I recently had a very bad experience with Newport Vision. I went in for an emergency visit on 3/23 because my eyes were very irritated due to over use of my contact lenses. They were able to give me an appointment right away, which was great. I came in and the staff at the front desk was very rude. Especially the the one who sits to the right. I believe she takes care of the insurance claims. Not pleasant at all. She needs a new job where she is NOT dealing with customers. I have insurance and my copay was $50. I came back on 3/25 unofficially (no appt was scheduled) because Dr. DeRienzo just said to "stop in" so he can just look at my eyes to make sure the meds were working. I didn't even go back into a room. I'm thinking it was just a followup to my original appt. They charged my insurance again for this visit and said I had to pay another co-pay. Which didn't make sense because the bill i received was for $30 and my co-pay is $50. I believe the just like to double charge customers. When I question it again the woman to the right gave me such an attitude!! She couldn't even have the patience to explain anything to me. She just said I have to pay it. They do not like to provide you with your prescription either. It's like pulling teeth. They charged $30 to have my PD measured as well. I needed new glasses so I figured since I was there it would make it easier. I picked out a pair of Chanel frames which were almost $400. With lenses and all came out to $500 after insurance. They couldn't find the case for the glasses so the gave me a non-name brand case and said they would look for it and have give me a call the next morning. No call for 2 days. I finally called the optician and that's when he told me they could not find it and they had to order a new one. He said he would keep me posted. 2 weeks later I finally received a call that they got the case in. For $500 you bet I want my Chanel case! The Drs are very pleasant and know what they are doing. They definitely need new staff. I will not be coming here again. I will take my business elsewhere. read more

Last month, I visited Newport Vision for a routine eye exam and new glasses. I made the appointment online, and they called to confirm and figure out insurance details before my visit. It seemed like they overbooked as there was only one doctor available and a lot of patients in the waiting room. I had to wait around 40 minutes. The actual eye exam was fine. I got a little annoyed when the office staff kept hovering as I was browsing glasses. It felt like she was rushing me. I was told that they would call me in about a week when my glasses were ready. I waited a week and a half before calling. The office staff told me my glasses had just arrived and needed to go through inspection. I waited a few more days before calling again. This time, they told me my glasses had NOT arrived yet and should show up soon. Wait, what? My husband had to stop by for an appointment about a week later, so he picked my glasses up for me then. So, when they say 1 week for glasses... they really mean 3 weeks. My husband visited several times when he had an abrasion on his cornea. He arrived on time for his appointments, but always had to wait between 30 - 60 minutes before seeing the doctor. Nowhere near as bad as some of the older reviews below. If you live in Newport, it's worth giving them a try. It's nice that they're open until 8:00pm on some weekdays. read more

I used my optical plan recently and went to Newport Optical. They recently moved from Newport Mall to the waterfront area of Newport. I found the store to be really nice and colorful and they had a good variety of frames and options available within my plan. I didn't have to pay much out of pocket for the non-covered options. My optometrist was Dr. Bruce Meyer. He was thorough and spent quite a bit of time helping me pick out frames that would go with my face. I was a little dissatisfied with the customer service at the front desk when I first went there. While I was told that I was being helped, the same woman went ahead and started helping someone else. Her co-worker gave her a long stare from the front desk before she realized her faux pas and she rushed back to help me. The other minor issue was that they need to speak a little more softly there. Not everyone wants to hear about what's going on with every single customer. When I picked up my glasses, they were well done and fit well. There was a friendly attendant who made sure that the glasses fit properly. I think there are a few issues that this place can improve on, but it definitely has a lot of potential and I will definitely be back when that time comes to get another pair of glasses. read more

Please stay away from this terrible practice; even if you have to go into the city or farther into Jersey to see an eye doctor, it will be worth it in your wallet and your frame of mind. The pricing policies are extremely opaque, and costs are much higher than other places. When I went in for an examination, I was not told that there was a separate contact lens fitting fee until after my visit was finished. And then when I went back for a second time six months later, I was not told until after an appointment that they actually raised a price of another fee until-- guess when-- after it was time to pay. I even checked the fee schedule before going in, but somehow the lady at the desk "forgot" about the new fees before I talked with the doctor, but was reminded afterwards by checking her paperwork. The staff here are also extremely rude and pushy. They constantly talked to my wife & I with a major attitude, and acted like they had much more important things to do than do measurements, help us pick glasses, or explain the fee schedule. While inquiring about certain fees with one of them (a Ms. "Gabby"), my wife almost wanted to cry out of desperation. The doctors are a bit nicer, but also pushy in peddling products. There are much friendlier practices out there with better prices. Look for them; don't stop at this place. read more

I've ordered my contacts from them ever since due to the competitive pricing and convenience. I recently came here for an eye exam because my contact lens prescription expired. I live and work in Newport and my old eye doctor is on the upper east side, so I decided to come here for convenience. I went to their website and requested an appt. during the week. They were able to get me in the next Saturday. My boyfriend went with me and they were actually able to get him seen by the eye doctor as well as a walk-in appt, so that was great. The waiting, however, was not. I already have a great pair of glasses, so my sole purpose was renewing my contact lens prescription. I went in thinking I'd be out by 2:30. I didn't even get seen until 2:30. Then, they told me I would have to pay for a contact lens fitting. Which was okay I guess since it was only $60.. but I wanted and ended up getting a prescription for the same exact contacts I've been in the last two years. So I definitely don't think the "fitting" was worth that. After an initial test, I had to wait about 15 more minutes to be seen by the doctor. Also annoying. Once I finally got in to see Dr. DeRienzo, everything was great. He was very pleasant and friendly and he saw both my boyfriend and myself one after the other in the same room. He knew his stuff and lucky for him the contacts I've been in are the ones with tons of promotional material all over the office, so he didn't even need to try to push another brand :) I also find out my insurance would cover $150 for contacts from Dr. DeRienzo, so I was happy they were able to check that for me. My insurance switched recently, and I always had to pay the full cost of contacts - $93 for a pack of 90! So I was pleasantly surprised and that made me feel better about paying extra for a contact fitting. A lot of these reviews are talking about how rude the staff is.. I'm not sure if they have the same two women working everyday, but the women working on Saturday seemed pretty pleasant in my opinion after striking up conversation. If I didn't have conversations with them (and by conversations, I don't mean nagging about when glasses might be ready or why contacts couldn't be ordered, etc.), I might have got the vibe other people are talking about, but coming from someone with RBFS, all it takes is to engage in conversation and then WOW you realize people are actually people! People are nicer if you're nice. People are more likely to help you if you're nice to them first. I'll be back again next year for my annual eye exam! read more

But the doctor was in such a hurry to move on to the next patient and literally rushed me out the door refusing to answer my questions. I went to see Dr DeRienzo for my routine eye exam (i am a diabetic so i go 1-2 times a year). I had the makings of a serious issue that was going to need further attention. After doing his exam, he suggested i follow up with a specialist (which i did, and am doing well as a result of the early catch!). He went over 3 specialists that he knew off (both local and further away if i so desired) and then HE SPENT OVER 30 MINUTES OF HIS TIME JUST TALKING TO ME! I was the last appointment of the day (since i work late) and this was clearly cutting into his personal/family time, but he stayed until i was done asking questions. we talked about the risks, treatment options that may come up, and also what this implied about my overall health. All in all, i was very happy with my experience with Newport Vision Center and the doctors there. read more

The eye dr was perfectly friendly and professional. The staff however was completely rude, low class and petty. The worst one was a woman who had such an attitude about doing her job that it felt as if she was the disgruntled customer and we were the office staff trying to please her. They also openly complained about other employees (who were there, and I'm sure could hear!) and asked personal questions that had nothing to do with eye glasses. If the dr's know that the staff operates like this, shame on them. If they don't know, they should consider replacing them before they lose all their customers. I know I won't be returning, ever. After I chose my frames, they told me to come Monday for them. I went Monday afternoon and they weren't ready. They called 2 hours later to say they were ready. I couldn't go until the next day and again I was told they weren't ready but that they "got them together quick" for me since I was there. I spent three hours here--waited 30 minutes for my exam, then had to have him reexamine me, then waited another 45 minutes to get my reading glasses Rx, which I never did get because he was too absent-minded to write it down & his assistant was too inept to ask him for it. Ended up spending over $600 and when I came back to pick up my glasses & contacts, they'd forgotten to order my contacts, he'd forgotten who I was & asked where I got my frames from & was rude and condescending when I asked him to write down my reading glass prescription. They also asked for my medical insurance because my eye insurance wasn't enough? Lastly, they will tell you something will be ready on a certain day - and won't deliver. (Eg, my glasses were supposed to be ready by Thursday and was given attitude on Saturday when asked why they were not ready.) Find another place to get your eye exam, glasses and lenses. I understand services cost money and medical and visual services are no exception. When I get a good service, I am happy to pay. When I don't, I feel cheated and ripped off. The latter is how I felt with this place. From questionable practices like saying "this special procedure costs extra $15 per eye, do you agree to do it?" on their paperwork rather than saying "it costs $30" (and they even admitted that everyone falls for the $15 per eye, seeing the $15 number, agrees and then realizes it was $30 after the fact when they are charged, because who is going to get one eye checked?) to badmouthing cheaper Chinatown places to get glasses (supposedly their frames break easily - I don't understand how the same brand and same lenses that are likely assembled by the same few labs in the area could be different). It is not good business practice to call your competition "crap" (exact word the optometrist used), especially after complementing the glasses that I got at this supposedly "crap" place. I paid for my eye exam and fitting the contact lenses - note, it was the same prescription and lenses I have worn for years, but the optometrist refused to write a prescription without the "fitting", i.e. extra charge, all my past optometrists just wrote a prescription since nothing changed since last time and trusted that their colleagues did a good job before them. As standard practice, they gave me a sample pair to try and charged me ahead of time for the 6 months supply (provided if the sample didn't work, I could come back but since these were the same lenses I have worn for years, we knew I wouldn't). I was busy for 3 weeks and kept forgetting to call to OK the order. Did they call me to check? Did they follow up to see if everything was OK and whether it was OK to order? No such service. Bottom line, bad business practices, disrespectful to other colleagues and other optical stores, no follow ups. Unless you have an insurance plan where pretty much everything is covered and you pay nothing out of pocket so you will not care, do not go there. read more

I've had only good experiences here. I tried putting on soft contacts for the first time here; Milly has the patience and loveliness of a saint. Not everyone can be a saint, but the other staff are certainly personable and have never been rude or unprofessional as described by the other reviewers. I also bought glasses here; you'll find the optician has a wealth of knowledge that he is more than happy to share when asked for help. He's funny, interesting, and definitely informative. And he'll give you opinions about what frame works best. My experience with the optometrist himself is limited. I was seen by Dr. Meyer. Thorough (as far as I can tell) and professional. There is a vague sense of rush, but, then again, I've always been brought back in a timely manner. Also, I've only made appointments toward the end of the day. For both contact lens fitting and for glasses pick-up, they have followed up with me well. The place itself is clean, spacious, organized, well-maintained, and in a pleasant location. If you work in NYC, right close to the PATH and you can grab some groceries on the way home from the local overpriced grocery store Morton Williams! read more

I just returned from a visit to the Newport Vision Center and my entire experience from start to finish was first-class. The entire staff was friendly and helpful from the moment I walked in. More then one person helped me while I was looking at frames and I was kept informed of when I would be seen. My exam was thorough and comfortable. The doctor was extremely patient and helpful and did an absolutely wonderful job. On top of all this I actually had a boot put on my car because I parked in front of the office and was over the time limit by a few minutes. Note to anyone who comes here (and I highly recommend coming here) park around back in the parking garage because the Newport Vision Center validates your parking for free. Avoid getting a boot and park around back. I really can't say enough good things about the Newport Vision Center. Great staff, great atmosphere, great experience. Con artist in Pavonia/Newport I went to see Dr. Frank DeRienzo for a routine eye exam. Since I knew these type of businesses like to offer services not covered by the insurance from the very beginning I refused to all additional services offered. I kept saying no thanks, no thanks eye exam only The main reason why I refused additional services and requested eye examination only its because I am being covered through my husband insurance and the coverage is "vision and dental only". Due to time constrain, I was told to return in couple of days to complete the procedure So I did . They dilated my eye pupils & test was completed I received a bill from Dr. Frank DeRienzo for a glaucoma test, I never asked for. The bill is over $600's. I called on several occasions to dispute charges and I was told that I was "properly educated on the nature of the test offered and return on her own will" What I noticed very strange is that when I provided my husband metlife vision number. I was told that its not enough. that they needed to make a copy of my husband medical insurance. The staff is very arrogant & interested in selling you the more expensive glasses and services you don't need. There are two ladies in particular Ms. Kim and another Asian (Philippine) lady responsible for processing insurances. They are the most incompetent individuals you ever came across. Dont give them your medical insurance. You will be billed for services they never provide. See their reviews on google. Please don't go to Newport Vision in Pavonia/Newport. I am going through a bad experience with Newport Vision Care. I will change it if my experience gets better. I went in on Jan 2nd for progressive glasses. I decided I would not go to cheap place but instead treat myself to a good experience. After a test, I was told I'd get my glasses in ten working days. (I gave them my frame.) After insurance, the glasses cost me $325. I called on Friday Jan 13th. No glasses yet- they said they'd call me when they got it. Finally walked in today (wednesday Jan 18th) without waiting for them to call me. They said they would check with the lab and then found my glasses. The doctor tried to dispense the glasses and found that my frame was broken. They blamed it on the lab. They say that the lab will not replace it. I have an allowance of $150 with my plan- but every frame Newport Vision Care have seems more expensive. I did not sign up the lab and not sure why I need to be liable for the frame. Worse, it is now 17 days without any glasses and Uber everywhere has been super expensive (because I am trying not to drive without glasses). Even if I plonked big money and bought a new frame that they want me to do- it will be another week. What could they do? Take responsibility. Eventually between them and the lab, my frame was broken. Give me a comparable frame (I was willing to pay $150 from my allowance). Do a rush job and get me glasses. Work with me to help me see better which is the promise of any vision care store. I'll post further updates as the story develops further. But so far, I'll let you decide based on my experience. read more

I have been a patient of Dr Meyers and went to the office to see if i can buy a box of contact lens for my prescription that was just over a year old. I was appalled by the rude and unprofessional behavior of the front desk staff. The front desk tried to quoted me incorrect price for my contact lens supply until i called my insurance to find out why i was paying so much. The insurance company asked me make sure i get the year's supply for 10 dollars instead of the high price they were quoting. So to sum it up.. As others have also pointed out.. Unprofessional Jersey trash. That's how I'd characterize the optometrist I saw, Frank DeRienzo. Let me elaborate. I went in for an eye exam and when the assistant asked me if I wanted a contact lens exam or an eyeglass exam I responded that I wanted just an eyeglass exam. She took me to the back and did some basic tests before the doctor came in. When he came in he seemed nice and concerned and put me at ease. He asked me why I was there and I told him I just wanted an eye exam. He then asked the standard question if I had any general trouble with my eyes and I mentioned a recent episode where my contacts had bothered me and that I saw an ophthalmologist who said that my eyes were fine. The doctor then gave me the standard eye tests that everyone gets. However, at the end he sort of steered me to the contact lens area and asked me to try on some lenses. I did, thinking that he was trying to get me to buy some lenses from him, etc...which I didn't mind doing as he seemed genuine. He checked my eyes again, gave me some trial pairs and told me to come back and see him in a week. When I got to the secretary she told me that I owed 80 some dollars for the contact lens exam, in addition to my $10 copay. I protested that I was just there for an eyeglass exam and that I made this clear to the assistant I met first. The doctor was in the vicinity so I kind of looked at him and he just said something to the effect of "well you did get a contact lens fitting..." When I again protested, he got very upset and basically turned into the optometrist version of the Soup Nazi. "No contacts for you!" He brusquely ordered me to take off the trial contact lenses and return the trial pairs he gave me. But the way he said it was so unprofessional and rude that I was left totally embarrassed. And the fact that he made me take off the trial pair was utterly ridiculous! Like he was trying to punish me or something. I would have almost been fine with all of this had be been pleasant and professional about it. But he acted like a complete JERK at the end, totally negating any positive impression I had formed about him. Bottom line, stay away from this place and this doctor at all costs. I should have just gone to a doctor in Manhattan like I had originally planned. Normally I heed these Yelp reviews but I didn't do my due diligence this time. Stay away from this place. The doctor is so so but the staff are HORRIBLE. They were so RUDE and IMPATIENT after they took your money. I visited this place about a couple of years ago. I needed an urgent appointment and they helped get one fast. The services were good but were over priced because there are more tests that are done than those required for a contact lens appointment. The optometrist was casual but the front desk were rude when I asked them if they could reverse a charge on a card and put the charges back on my HSA card, and it would mess up their books. If they can't help me on a small request, I don't think they are offering a good service. Visit this place, only if you really need to. read more

Great place. I've been coming here since moving back to Jersey City 8 years ago. I've seen both Dr DeRienzo and Dr Meyer over the years and have found them both excellent. They are both thorough, thoughtful, and conscientious, in a very patient, low-key way. I am incredibly nearsighted, as well as allergic to many contacts, and they have taken a lot of time to work with me to find contacts that are comfortable and effective, letting me try different kinds and brands. Most recently they figured out that my vision qualifies me for "medically necessary" lenses, saving me $800 a year. Above all I always have the feeling that these guys really care about what they do and take the time to do it well. Highly recommend. read more

I did an exam last week which required me came this week for re-check. Even though the doctor said it very loud that he was not there the day that I was booked in. A very rude receptionist still book me that day in. When I came, she told me the doctor was not there and I had to come back the other days. No sorry, very bad attitude!
