First and foremost.. the food was fresh and delicious. We had salsa verde enchiladas and tinga tostadas. We then ordered desserts .... Tres leches and cherry pie. Had to buy an apple pie to take home.

This place is embedded in a residential neighborhood; you wouldn't go looking in this area for food. However, it is an intriguing business. There is clearly a focus on desserts, but the dinner menu is notable for vegetarian and some vegan options. My red beans and rice came with more beans than rice (which to me is a good thing), as well as quite a bit of shredded cheese on top and a tomato sauce that pushed my limits for tanginess. However, I definitely needed the fiber, as my dessert selection was what they advertise as the "better than sex" cake. No further comment on the name, but the cake was an impressive creation, with sour cream and chocolate chips in the batter, and a caramel drizzle on top. It was rich and filling. I would return for dessert before dinner, but I could do both.

This was a planned trip to Roanoke to celebrate my birthday with special friends. I called and made reservations to make sure that we would have a table. It was a pleasant experience and the reservation was taken easily. Upon arrival we were greeted immediately and seated. On this hot summer July day, the temperature inside was perfect. The table was set for 6 people and orders were taken for beverages. Service was above and beyond today and I just cannot say enough good things about the food. Everyone's order was delivered at the same time and was freshly prepared. The best thing about the meal, at least to me, was the Coconut Cake. Just WOW! I love Coconut Cake and only get it once a year on my birthday. This one will be hard to top! Thank you Evie's for providing the place for special memories to be made today!!

Sorry to say, but this may have been our last trip to Evie's. This used to be a favorite of ours, always a good meal and good staff. The last two times we've been there the food has been very disappointing, and the staff confused and less than attentive. Let's start with the previous visit. Early on a Friday evening, only two other tables with people. Waitress came right over, seated us and took our drink orders. And then a larger party came in and we were forgotten. Had to ask another staff member for a menu, and then had to ask for our order to be taken. I ordered the seared tuna salad, and the tuna was so cooked it looked like and had the texture of a pork chop. Wife was pleased. Ok, tough night, decided not to review. Tonight, early on a Friday, only a few patrons. This time we were asked for our drinks right away, received menus, and gave our order- Dragon's Tooth sandwich and Cole slaw, and a black bean burger with potato salad. 15 minutes later (not bad) we received two dragon's tooth sandwiches, one with potato salad, one with macaroni bean salad. When we pointed out the sandwich mistake, we received profuse apologies and were told the Bean burger would be right out. What appeared was a black bean mixture that had been sautéed and put between buns, not even formed into a patty. Too hot to eat until it cooled, and fell out of the bun like sloppy joes. The Dragon's tooth- a personal favorite- was just as unpleasant. Dripping with some kind of watery mayo dressing, it fell apart and had to be eaten with a fork. The eggplant medallions were strips, and were pulled out of the tasty ciabatta bread on the first bite. A real disappointment. Oh, I received the Cole slaw, and it tasted 'fizzy' as if it was old. The final straw was when we agreed to order some dessert. Evie's is known for their desserts and something good may have made up for the dinner misfire. The waitress never brought us dessert menus, did not offer us coffee or tea, and brought us the bill. Yes, there were two bigger parties. So disappointing, because we do have good experiences and memories. But sadly, the last memory may have been made. Not recommended, except for desserts.

Excellent service and the cakes were delicious. There was a line of people picking up cakes and I can see why. They were exceptional and they loved them.

My family ordered a cake for my graduation dinner yesterday. The cake was not only beautifully made, but tasted amazing! The guests at my dinner continued to make comments that this was the best cake they've ever had and I agree. It was incredible.

This neighborhood bistro and bakery is located in the heart of Roanoke's Historic Old Southwest District since 1996. After reading and hearing so much about this place located in my neighborhood, I decided to go visit it for dinner with a friend of mine who also resides in this neighborhood. As we drove searching for the restaurant and admiring the beautiful arquitecture of the houses of its time, we finally located this bright green building with an attractive owning, large windows, and a charming sign high above. One could immediately tell that the building, which was built in 1946, was renovated with lots of care and still maintained its charm. We drove by it, found a parking space, and proceeded to enter. The uniqueness of the decor gave the place the ambiance of a fun eclectic French bistro. The friendly waitress greeting us like if we we neighbors and friends and took us to our table. The menu was nicely designed with a wonderful selection of dishes and delicious desserts. We both ordered The Duke of Earl sandwich, which main ingredient was tender roast beef slices. And the bread it was made in was so soft and fresh that was key in the quality of this sandwich and of this place as a whole. I'm a firm believer that the freshness of the bread in a restaurant reveals its quality and is what makes or breaks the dining experience. For dessert I ordered I slice of the Peanut Butter Pie and my friend ordered a slice of the Better Than Sex Cake. Both were so rich and tasty. My Peanut Butter Pie was one of the best I've ever had. The waitress was so hospitable and friendly. She stopped by to see how we were doing several times and to answer our questions about this very unique restaurant. Before leaving, I walked through the Bakery part of the restaurant and observed the great variety of cakes they had for sale. Another restaurant employee answered my questions and told me that one of their best was their Key Lime Pie. What a unique and wonderful restaurant was this Bistro and Bakery! I would highly recommend it to everyone in the neighborhood, and to all those who would like to experience what a wonderful neighborhood restaurant is all about.

After having been selected as number 4 of Yelp's Top 50 most prolific Elites of 2025, a year when I also was awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Photographer of the Year Award at their Yelpies 2025 Award Ceremony, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, and where last year I was awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Yelper of the Year Award, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to return to those special ones, that have made a difference in my life and highlight them, for the benefit of the public, so they too can have an opportunity to appreciate the qualities of a one-of-a-kind fine dining experience. And Bernard's Gastropub & Eatery in Downtown Roanoke, is a perfect example. Bernard's was born out of the love of two culinary aficionados turned professionals that in someway have managed to create a restaurant with an environment that transmits this intimate love to the hearts of their customers through the attention to detail in its extraordinary customer service and amazing culinary masterpieces. Today, I felt like dining at this restaurant, which I admire for its consistency in always far exceeding my high expectations of what a fine-dining restaurant should be all about. Not knowing if they would have a table for me at this late time on a Saturday early evening, I drove in my pearl white Lexus to the nearest private parking lot and gave them a call to inquire as if they could give me a reservation for the next ten minutes. A gentleman, who later I found out was named Matthew, and would be my server, answered the phone with a very polite and welcoming voice; answering my question of what was the special dish of the day and to come on down, that my reservation was assured. As soon as I arrived to the small, very elegant foyer in front of the Host's station, he came out to greet me and instantly recognized who I was. My only request was that he give me a low table because at my age seating at a high table was a bit uncomfortable. He went back to see what he could find and ended setting me up with what I consider one of the best tables of the house, and I was so appreciative of his last minute accommodation. The menu was already setup on my table. He poured water from a special bottle into my water glass and asked if I wanted something else to drink. I asked for a Mocktail and since he also was a bartender, he prepared me one of the best mocktails I've ever had. To dine, I started out with their Mussels Carbonara appetizer, which came in a bacon parmesan cream sauce that was simply amazing, and served with toast points. As my main entrée I had the Dinner Special of the Night, the Seafood Trio. It had a delicious, giant size crab cake in the middle, scallops, and shrimps, with parmesan risotto sautéed heirloom tomato, spinach, and nice size asparagus, with a burre blanc sauce. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review to get a better sense of the high-quality of their food and magnificent ambiance of the place. Everything was so delicious that only one word could ever describe them: priceless! For dessert I had their very famous Butterscotch Banana Pudding, which the chef makes at the moment ordered. It looked spectacular and tasted amazingly delicious: a culinary work of art. What a great way for the Gran Finale of an extraordinary dining experience!

Going back to this restaurant after the great honor that I had received from Yelp, made me recall the first time that I dined here. I invite you that after reading this review, you go back and read that one, and view my photographs accompanying it, because it's one of which I am most proud of, and an experience that I will never forget and forever cherish. I arrived at the restaurant on time at five o'clock sharp and as I waited for them to open I had an opportunity to meet and chat with a couple who had been loyal customers of this restaurant for years since it first opened. They, as well as I, were aware of the beautiful location of the restaurant on one of the most exclusive neighborhoods of Roanoke. As soon as the doors opened, I allowed them to enter first and then when the host came back she gave me a warm and friendly greeting, welcoming me back, and took me to an ideal table, where I had a perfect view of the entire restaurant, from their open kitchen, to their bar, to the entire dining room and entrance, allowing me to capture in photographs the real feel of the ambiance of this cozy, yet elegant, upscale Southern, New-American restaurant known for its scratch-made dishes using locally-sourced, seasonal ingredients, including house-cured meats and pickled vegetables, as well as very creative cocktails. Shortly after I was seated, my delightful server Caroline arrived, and after a warm greeting took my order. To drink I order their Strawberry Fields Forever Mocktail. As appetizer I ordered a half dozen Oysters together with their famous Oyster Wraps. And as my main entrée, the Painted Hills Filet, cooked medium-rare. All the staff seemed so happy to see me and the manager came by to say hello and congratulate me for my outstanding Yelp accomplishment of 2025. My excellent server made sure that my order was well-paced, came by at the appropriate times to fill my glass with water and see if all was to my liking. Everything tasted amazingly delicious. Starting from the unique taste of my creative mocktail, to my flavorful appetizer, to my exquisite Filet main entrée that was so tender and cooked just right. The chefs in this fine dining restaurant are amazing and the quality of their meats is top notch. For dessert I had one of my favorite desserts, since I first had it there, their Dark Chocolate Panna Cotta. This dessert is absolutely mouthwatering. What an extraordinary dining experience I once again had there. Fine dining at its best. For those very special occasions, I highly recommend this restaurant. As I entered the door, I noticed that the bar had been extended along the wall with more seats, and was the center of attention of the restaurant. The booths that were once there had been replaced with bistro tables. But the focal point was definitely the bar which was completely full of customers talking, drinking, and having a good time. The clientele at the restaurant's tables was a diverse group of people of all ages, and of all economic backgrounds. The items on the drink and food menu were refined yet reasonably priced to accommodate everyone and leave out no one. The atmosphere of the restaurant was relaxed and unpretentious. It was a bar centered neighborhood joint, with refined yet accessible comfort food in a classy setting. She immediately answered that she can have the bartender make me one and suggested THE BEST DAY EVER FAN CLUB. I agreed and she went over to the bar. What she brought back was amazing. It looked wonderful and tasted even better. She then took my food order after answering me some questions about the menu. I ordered the YAKAMEIN which contained Braised Beef in Broth with Noodles, Shrimp & Hard-boiled Egg, and was reasonably priced at $15. The entrée was a good size and tasted amazingly delicious. For dessert I had the HOUSE ICE CREAM which was Strawberry & Lime Ice Cream with Whipped Cream & Sponch Marshmallows. Also, very interesting and sweet. In conclusion I highly recommend this place. The owners did an excellent job in making their dream come true by with their creative imagination coming up with place everyone can enjoy to the fullest.

It has been in existence since 1948, owned and operated by a lovely Greek immigrant couple, who from the moment you walk in, make you feel at home. Open daily from Monday through Friday, it is one of the few restaurants around that opens the earliest for breakfast, at 6AM, and closes at 1:30PM. Today, I decided to re-visit the place for an early breakfast, since it has plenty of free offstreet parking up to 8AM. I arrived at around 6:45AM and parked next to the sidewalk in front of the restaurant on a street parking spot. There were already some steady customers dining inside. As soon as I arrived the wife and co-owner gave me a warm welcome and I reciprocated by wishing her a Good Morning in Greek. Somehow, I find that making an effort to speak to others in their native language, establishes an immediate, friendly connection with them. I sat at one of their booths, and she asked me if I wanted coffee to start off with. I answered in the affirmative and then gave her my order. I ordered Paul's Breakfast Special. 2 eggs, with choice of bacon, ham or sausage, home fries and toast. All this, including the drink of your choice, for $8.00. I ordered my eggs over easy, bacon for the meat, and white toast. If you look at my photographs accompanying this review you will notice the quality of each of the items in my breakfast and how they were cooked to perfection, just as I requested. The bacon strips were thick and meaty, and cooked to order. The eggs were perfectly over easy. And the home fries were slices of potatoes fried just right. After delivering my breakfast to my table, she came by to refill my coffee. While I was enjoying my breakfast, other groups of customers came in and also received a friendly, warm welcome. A father and daughter came in, and soon after, the lady co-owner brought a slice of freshly baked cake with a lit candle on top and sang to the girl the Happy Birthday song. Relaxed ambiance, quality food, and excellent service, make for an extraordinary dining experience. Sometimes one finds the most amazing restaurants, tucked away on a side street.

There are times when one encounters very special restaurants that can only be described as…read more"priceless." And every time one returns to dine there, it only serves to reinforce the perfect attachment that one has acquired from the very first time they dined there and had the pleasure of enjoying an extraordinary fine dining experience. And Alexander's, in the heart of Downtown Roanoke, is a perfect example. From the moment I arrived and walked through their door, I was greeted in such a way, by none other than Bjorn, the Dining Room Manager himself, that made me feel appreciated and immediately made me feel at home. Neither the coldness of the weather nor the accumulated snow could hinder me from my decision to dine here this evening. I was the first one to arrive after they opened their doors. Since the streets were still icy and filled with snow, I left my Lexus at home and took a Lyft to the restaurant, which was not far from my neighborhood, the Historic Old Southwest. Since it was a slow night due to the weather, the Dining Room Manager himself doubled as my server for the evening. To drink, we discussed my flavor liking for a Mocktail, and he came up with a special one, that ended up tasting amazing. To dine, I started with the Deconstructed cajunese california roll appetizer. It was amazingly delicious! Then I had a Salad vinaigrette, which was included with every entrée, and a French Baguette with a cube of butter. The baguette slices with butter were so fresh, soft in the inside and crispy on the outside, that they confirmed my view that the quality of a restaurant's bread and butter is a reflection of the quality of the restaurant and its cuisine. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review to get a better sense of the place and the quality of their food. As my main entrée, I had the Grilled filet of beef, sauce marchand de vin, cooked medium-rare. The filet was cooked to perfection, just as ordered, so tender, juicy, and flavorful. It was a culinary masterpiece from Chef and General Manager, Boni M. Webb, who graciously came out to greet me, and gave me an opportunity to personally celebrate her magnificent cuisine. She reminded me of my Japanese student who obtained the best grade in my Business class at the university where I taught. She was very humble and kind. As the Grand Finale dessert, on the advice of my server and general manager, I ordered their Glace au chocolat. It was wonderful. What an outstanding dining experience I once again had in this outstanding restaurant with a unique combination of exceptional food, atmosphere, and heartfelt service. I highly recommend it, and can't wait to return.

I had inquired with the restaurant a month or so in advance of my visit (I was concerned about the dress code) and they were spot on. I wore jeans and a buton down and was quite comfortable (and not out of place). It's a very nice restaurant, but it's certainly not "stuffy." Service was excellent. Food was phenomenal. Dinner started with some nice bread (and really good butter), and a salad came with my lamb ragu. It was all really good. The lamb was super rich and very flavorful. My only suggestion would be to serve the ragu over the polenta, and to add more vegetables. As it was, the dinner was "just enough;" I wasn't stuffed but I wasn's hungry, either. Really good dinner!
