Sales rep Mike Kinsella was first rate. The tough membrane product they applied on the one home appears to also be top quality, and the final repair of the parapet wall (brick work) and the replacement of ceramic parapet wall caps came out well, too. The repaired roof appears to be doing its job and appears much better than the messy, leaking, old roof that was there. Along the way, things got messy and required intervention to keep on track. Seems that coordinating their brick repair team to work on the projects (two homes side-by-side) wasn't as smooth as it could have been. Result: Delays and mis-communication about what/when/how the brick repair (replacement of some loose bricks and the replacement of of some broken parapet tiles) was to be completed. And once that was done, whatever inspection should have been done by the foreman was not done, as brickwork and parapet caps were not replaced correctly or the work was left incomplete. Homeowner had to climb up his ladder, take pictures, send them to EBS and request that this work be re-done. It was eventually agreed that the work needed to be re-done and completed properly, but this meant more delays (weeks) and inconvenience for the tenants and homeowner. Also, there were issues with sloppy clean-up and scraps left up on the roof. Again, these were noticed by the homeowner and reported, but took some time for EBS to get someone there to inspect the situation, agree that clean-up was needed, and then get men there to clean up what should not have been left there in the first place. Nothing goes 100% perfect on complex projects, and the final result is very, very good. But the above problems along the way keep me from giving EBS a solid string of As across the board. read more

Overall, everything was handled in a very professional manner. We were notified at the very end of August that the company that had been providing our homeowners insurance for the last 20 years was pulling out of St Louis due to multiple claims with all the storms, tornados, etc. The company that we have our auto insurance with would not insure us as they said we had three layers of roof so all of a sudden we were thrown into the world of finding a roofer. My wife suggested using Angies List to get some good referrals so we did. The first thing we found out is that we only had two layers of roof. Over the next month, we got several bids and overall they were all within $1500 of each other. But what impressed us most about Exterior Building Solutions was their service beforehand. Salesman Dave Green came out and talked to us twice. The second time was on a Sunday when we signed all the paperwork to be able to get the roof done on Oct 3rd - the day our old homeowners policy would expire. Wednesday morning, workers were there way before 7am and every though it was drizzling a little, they sat tight because they knew we needed to get this done. There were a couple little glitches along the way. such as a shortage of material and they got a little something on the garage door. But both issues were handled quickly and efficiently and the garage door looked cleaner than when they had started. I work in a service industry so this meant more to me than pricing. Our roof looks great and the neighbors are asking who did the work. We were very satisfied and would definitely recommend them!!! And we got our new homeowners policy on Oct 3. We received several bids and met with several local Angie's list contractors and ultimately decided upon EBS. Their quote seemed more in-line with the work and materials selected and we felt like they would be the most responsive and do the best work for us and our home. Our first interaction with EBS was with Mike Grossman who was great to work with. We had lots of questions and several special projects we wanted done during the roof work. Mike was courtesy, professional, knowledgeable and answered all our questions. Once the schedule was set (which was based on our requested timeframe) roof work began quickly. We did have some slight weather delays but the crew reacted quickly and ensured the roof was tarped and materials picked-up. Mike the Project Manager was responsive with calls, visits and follow-ups and as the work began Anthony Grossman (EBS owner) came out personally to ensure everything was to his standards. I appreciated Anthony's visit and inspection and knew I made the right contractor decision. Several days after the roof, skylight, and cricket were installed the siding and shutters were installed by another EBS crew. Work again moved quickly (even with some weather delays) and we were very pleased with finished look. The final invoice was received shortly after and everything was in order and as expected. Overall, our personal experience with EBS was exceptional. Our roof looks fantastic and the skylight, shutters, and siding add that extra pop to the house. This is an updated review for Exterior Building Solutions. I made an appointment for a Roof Inspection on 12/10. Unfortunately there was bad weather and I contacted them to see if they wanted to reschedule. The person who was to perform the inspection agreed and we made another appointment for 12/13. Again, we faced bad weather on 12/13. I did not call to reschedule the appointment and was waiting at my home for the person to arrive. When the person did not call or arrive at my home, I called and left a message. He immediately called me back and said that he would not be able to make it. I was not happy with this communication initiated by me (again) after the scheduled appointment and I left a very harsh review here on Angie's List. Over the weekend I pondered this review and had decided that it was overly harsh and that I was going to submit some changes. After all - the weather was terrible. My complaint was not that he couldn't perform the inspection; it was that he did not show up or initiate any contact. In any case, the job was not going to get done that day whether he called or not. For this reason, I felt that I left an unfair review. Before I could come to Angie's List and submit these changes, I received a call from Exterior Building Solutions with a sincere apology for the situation. That means a lot to me and I absolutely appreciate the gesture. While I have contacted a building inspector to perform the inspection on the roof, I will definitely consider Exterior Building Solutions to perform any recommended work. read more

I used Angie's List to get bids from 5 companies for the roofing work needed. All bids were responsive, but Exterior Building Solutions were one of the lower prices (not the lowest) and offered the best overall quality solution. They were thorough, very responsive, listened to all my concerns and took time to be sure all my questions were answered (I am an engineer so had a lot of technical questions). They were especially helpful in explaining the various solutions available for my flat roof area which needed special attention. Their solution for this area, although slightly more expensive, was clearly the best way to go. No other contractor suggested or offered this solution. Once we signed the contract in September, weather played havoc on our plans for an install date. Material was here, but good weather was not! They were very flexible in waiting until we had several days of dry weather with temperatures well above 50 degrees to assure the best install conditions. This took a wait of almost 6 months. Once scheduled, everything went as planned. Installation was exactly as described with a super clean up job afterwards. Their gutter sub-contractor was also as professional and skilled as Exterior Building Solutions crew. After 1 week, I had one item that needed adjustment (one gutter downspout needed to be shortened by 1-1/2" to get a better outflow through a tube to the end of the house). Had a little problem getting a response to a request for a bid. Found out later it was due to employee not following up. Co-Owner Anthony Grossman got back with me by phone. Came out and gave me estimate for the above work. Also discussed some other issues and he was honest enough to tell me that other work really wasn't needed. Being on a limited income I appreciated that advice. My problem started with storm damage from a tree planted too close to an addition on the back of the house. As the tree grew it branched out and become much too close. Consequently when storm came it batted against and damaged the gutter along this addition. Also one of the branches overhanging the addition did damage to the roof shingles. Rubbed them down. And part of the soffit on the edge just disappeared. Never could find it. Anthony replaced the whole gutter with a seamless one. (Old gutter was in three separate pieces.) Seamless looked so much better. This was done quickly, so much so that one day I came home and it was done! Anthony then came out later on himself and finished up the roof shingle replacement. Matched the old shingles very nicely. Was a hot day and he did a great job. He also replaced the soffit with material I had on hand. All old gutter and shingles were cleaned up and taken away. Nice clean up job. The project occurred in two phases. First was shingle/venting removal & replacement. The crew began on Friday, Oct 12th, 2012 and worked until dark (7 p.m., CDT). They placed tarp over the unfinished areas & the foreman informed me that they would return on Saturday the 13th to finish. The crew returned early Saturday morning & the job was completed by 11 a.m. They performed a sweep of the area for debris & nails both Friday evening & again on Saturday prior to departing. The foreman kept me informed of what was going on & that a different crew would be on site at a later date for the gutter replacement. Gutter removal/replacement occurred on Monday, Oct 22nd. It only took a few hours & again the foreman kept me informed of what would happen. This crew also swept the area for debris after they were finished. Final inspection occurred Tuesday Nov 6th. I am currently waiting on the final bill. I found E.B.S. to be a good company to work with. They provide a project manager (& phone number) to communicate with. The crews worked hard, were proficient & cleaned up after themselves. I had already chosen E.B.S. in my own mind before joining Angie's list & checking them out. That they had a 5% Angie's coupon just sealed the deal for me. read more

I called for a on new flat roof, removing old layers, and other hidden problems, and got it. it did take a while for new roof to be installed, but it was understandable due to recent major storms. I tried other companies and they didn't even call back. because we did have a leak, Mike K went up the day he quoted a price and did a short term patch until new roof could be installed. When he came back to have us sign the contract and give him the go ahead, he did another short term patch in another area I was concerned about. the crew showed up on the day they said,and worked straight for 10 hours and then came back on a Saturday to finish...another 5 hours. They cleaned up and were very pleasant. I am very pleased with their work. From start to finish I was kept informed. from ordering materials, delivery of materials to site, start dates, work that was completed, work they would come back to complete next day, clean-up, billing, quality control inspection, everything. Great. All of this work took place over a span of about 3 months due to timing of stucco repair in between phases. After the work was completed, there was still a minor leak onto the front porch during heavy rain, but they came out soon after and found the problem, which was a simple piece of step flashing that had gotten cut back during the decorative trim process. Pros: -For the most part everyone was professional and willing to work with the various issues that needed to be fixed. -All workers are employees of the company and not sub-contracted out. -Workers were friendly and took time to explain to us every step and work through some of the un-forseen problems that old houses tend to bring up. -End result is an old house that looks new. No more leaky gutters, clogged down spouts, or ugly aluminum siding that does not belong on a craftsman style bungalow. -So far so good on the impossibly persistent leak that we have been dealing with for 2 years, and we have had a couple good rains since they last came out to repair the step flashing that got cut back in the last phase of work. Mr. G responded to my phone call promptly. We arranged to met shortly after 4 that day and when when I got home about 4:10 he was there and had already assessed the problem...then he also checked inside garage attic to find the leakage into the attic there near chimney. He gave an estimate and since he had a good rating on Angie's list I decided to go with him (I did not get bids because there were water spot on my family room ceiling and I was afraid of a big storm--which we had about a week after he got repaired.) We had experienced a failure of a roof vent system in 2008 and had extensive drywall damage and had the roof replaced by a neighbor who is now out of business...so I may have future concerns.I wanted to wait a bit to watch to see if I had a bigger spot, but I think it has been fine since his repair. I will call him again as I do have other concerns. I referred the co. to my son John and also to my secretary whose daughter had them do work at her home as well. I was VERY pleased! My repair was complete in about a week...he had to order shingles and we had to wait over the weekend. Thank you! read more

During several recent, heavier storms since June of this year, I noticed right around the drain/waste vent system's pipe, there was moisture and some dripping. I suspected it was due to a cracked or damaged rubber boot for the pipe's vent on the roof, but access to that is not easy, nor is it something I was comfortable doing myself. As a result, Exterior Building Solutions was the only company I called who not only had a good reputation on Angie's List, but also was available without having to wait 2-3 weeks. They came out within 2 days and were able to confirm my suspicions, as well as give me an overall assessment of the rest of the roof. I agreed for them to make the associated repairs the next day, and thus far I have had no problems with moisture nor water in the drain/waste vent system anymore (it has rained a couple of times fairly hard and I have had no water present near the waste system's pipe anymore). The person who did the job was very nice, accommodating, professional and knowledgeable. I will certainly put them at the front of my list the next time I need any roof repair done. read more

They were very focused on trying to make this experience right and to my satisfaction. A few days Later Leo came out personally to my home and inspected what was missed and apologized about the delays. He understood the problem and has already made changes within the company to avoid future issues. I did get a call a day after he visited to schedule the fixes discussed, and due to the cold weather it was decided that they should be performed in warmer weather which I agreed very much with. On every day or so delay as it got colder I received a call from the installer notifying me when the temp would rise to an acceptable level. They arrived on time, and completed my repairs as promised. It was VERY apparent Leo and EBS understands that the customer is the prime focus and needs to match the work. I have since revised my rating to an A because Leo and his team did the right thing and the communication was exactly how I desired it to be. Thank you EBS for making it right! read more

Called for an estimate on leak repair in our roof. Estimator was very punctual and did an excellent job identifying problem, explaining problem and showing pictures of the problem. Asked about installation of a solar tube which he said he would include with the estimate of the roof repair. Estimate came within the week. Took numerous calls to get a date for repairs to be done. I know the ordering of the solar tube delayed things but once they were reminded about the leak in the roof they sent Mike out promptly to fix the plumbing stacks. Mike was great. He got right to work and communicated everything done. Other than no more leaks you could not tell Mike was here. Everything was cleaned up! Once the solar tube came in Mike was right out. Again, he did a great job. He was very excited about the installation of the solar tube which was fun. We are very happy with the solar tube and are thinking about having another one installed....by the same company! read more

The process started a little rough, but the smooth ending more than made up for the bump. I contacted 3 roofing companies after suspecting I had roof storm damage. 2 of the 3 came in with bids in the $7500-8000 range, but EBS (this company) originally gave me a bid over $10,500. I was stunned by the bid, but the consistently strong Angie's List reviews for this company made me want to try to figure out what happened. I called one of the co-owners (Leo) directly and told him the situation - he was very surprised and also wanted to find out the problem. Turns out I had a newbie salesman who simply messed up the bid. This incident is the only reason I gave them a B on price. But Leo went way above and beyond to try to get my business after I called him. He was at my house on my roof himself within 24 hours and came in with this bid of $7910, including the ridge vents and architectural shingles. read more

I originally contacted EBS about a small roof leak. While Mike Kinsella was checking out the leak, I asked him to also bid a new gutter and new siding on the back part of my small, one story, city bungalow. Mike made some recommendations and promptly e-mailed me a bid. Due to some unforeseen circumstances, I did not contact EBS for 5 months. I finally decided to only go ahead with the gutter work. I sent Mike an e-mail and asked him if he needed to re-look at the gutter or re-bid. He promptly sent me a revised bid (to only do the gutter work). A few days after I sent in half the payment, I stepped out my back door and realized the work had been done. Mike was easy to contact and prompt in replying. The work was done professionally and quickly. Everything was cleaned up afterward so well, I didn't even know they had been there. Process was very professional. Sales person came to the house, took photos of the roof and trouble spots to confirm we needed a new roof, then briefed us on options including clever new roof vents with eave air intakes to provide attic ventilation. Their bid was in the middle of two others, but their thoroughness and attention to detail was what convinced us to go with EBS. We expected the work to take 2.5 to 3 days...actually did it in a day and a half. Work crew was courteous, quiet, and attentive to the shrubs. Clean up was outstanding with a couple of follow ups to ensure they got all the nails and trash. All in all a very satisfying experience. We hired EBS, which was neither the cheapest nor the most expensive. But Anthony spotted things the other guys overlooked or wanted to charge extra for. When the day arrived, the crew, led by foreman Jose, was professional, courteous, neat and friendly. They came back the next day to clean up (a Saturday of a holiday weekend), and then Jose returned one week later to put a few finishing touches on the project. Anthony came out on a Saturday once again to inspect the work for himself - again, the attention to detail is impressive. We didn't expect to have to replace our roof any time soon, but our experience with EBS made it easy. We have already personally recommended EBS to other clients. read more
