I wish there is a 0 star and I will definitely give 0 star. Their class cancellation rules are complex, requiring payment for an extra month if you don't cancel by a specified date. Well organized music school. They teach many different instruments. Nice lobby area, lounge area and kids waiting area. They offer coffee and tea while parents are waiting. There are books, DVD, coloring and iPad games in the kids waiting room. Very thoughtful arrangement. They offer group class and private lesson. Classrooms are well maintained. Not happy with their approach. Had enrolled my kid for intro to music age 3-6. We completed 2 levels and by principle they are supposed to give medals for completion. They only give medals if you pay for next session which is not good as kids are learning to get to that stage. My son was very disappointed as we had to take him out due to financial reasons. read more

My six yr old has been going here for about 6 months and she lives it. Her piano teacher Michael Harris is wonderful and my daughter likes very much. I'm impressed with how much she's learned in such a short time. I would recommend this place to anyone, no problems so far. read more

I originally posted a review with one star because of issues with a staff member. After speaking with the owner, I am changing it to a 4 star. Jessica went above and beyond to make sure that she understood the whole situation that transpired and was upset that my family had a bad experience at her school. After speaking with her my husband and I have decided that we would go back to the school in the future. I was very sad when we left the school last night because of all of the positive reviews and the teachers truly seem amazing. We look forward to returning to choir classes in the fall of 2017. When searching for a meaningful music experience for my 2 year old angel, I found nothing that met my (admittedly high) standards...either too much like a play-date with music simply playing in the background, dirty facilities, or too far away, etc. So, I reached out to Expressions Music Academy and inquired about their group vocal class for 5+. Even though my angel was much younger than the 'required' age, they allowed us to come and check it out. The facility was lovely; warm, inviting, and professional. Although it was decided that my little one was too young to join that particular class, the owner of Expressions agreed to work toward establishing a music program for children under 5...and two years ago, she brought Music Together to the Academy. We've participated in that program for the past 4 or 5 semesters and absolutely love it. When there is a summer break in the program, my angel is SO sad! I continue to be impressed with the caring nature of the teachers and other staff. They are young-at-heart, patient (oh, my, are they patient!), and loving toward their students, all while exhibiting the highest in professionalism. My little one now also asks to 'go to music class early' so we can play in the music lab, which is available to EMA students for no additional fee. My only complaint there, is with some of the parents, who seem to 'check out' and stop parenting once they walk thru the doors. It's wonderful to see that Expressions recently expanded their space to serve the community even better by doubling their physical size. The group music room is huge. The private lesson rooms are lovely, well-equipped and fun...with color 'themes' throughout. Complimentary coffee and fresh water is provided for parents, with a very nice waiting area where they can get some work done, catch up on emails, or simply gather their thoughts in a peaceful setting. We might be outgrowing our little Music Together program soon, but look forward to remaining part of the Expressions Music Academy family for years to come. If you have a young child who would like to try piano lessons, I can tell you that Miss Grace has the patience of 10 preschool teachers, as does vocal instructor Miss Nicolette. Helping children (and the rest of us) develop a love of, and proficiency in, m-u-s-i-c: thanks Expressions...keep up the fabulous work you do. Fantastic environment for students to learn anything music: instruments, vocal, collaboration with other students, performance, recording and more. Everything is developed to get and keep the students (children AND adults) interested, excited and involved. The staff is welcoming, friendly, experienced and accommodating and they make it a fun place to be.. My daughter has been with the studio since they opened and she is still just as excited about lessons and classes as she was in the beginning, thanks to the opportunities available and wonderful staff. I brought my twin four year old daughters to the Expressions Music Academy from a Living Social deal. The Living Social deal was for their group singing class. It was wonderful! The class was led by two teachers, who had an obvious love of music and children. The age range of the group went from ages 4 through 8, and ALL of the children seemed to enjoy the experience. They led the students through various songs and games and were able to keep the class under control while still keeping it fun! The academy itself is really spacious and beautiful and they are running private classes throughout the week. Though we did not take any private lessons, I know they offer private lessons in almost every instrument. I highly recommend this new business! read more

Our children have been taking music lessons at Expressions Music Academy since it opened in 2010. This is by far the best place we've ever gone for music lessons. Expressions combines the space and convenience of a free standing studio with the friendliness and warmth that you'd expect one on one in someone's living room. The front desk staff are energetic and personable and we've been very pleased with our children's instructors. The instructors are both talented and attentive, and everyone there makes sure that you and your children feel welcome and cared for. Our children play different instruments, and we are able to schedule piano lessons, guitar lessons and saxophone lessons in the same place and on the same day! This is such a time-saver for our busy family. I don't have to remind my chidren to practice each week- the instructors keep them challenged and motivated with programs like Bach Bucks, group lessons and practice challenges! For those that want even more, there are opportunities to perform in recitals and compete in yearly competitions. My husband and I also enjoy the large parking lot( I hate looking for parking spaces), spacious waiting room, free Wi-Fi and complimentary coffee! I would recommend stopping in and taking a tour or trying a free lesson! I know once our kids tried it out they were sold. I'm sure your family will love it as much as our does! read more

My daughter was 11 years old when she began taking piano lessons from Jessica. She had previously taken three years of piano lessons from another teacher, whom she loved. Unfortunately, she was claiming that she wanted to quit. She had learned to read music but was still only playing very simple songs that were written specifically for lessons, which meant that they weren't anything anyone would recognize. In addition, she was hardly moving her hands out of their initial position, only playing within one octave with each hand. I thought part of the problem was that she was bored with the music her former teacher was using. We decided to look for a different teacher and are so glad that we found Jessica. She made all the difference in the world! We were thrilled with Jessica's approach. She had some great ideas for using technology to gain our daughter's interest. She sent me email links to YouTube clips of young pianists playing a variety of pieces she thought my daughter might like to play. Then she let her choose the song that she wanted to learn after listening to several options! Right away Jessica increased the complexity of her music and gave her a piece that involved her crossing her left hand over her right to hit a higher note before returning to the lower range. It was fun to play and sounded great! Jessica found arrangements of specific songs my daughter wanted to learn that were within her skill level. My husband and I were completely blown away by the complexity of the beautiful piece she worked on with our daughter so that she was able to perform it flawlessly at her recital just five months later. We have watched Jessica's business grow, starting with her when she was still giving lessons in her home before she opened the studio. Expressions Music Academy is a fantastic space. It's beautiful, clean and full of friendly teachers who all love music and their students. They even provide free Wi-Fi, coffee and tea for the waiting parents. All of the other instructors I have met and observed over the years at recitals have been pleasant to interact with and appear to be outstanding individuals. My daughter is 15 now. She loves playing the piano and because of Jessica's encouragement and skill at nurturing her musicality, she plays it beautifully! Perhaps our gratitude can be best expressed in our daughter's own words. She wrote this poem 2 years ago for an 8th grade English assignment, 3 years after she began taking lessons from Jessica. STOP! When I was younger I came to a stop sign Did I really want to continue Playing piano? I thought about it, I realized that I liked playing But not practicing...I needed a new perspective. I decided to find a new teacher It made all the difference I learned it's all about expression And the way the piece makes you feel I love playing the piano now. I wrote this poem about a decision that I had to make and I used free verse and metaphor. She is currently learning how to use music containing only guitar chords and to play background accompaniment with a band of guitars & drums during her lessons with Melissa now at EMA. My son signed up for a summer camp that was cancelled. Expressions said they emailed me, but I never received it because they had my email spelled with a typo. Of course the email would come back undelivered, right? apparently they didn't monitor that, or call me, or refund my money. I turned up on the morning of camp to find a dark building with no one there. My son is incredibly disappointed, as this was his one big event for the summer. After speaking with the owner, all I received was "sorry", and she didn't think she made any type of mistake. Customer service? I don't think so. Expressions Music Academy has been an exceptional experience for me. As an adult beginner, I have been taking piano lessons for 3 years from the director and owner Jessica. She is an amazing teacher. I have watched her business grow as a result of her high standards for every aspect of her business. She is passionate and committed to creating an outstanding experience for the students. As a parent of two young children, I feel very fortunate to have Jessica as my son's piano teacher. We have been with her since the beginning when the classes were taught out of her house in Novi. Along with the physical growth that her academy has experienced, she has developed a proven, working teaching curriculum and reward system for young kids like my son to thrive. It is very impressive now to see her multiply her success through Expressions. Everyone of the instructors there I met was so nice and patient with kids. I just signed my daughter to start her piano lesson with Ms. Melissa. She is very knowledgable and incredibly patient too. My daughter can't wait to go to her lesson every week. I had two children in Expressions for piano lessons for the last year. It's a beautiful facility and the staff are friendly. However, in our experience with private piano lessons and with the group glee classes as well (which we'd done for four months), the payment policies change frequently and I can't help but feel that we were "nickled and dimed." Policy changes regularly occur without notice or overt consent and it is not until you run into an issue that are made aware of them. Payment is taken up front on the first of the month. You are charged a transaction fee for each monthly lesson (despite there only being one monthly transaction). Children must attend a monthly studio class that we really struggled to see the value of (which you pay separately for). You are charged an annual "membership" fee--currently $60/student. Rates are ~$10/student higher per lesson than I've seen elsewhere, no doubt to cover overhead. But, at the end of the day we felt the policies were an unpleasant surprise and the value wasn't there. Finally, a schedule change caused us to disenroll temporarily--we planned to return in the fall--but the loss of three weeks tuition (b/c we dropped out early in the month), combined with the other payment policies have forced us to find instruction elsewhere. Interestingly, our new instructor was surprised that our children were unable to read music after 11 months of private lessons here. read more

My Daughter signed up for multiple classes with this facility, for over a year. After the last recital, my daughter did not show up for 3 weeks thinking that the class was over. The following month, they took $150.00 from my account. I called the business the same day to have them return the money they took. The owner refused. I asked her why nobody had called when they knew that my daughter wasn't showing up anymore and she said that they have soooo many students and business is really good, since they started 3 years ago and they can't keep up with who's not showing up. Really??? So you just help yourself with my money because you have my account number? They had plenty of time to find another student and refund the money that they took once they have a replacement. Instead, the owner herself is not willing to do anything to keep a student. I was going to sign my daughter up for another class, not knowing that after the recital, they expected my daughter to be there indefinitely! As a business person, the owner should go to a customer service orientation class - on how to retain a customer! It is harder to get new ones than retaining happy family. This business would have gotten more referrals from me! They would have gotten more money from me!!! Customer beware! Be careful when you give them your bank account number or your credit card.... they will help themselves with your account. read more
