There were no brochures laying on his desk for me to go through, he had no pens, magnets or Yeti cups to hand me, his wrist was not supporting a 10lb watch and he talked to me like he was already looking out for my interests, believe it or not, he looked me in the eye and remembered my name. He gave me feedback that was in line with my own predictions and made sense unlike most of my previous experiences. I took the financial plan that was provided and put all by itself in the good pile. I spent another few weeks meeting a few other advisors but decided to give Talon a try when it was time. About a year later I called John and told him it was time, he guided me through getting my 401K rolled over, we set up an account and a short time later I was a customer. Some additional information - the 401K provider I had with my employer had a limited selection, Talon has found a number of good investment options that fit my risk tolerance and have performed at or above my expectations and well above the previous providers options. I had already taken a significant loss of about $35,000 during the market downturn in the fall of 2022. Around that time, I heard about Talon from a radio program and decided to give them a try. I met with a local representative, John, who reviewed my numbers and projected a 12-15% return on my investments. I decided to move forward and invested $228,000 with them in October 2022. What I wasn't told--and what I later learned--was that I could have simply left my existing investments in place and had Talon take over as the manager. Instead, all of my prior investments were liquidated, and everything was restarted from scratch. In 2023, my portfolio returned just 4%, after fees. I had been told their fee would be 1% annually, but I frequently raised concerns throughout the year because half of my money was just sitting idle in a money market fund. By the second year, I was still dissatisfied. I raised my concerns again in the fall, which led to some adjustments--but 2024's return dropped to just 2.6%. I then discovered I was actually being charged 2% per year in fees--not the 1% I was originally told. When I brought this up, they wanted to schedule a meeting to "look into it." At that point, I had already made up my mind to leave. I genuinely believe my account wasn't large enough for them to care about managing it properly.
