It's a little confusing to find this place since there's construction everywhere. Just follow the signs downstairs and go to this cozy little office. Everyone here is friendly. The signs say masks are required, but I forgot to bring a mask. They have masks to give so it's all good. I had an appointment at 12, but I showed up 15 mins early. The doctors and assistants here are very fast, and my whole checkup definitely took less than an hour. I wish my insurance covered frames and contacts, but I'll have to do more research on my end. Had a wonderful experience from beginning to end with dr mamie chen. Was able to schedule an appointment on their website, fill in all my info beforehand and and sign everything. Really appreciated getting all that done ahead of time so by the time I went to my appointment I just had to sign1 form and was immediately seen. Dr chen was thorough with her exam and really knowledgeable about not just making sure I could see but that my overall optical health was in order as I have some family history issues. The only caveat I would mention is that it's a small office and it didn't seem like they had a lot of glasses/contacts around in stock so if you're used to bigger offices with more high end sales involved then maybe it's not the best experience? Also compared to my previous optometrist in SF, their tech tools were not as sophisticated. For example at my previous optometrist they were able to image my optical nerve and then show me on the computer screen. But again, they're probably opting for compact tech that can fit in their smaller space so no knock on them for that just something to consider if you're looking for that kind of high end care. read more

Fantastic place! Have been coming here since 2015. Recently moved 35 mins away but didn't mind the trip here because they are great from start to finish! The online appointment booking and forms are very convenient and efficient. They keep to their appointment times and honestly don't think I've had to wait more than 15 mins, if that. Staff is very friendly and clearly explains your benefits. I appreciated them telling me both over the phone before my appointment as well as when I got there so there are no surprises. They also took extra precautions because of COVID-19. And they were super patient as my daughter probably tried on about 20 pairs of glasses that they would have to sanitize before putting them back on the shelf. Dr. Chen is pleasant, professional, and very knowledgeable! My eyes haven't changed much but I took my daughter here for the first time and I was grateful for her thorough explanation of her options. As a teen, my daughter wanted contacts but Dr. Chen explained that since she would be wearing glasses anyway on an as-needed basis that contacts for her eye type might be uncomfortable. She did not push for her to do the contact lens fitting and first-time wearer lesson (which both cost extra $). This was probably the BEST advice since about 5 mins later my daughter started having anxiety at the thought of anyone touching her eyeball and Dr. Chen sweetly calmed her down and shared anecdotes to make her feel at ease! Went to the doctor's office's last Saturday for my second annual eye exam. Dr. Chen took great care of me. She explained that my vision finally has stabilized to where my prescription didn't change too significantly...which makes me happy. We went over my dry eye and dry contacts and she suggested going back to my Biofinity contact lenses (never had an issue with those contacts). Did the standard testing and even went as far as suggesting implanting an Intra-ocular lens in the future (which would have to wait since insurance does NOT cover this) since I'm never going to be a candidate for LASIK. Now, I'm waiting for my trial lenses and will be waiting for my tax return to purchase a year's supply of contacts and a new pair of glasses. Thanks, Dr. Chen for your help. Dr. Chen is very thorough and provided me with the highest level of care. Her assistant, Nina, was also very helpful -- I had trouble picking out frames (because I'm very hesitant and picky) and she suggested a few that worked well for my prescription, were comfortable, and would frame my face well. She insisted that I choose a Kate Spade pair with a bit of a sharp angle at the top. That wasn't my first choice, but she explained that since my face is a bit rounder, that pair would complement it well. I decided that another pair of eyes may be more credible so I took her on her suggestion. Months later, when I was having contact lens issues and wore said pair to work, I was getting compliments left and right! Great for eye care appointments, but buying glasses here is a ripoff. They charge $150 dollars extra for an anti-glare coating when as far as I can see, all major online retailers include that in the price of their lenses. When I picked up my very expensive glasses, the office staff seemed annoyed when I asked for a minor adjustment to the nose pads for fit. I feel like if you're paying over $400 for glasses it's not too much to expect service at least on par with what you'd get at LensCrafters. read more

Dr. Mamie Chen is terrific, and so is the receptionist (alas, I've forgotten her name). They are prompt and friendly, and Dr. Chen is very thorough and happy to answer questions (no matter how many you have) without rushing you. She doesn't try to push products - she just tells you the benefits and downsides of the different options and really lets you decide without pressure. I was very happy to find this office a year ago for updating my rigid gas permeable contact lenses (an area of expertise that isn't so common as it once was), and was back last week for another exam and to update my eyeglasses. I've visited this place for my annual twice now. They are absolutely outstanding! Prompt attention when I had an issue refilling a prescription, or needed extra documentation for insurance. Everyone was very nice in the office and Dr.Chen is very capable. Here's my problem I've been wearing contacts for over 20 years both hard and soft so I don''t need any training or instruction. I had previously been wearing hard lenses and I really wanted the comfort of soft lenses. I came in with both my hard and soft lenses that I've worn with the prescriptions so that was half the battle you had the script she even contacted my previous doctor in NY to get more info (Who I should have just gone back to but I had Covid-19 Subway fear). I said the vision with the hard lenses was amazing they were just too uncomfortable. She recommended another lens Bioinfinity Multifocal which are actually pretty good here's the problem they are custom and take forever to come which is not her fault. So when I wanted to make an adjusted it took like a month to get the trials each time. Ok after weeks of back and forth I finally got a pair of lenses that were pretty good I could finally see my phone but the distance was a bit off and she said if I adjust the distance you won't be able to see your phone so I left it as it was. I ordered a six month supply and I've been wearing them. Here's the problem I really am having a problem with the distance when I drive when I initially got the lenses I was pretty much homebound due to Covid-19 now that I'm out working etc. I'm having issues. I called yesterday to see if I could come in and if she could try and tweak the prescription and I was told because it's been over six months I would have to pay for a full examination $225.00. Here's my problem I expected to pay something but a full examination when you A. Had my original prescription B. Recommended a lens that you knew took forever and then use time as and excuse not to even try and accommodate me. C.Didn't even offer to charge at least half since you were going let's be frank less than half the work you did before. I know Covid-19 has been hard on everyone but this is not the way to get back on track. read more

I have been searching for a convenient eye doctor office for quite some time, and if I just came here from the start, I would have saved a lot of wasted time and energy. This place is awesome. Even before I went, they had an extremely easy to use web portal used to fill out forms and schedule appointments so when I got there, the only thing left to do was sign. When I got in, I waited maybe 3 minutes to get started with the pretests. Front desk people were quick to the point and easy to deal with. When it was time to see the doctor, Dr. Chen was very pleasant and the exam went by quickly and she answered all my questions. I was in and out in about 20 minutes. Dr. Chen is very nice and seems knowledgable. They office staff, however, are instructed to annoy every client with many phone calls, even if you made your appointment online to avoid these. I was called to remind me of my last appointment, more than a year ago, and I explained that this was unnecessary and unhelpful. They promised never to call again. Then they called more recently to cancel an appointment, because Dr. Chen couldn't be bothered to stay for her published hours. Again, I explained that a call was unhelpful--and an e-mail message would be better. Then, after I rescheduled, they called again today. I have been wearing glasses/contacts for more than 20 years, so I've seen my fair share of eye doctors. This has to be one of my best experiences yet. As with most people, I dread going to most doctors. Sadly, in order to get new contacts, I have to go every year. After looking through Yelp reviews, and seeing that this place accepts VSO eye insurance, I decided to give it a shot. Upon arriving, I checked in at the front desk. Since I had conveniently filled out all the paperwork online before my appointment, I just had to quickly sign off on it. The woman at the front desk explained all of my insurance benefits, which was awesome! Nobody ever does that, and insurance is always so confusing, so it was great to have her lay out exactly what would be covered. I also usually go as cheap as possible for eye exams but with insurance, the appointment didn't cost me a dime. I had arrived about 10 minutes early, and there were other people in the office, so I thought I would have to wait forever (like always). But to my surprise, Dr. Chen took me right away! She was quick, efficient, and thorough, which I appreciate, but didn't make me feel like she was rushing me out or pressed for time. While I normally always advocate for buying glasses or contacts online, for obvious price benefits, with the benefits from my insurance, it was actually cheaper to order my contacts through the office. So I did! Once again, the woman at the front desk quickly told me the price with my insurance discount, and didn't make me feel pressure to order through them (which I absolutely HATE).
