Good tacos with a nice atmosphere and decent margaritas…read more Came here with friends from work for a fast bite near our Brock-street office. We shared a big plate of taco ingredients and tortillas. It was all very good and the good news is that with the variety there was something everyone liked. The space was chill and upscale while also feeling trendy. The drinks were also nice, mostly margaritas. In the end, nothing really stood out enough for me to remember or come back for if I wasn't in the area, but it would probably make my easy list of places that won't disappoint near the office.

Unfortunately, Mestizo charges per person and the minimum and maximum is two for this item So I couldn't order for one without paying forty dollars , and I'd be damned to pay that much. Having this rule is ridiculous. I've never been to a Mexican restaurant forcing you to order something that can easily be portioned to one. I ordered a marinated chicken with rice and beans. The beans were out of this world. Such a unique flavor I definitely was not accustomed to in the states. The rice was unfortunately bland. The chicken was marinated in this red sauce and was tasty for the most part. However , when I made my way to the center it became dry and had a weird taste. If you're gonna order this dish, proceed with caution. The dessert really outshined and redeemed my visit somewhat. I ordered the tres leches cake. This dessert is basically like a Mexican version of sticky toffee pudding. There are many overlapping factors. One key difference is tres leches uses a milk and cinnamon base , so it kind of tastes like a horchata cake.

This food had a lot of good points and some that left more to be desired... My first impression was that of the "Chips & Dips" comprising of seasoned tortilla chips (I personally don't like seasoned tortilla chips but they're better than none at all) with a tomato salsa, guacamole, and sour cream. Guacamole-tasty sour cream-really good as it had something mixed in with it tortilla chips-you know my thoughts Salsa-sad... it had a paste-y consistency of a pasta sauce and bordered on sweet rather than fresh and punchy. The salsa should be the cornerstone of a Mexican restaurant, its pride and joy, that which they can bottle up and sell-i'm not likely to get it again. Then I received my chicken chimichanga and was happy to see it with a plop of guacamole and sour cream at either end! Really good flavor! All the meals are served with rice and beans, both extremely nice sides. It was a big portion so I felt we shouldn't have gotten a starter (no one likes that too-full-feeling, and to be honest I'm still feeling full the morning after) I also had a beer, so that was a contributor to my engorged feeling. There was a surprisingly good beer and drink menu. Now comes the service portion of this review... I have mixed feelings, as they were all really nice and friendly servers, but there were so many of them for what was a small amount of patrons. They were all a bit over-eager to serve and overly attentive (ending EVERY visit to the table with an "anything else?") so we weren't always dealing with the same person, creating some awkward exchanges. I think this will get better with time, as they are just young'uns, after all. The manager gave us our bill with an added treat of a sipping shot, for no particular reason other than they want us to come again and bring more people. It was a classy and effective move on his part as I felt it warranted a good review and a second-coming!

I fully intended to come back for dinner, but everything on the menu sounded good and I had skipped lunch. I opted for a burrito to take back to the hotel with me. When I got back to my room and opened up the bag, I couldn't believe how big the burrito was! Wow. As for the flavor? It wasn't bad, but it wasn't quite Mexican food. It's kind of a fusion .. of what, I'm not sure. Regardless, it was a good burrito, the salsa was okay - not great. Chips were disappointing (store bought). I know I'm spoiled being from Southern California, I'm used to getting freshly made chips at most restaurants. I'd definitely eat here again. Expectations have been appropriately managed.

Fish and Chips (what, is that Mexican? or Texan? nope just generic) - tick. It's a massive space as well, and when we were there, there were only 4 other tables. Which made it feel like one of those towns on the Mexican border, where tumbleweeds are blowing and the townsfolk are hiding behind swinging doors. Them ones. Yup, just really average, and really boring. Didn't like this brand of tequila 'n' Tex 'n' Mex very much.

Tequila Tex-Mex - Very tasty. This restaurant is dialed into the flavored and textures of Telmex. Reasonable prices too. Check it out.
