The slice was very small and dry and completely overpriced at $9 (I live in DC and would have thought it was overpriced at home!) The frosting was the best part...and I don't even like frosting! Stopped in for an early dinner this evening. Quite a large and appealing menu, including a couple of vegan dishes. Prices were reasonable and our waitress was very friendly and helpful! Huge selection of amazing cakes, pastries, and desserts. Unfortunately, none of those were vegan. They also have a nice selection of wines and cocktails. Our table ordered the red beans and rice bowl, chicken enchiladas,, lemon layer cake and Boston cream cake. All of it was very tasty! We will definitely be back when in the area. read more

This place is embedded in a residential neighborhood; you wouldn't go looking in this area for food. However, it is an intriguing business. There is clearly a focus on desserts, but the dinner menu is notable for vegetarian and some vegan options. My red beans and rice came with more beans than rice (which to me is a good thing), as well as quite a bit of shredded cheese on top and a tomato sauce that pushed my limits for tanginess. However, I definitely needed the fiber, as my dessert selection was what they advertise as the "better than sex" cake. No further comment on the name, but the cake was an impressive creation, with sour cream and chocolate chips in the batter, and a caramel drizzle on top. It was rich and filling. I used to eat here often and the cakes are the best. My friends and I heard about the change in ownership and so we tried it for dinner. Sat ourselves as instructed. Made eye contact with all three employees. Waited for over 10 mins. One employee was busy flirting at the checkout. Another made eye contact with us from 15' away but instead of greeting us and bringing over a menu, she handed menus to her colleague and went back to scrolling. Third person walked by us twice without acknowledging us or giving us menus. I've never done this before but at that point we stood and walked out. I think the old owner would be shocked at how poorly this team is running her old business. If this is how they handle a quiet Tuesday night, I don't know how they will survive. read more

We just enjoyed a bowl of seafood clam chowder, and breakfast tacos. I felt compelled to remark on yelp because the food was so outstanding. At first I thought the soup was a little pricey at nine dollars a bowl. I will say it was worth every penny. So tasty and creamy. My husband shared a bite of breakfast tacos, which were equally delicious with the accompanying sauce and a tiny dab of hot sauce. The servers are outstandingly friendly. The dining room is casual, full of artwork, antiques, and other friendly faces We visit every time we're in Roanoke, Virginia. Our son lives right up the street from the southwest historic District. This was a planned trip to Roanoke to celebrate my birthday with special friends. I called and made reservations to make sure that we would have a table. It was a pleasant experience and the reservation was taken easily. Upon arrival we were greeted immediately and seated. On this hot summer July day, the temperature inside was perfect. The table was set for 6 people and orders were taken for beverages. Service was above and beyond today and I just cannot say enough good things about the food. Everyone's order was delivered at the same time and was freshly prepared. The best thing about the meal, at least to me, was the Coconut Cake. Just WOW! Sorry to say, but this may have been our last trip to Evie's. This used to be a favorite of ours, always a good meal and good staff. The last two times we've been there the food has been very disappointing, and the staff confused and less than attentive. Let's start with the previous visit. Early on a Friday evening, only two other tables with people. Waitress came right over, seated us and took our drink orders. And then a larger party came in and we were forgotten. Had to ask another staff member for a menu, and then had to ask for our order to be taken. I ordered the seared tuna salad, and the tuna was so cooked it looked like and had the texture of a pork chop. Wife was pleased. Ok, tough night, decided not to review. Tonight, early on a Friday, only a few patrons. This time we were asked for our drinks right away, received menus, and gave our order- Dragon's Tooth sandwich and Cole slaw, and a black bean burger with potato salad. 15 minutes later (not bad) we received two dragon's tooth sandwiches, one with potato salad, one with macaroni bean salad. When we pointed out the sandwich mistake, we received profuse apologies and were told the Bean burger would be right out. What appeared was a black bean mixture that had been sautéed and put between buns, not even formed into a patty. Too hot to eat until it cooled, and fell out of the bun like sloppy joes. The Dragon's tooth- a personal favorite- was just as unpleasant. Dripping with some kind of watery mayo dressing, it fell apart and had to be eaten with a fork. The eggplant medallions were strips, and were pulled out of the tasty ciabatta bread on the first bite. A real disappointment. Oh, I received the Cole slaw, and it tasted 'fizzy' as if it was old. The final straw was when we agreed to order some dessert. Evie's is known for their desserts and something good may have made up for the dinner misfire. The waitress never brought us dessert menus, did not offer us coffee or tea, and brought us the bill. Yes, there were two bigger parties. So disappointing, because we do have good experiences and memories. But sadly, the last memory may have been made. Not recommended, except for desserts. read more

This neighborhood bistro and bakery is located in the heart of Roanoke's Historic Old Southwest District since 1996. After reading and hearing so much about this place located in my neighborhood, I decided to go visit it for dinner with a friend of mine who also resides in this neighborhood. As we drove searching for the restaurant and admiring the beautiful arquitecture of the houses of its time, we finally located this bright green building with an attractive owning, large windows, and a charming sign high above. One could immediately tell that the building, which was built in 1946, was renovated with lots of care and still maintained its charm. We drove by it, found a parking space, and proceeded to enter. The uniqueness of the decor gave the place the ambiance of a fun eclectic French bistro. The friendly waitress greeting us like if we we neighbors and friends and took us to our table. The menu was nicely designed with a wonderful selection of dishes and delicious desserts. We both ordered The Duke of Earl sandwich, which main ingredient was tender roast beef slices. And the bread it was made in was so soft and fresh that was key in the quality of this sandwich and of this place as a whole. I'm a firm believer that the freshness of the bread in a restaurant reveals its quality and is what makes or breaks the dining experience. For dessert I ordered I slice of the Peanut Butter Pie and my friend ordered a slice of the Better Than Sex Cake. Both were so rich and tasty. My Peanut Butter Pie was one of the best I've ever had. The waitress was so hospitable and friendly. She stopped by to see how we were doing several times and to answer our questions about this very unique restaurant. Before leaving, I walked through the Bakery part of the restaurant and observed the great variety of cakes they had for sale. Another restaurant employee answered my questions and told me that one of their best was their Key Lime Pie. What a unique and wonderful restaurant was this Bistro and Bakery! I would highly recommend it to everyone in the neighborhood, and to all those who would like to experience what a wonderful neighborhood restaurant is all about. read more

We absolutely adore this place! My husband and I are from Charlotte, NC but end up in Roanoke a few times a year. We stumbled upon this place in July looking for a quick breakfast while staying right around the corner. Our server was beyond kind and very helpful. The service and food were wonderful and I wish they had a location closer to us. We came back later that day to snag some cake to eat after a long day and that didn't disappoint either! After that great experience we knew exactly where we wanted to get dessert when we came back in town last weekend. We ordered four slices of cake on this trip and I tried the Better than Sex, Death by Chocolate, and Marie Antoinette. I'm my book, the Better than Sex cake was my favorite by far. It was so moist and light but with some very rich and delicious flavors. The Death by Chocolate was wonderful but was a bit dense. Super yummy but would definitely pair it with some coffee or milk. The Marie Antoinette was also very good but I am leaning towards their chocolate cakes. I had the sunshine cake back in the summer and thought the same thing when comparing it to my husband's slice of chocolate cake. I usually am not a big chocolate cake person but there Better than Sex is one of the top desserts in my book. read more

Although Evie's food has always been good in the past, an October visit to Evie's by my family revealed that Evie's seems to have lost focus on their primary mission of providing good food and service. Instead they are now very prominently promoting an anti-ICE opinion via signage. I do not care and do not want to know what Evie's owner's and management's political opinions are. I do not go to restaurants to see political propaganda. Going out to eat with family or friends should be about enjoying good food and time together. It should never subject the patrons to political opinions. Keep that to yourselves and not on display. I have patronized Evie's many times in the past and have recommended them to others numerous times, as I am sure many others have also, likely resulting in additional business for them and subsequently additional recommendations that has furthered Evie's success. However I will no longer go there or recommend them. Evie's has every right to make foolish business decisions such as promoting a certain political opinion however by doing so they are discouraging large numbers of their customers who simply want good food and service without side orders of "us vs. them" mentality and political propaganda. read more

The last order of M&C was terrible. cheese like powdered. Noddles was rare. No baked cheese on top. Poor. It tasted terrible. No good. And it was $10.00 Not ordering again. So, my wife was turning 40 and I needed a surprise cake and not just any cake as she was also going to be competing in her first bodybuilding competition on her actual birthday. The competition was set for Roanoke, Virginia, and that's where I began my search. As you can imagine, there were a lot of choices and I truly mean a lot of them, but there was something about Evie's Bistro and Bakery that stood out. It could have been Evie's professionalism when we spoke or maybe the delicious looking spread on the website, either way I was entrusting her with something super important without a taste test, but she made me feel like our cake was in great hands. My top request was for a cake that matched her competition bikini and that showed off the well-toned abs that my wife had been working on for almost a year. All I can tell you is that she delivered! I did not see the cake myself until at the birthday party along with everyone else and it was even more beautiful than I had imagined. My wife was in tears and everyone else was in awe, we all gushed for about twenty minutes standing around the cake taking pictures and just admiring it! The details were immaculate, it was an exact replica of my wife's suit and the symmetry of the body of the cake was just right! The cake looked too good to eat.....almost! We ate that cake! We very much enjoyed that cake! Have you ever had a cake that brought tears to your eyes and mouth! The cake tasted just as good as it looked. So again, while eating we spent probably another 20 minutes talking about how good the cake was and of course who made it. Also, just to tell you my wife on her 40th birthday won 1stplace in all four of her categories in front of over 20 family and friends, got some awesome gifts, and topped off with the most beautiful and most delicious cake. Keep in mind she had not had sweets in about 9 months so if we all fawning over how great it tasted, I know she was in heaven! This place is so cute! It looks small from the outside but when you go in it's huge! The ambience is so welcoming. Very cute decor. There are glass cases on the left to peruse all of their amazing desserts. In the back there is a bar that serves cocktails and wine! Tuesday's you can have a piece of cake or pie and a glass of house wine for $11. Not a bad way to end the day. They also have tarot card readings on Tuesday nights between 5-7. So far I haven't had anything bad here and I've been twice. It's definitely my new Tuesday night hang out! They serve regular food as well. There are quite a few menus. We are in town for Thanksgiving week and met up with some old friends for dinner at Evie's. First of all, the staff were friendly and attentive and just plain kind! They are super dog friendly as well so major bonus points there. Food was wholesome and delicious. You can tell that everything is made from "scratch." It was very chilly out so I had pumpkin soup and red beans and rice. I was expecting a cup of soup, but it was a gigantic bowl and the rice and beans was a very generous portion as well so I have leftovers- score!. Both were great. Keith ordered the Mushroom Bisque which was the bomb! We bought a slice of coconut cake and "Better than Sex" cake as take out to have on Thanksgiving- can't wait! In town to celebrate eldest daughter's bday. Searched Yelp to support "local" and found Evie's, a 30 minute drive from where we were staying; phoned in a same-day Sat reservation, table for 7 ready when we arrived. On street parking, outdoor and indoor seating w/ ample Covid spacing, gender specific restrooms. Donna provided good service; asked what her 2 fave things on menu were, she lauded over the meat loaf sandwich and VA Po boy. More on that later...While waiting, I perused the dessert cases full of yummy cakes. Spoke to a gentleman behind the counter, Evie's partner, who told me they'd been there for 26 years, previously operating under the name "Wild Flour Cafe," also owned spot at Towers before selling it and changing their name. He raved over the town, which is cool to hear as a visitor; when he learned our visit was in honor of my daughter's birthday, he promised to alert Donna to bring a slice of "Better than sex" cake at the end of the meal. Saddened and disappoint that it never happened, mostly because I'd bet their homemade desserts are what they're better known for over their sandwiches. Speaking of...Sandwiches overall were 3-3.5/5, good but not worth driving that distance again to repeat. Size was average for the price. House bread was highly touted by many in the group. VA po' boy was ok, heavy on the pimento cheese, light on the ham. Side of pumpkin soup ($3 up charge) had hints of warm creamy cinnamon spice; pretty good, if you like all things pumpkin (wife and daughter not fans). Wife said meatloaf sandwich was good but would have expected to taste more of the meat instead of the fixin's. Boys preferred club sandwich over the Italian, again, related to the bread. Kids were disappointed in the small portion of "tortilla chips" side, probably half a serving size. Youngest daughter ordered the Tuna melt but didn't finish it due to the strong fishy aftertaste; ended up eating some of wife's meatloaf. Oldest daughter enjoyed her chicken pesto sandwich but wasn't a fan of the pasta salad. If you're in the area, definitely enjoy an Evie's dessert on their outdoor patio on a nice day...and write about it to tell us what we missed! read more

This place smells amazing! Lots of tasty baked treats to tantalize the taste buds and the first few seconds in, I was already thinking "this is gonna be good!" I ordered the Parthenon Platter which was fresh and flavorful. Plenty of fixin's to share with a bud and a great meal by itself, reasonably priced. I wrapped things up with by splitting a slice of the Marie Antoinette cake. The icing was perfect; not too sweet, not too "buttery." Every part of the meal seemed very balanced. It was nice to see a restaurant in Roanoke's Historic district so we could all walk to dinner. My party started off with a round of adult beverages, a glass of Vinho Verde for me and cocktails for everyone else. For food the Surimi Sandwich for me and the Gumbo for boyfriend, the Gumbo was a popular choice at our table. The food was okay, I was not very impressed. We ordered cake slices for the road, these are baked in house and are available to purchase by the slice or by the whole cake. The Lemon Chiffon and Better than Sex cake slices had good flavor but were kept refrigerated for too long. Definitely would return but would order a different menu item. When staying in Roanoke, my boyfriend and I decided to check this place out. It was walking distance from our Airbnb, which was nice. We went on a Saturday night, so we were expecting a hip and young atmosphere, but got the opposite. It was more of an older local crowd. We decided to try it out anyway. We were quickly greeted by our server. After looking over the menu, we decided to both order the Doctors Macaroni and Cheese. It came with a salad and we both got the Italian dressing. All of their dressings are homemade which I thought was a nice touch! The salad was overall mediocre. The dressing was watery and there weren't many veggies. After a little while, our macaroni dishes came out. It looked amazing, and tasted good at first but I quickly became tired of the taste. It was a very strong onion taste, which I continued to taste for hours after I left the restaurant. I did not eat the whole dish (probably about half) and felt sick that night and the morning after. If I came back to try this place again, I would definitely try out some of the other menu options. They do have a vegetarian section, which I like to see. Their cakes looked tasty also; they sell them by the slice! Overall, this place really wasn't what I was looking for on a Saturday night but it serves its purpose. read more

I really hate to leave this kind of review on a local business that I've tried so hard to support. Unfortunately the customer service and attention to detail leaves me no choice. As a business, we've been very explicit that we did NOT want them to place stickers on something we ordered since they were placed so poorly last time, but were willing to place them ourselves. That didn't happen, and they were still poorly placed. As a personal customer, I've ordered one cake, specifically ordered without pecans and got it with pecans anyways, making it a lot less enjoyable for us; thankfully not an allergy. Most recently, I received a call at 9:30 AT NIGHT asking me when I was coming to pick up my cake. I told them 1:30 tomorrow, as I called and ordered it. At 9:30 AT NIGHT Evie then let me know she wasn't going to be open on Sunday, the day I ordered it to be picked up. At 9:30 AT NIGHT I had to leave my husband, who the cake was for, supposed to be a SURPRISE and go to Evie's and find a friend at 10 PM at night who had fridge space to let me store it until the next day. Evie's response was 'sorry for the miscommunication.' There wasn't a miscommunication. I CALLED, since their website doesn't work fully, and ordered the cake for SUNDAY afternoon pick up and lined up someone to pick it up then. Not being open Sunday should have been clearly communicated at the time of order, not 9:30 AT NIGHT, especially when they close at 8. Why not call earlier? Why not pay attention to the customer on the phone when they ordered? So frustrated. read more
