to me, aside from Stokes Croft ones, was Bristol Yoga Space. They were a tad difficult to find, as I was at the opposite side of the road, and there is no big sign telling you where it is, but once you cross the road, you will see a small sign on the pavement beckoning you to go downstairs for yoga. It simply is a studio space, with a little kitchen and bathroom, and decorated very peacefully. It was pure and simple yoga, just how I like it, with lots of emphasis to get the poses right, and I felt completely at ease with my teacher. I just came out of my first class here and feel really great - challenged but rejuvenated, and I would certainly recommend it whether you are a beginner or someone looking to continue your yoga practice. I will be going again next week, and most probably taking up regular classes here. It's really difficult to find a yoga class that really suits, and I'm very lucky to have found one on my first go.

We also had school swimming lesson sessions, which were in extremely large groups and we had the lessons for long hours of the day, but they were fun and were different. They have children parties with cold and hot drinks and food. This pool was opened in 1989 and it has a refurbished fitness suit. It also has a cafe; tennis courts/badminton courts, squash courts, community suit, a bar, a crèche, junior activities, parties, changing rooms, toilets, showers, lockers, and vending machines. I always loved going here as a kid and loved to spend our jumping in the pool and swimming many lengths and splashing about in the waves. I keep having this place appear in my dreams, but I'm never in the pool I'm often walking around the place, or in a queue, or a room training/fitness, aerobics, and yoga. It is a fantastic local pool and it's great for all tourists and anybody really, children will just simply love it. I fancied going for a swim and had been warned against the Bristol South Swimming Pool so thought I'd give the Horfield option a try. I was really impressed, a nice big pool, with good changing facilities (clean showers!). After my swim I visited the gym which was just lovely, well lovely in a gym kind of way. It had plenty of cardio options and a real good selection of weight training options. The classes on offer there are fantastic, if you can't find something you like, or at least don't hate the thought of, I'd be really surprised. The other good thing about these council run gyms is that you become a member of all of them, so you can mix it up a little bit and go to other pools or centres to keep you from getting bored with exercising!

Obviously there are private cubicles, but it still feels a bit weird legging it from the pool into a cubicle past blokes in Speedos. On the other hand, at least they're kept clean and they're quite spacious. I haven't tried any of the other leisure centre facilities myself, but the gym looks well-equipped with rows of new-looking cardio and weight machines, and there are several classes offering aerobics, yoga, spinning and other types of exercise. There are also squash courts and a big sports hall for team games such as 5-a-side. If you're not going to get to the gym regularly and get your money's worth, this looks like a good budget alternative to joining a private gym.

The tennis staff are great, very helpful, great fun and during my many years as a member I was always made very welcome, the Racquet Manager in particular (DML) is a star. The club membership prices are a bit too high in my opinion; the café prices in particular are a bit expensive. That said there are some pleasant members at the club and once you get started with the tennis leagues you will always have good people to play with at all levels. Finally, it's only when you leave the club and go elsewhere that you realise the quality of the tennis courts at David Lloyd, Cardiff. There are 14 courts in all (7 indoor and 7 outdoors). Great for playing tennis all year round and I personally loved the indoor courts.
