I have always had a great experience with ECU. Whether it be the efficient loan processes (I've financed 2 cars with them), the low interest rates, or the grants I've received for student programming. Ashley Fordyce has built a great relationship with our school building. She's professional and an overall kind person. I've worked with her 10+ years. They offer cash incentives just for consulting with you about your credit, and will even come to you to do it! Our school has received tens of thousands of grant money over the years for student programs. I was able to fund a field trip and start a yoga club thanks to to money granted. More recently, Robyn went the extra mile. She stayed in the phone and helped me navigate the snakes at the car dealership who tried to convince me to go with their lender at a higher rate! I just felt compelled to tell the real story. Like a previous customer said, all institutions have their growing pains. Fundamentally, ECU is of the community, for the community and I dare you to say the same for these big banks. Think low interest rates, think relationships with schools. read more

Have been banking with ECU for years. Last year a data breach happened (through) a 3rd party company they were using where absolutely all of our personal information was leaked. I was furious they'd let this happen. After speaking my peace they had a lawyer reach out where we discussed a resolution. After the conversation i reached out later only to be ignored. Today i go to check my account and theirs a new user agreement. Getting into the fine print agreeing to it essentially absolves them of any wrong doing or liability even if they are in the wrong. As well as limits your ability to go after them for any wrong doing. Further more i do not have access to my accounts unless i agree to this effectively debanking me by keeping me from accessing my account information. Federally they are not legally allowed in any capacity to force you into signing a contract under the laws of Duress. I suggest you read before signing and decide if you continue to want to bank with ECU im wondering if i now need to close my account and switch to another institution. Yes, it is illegal for a company to "force" you to sign a contract; signing a contract should always be a voluntary act where both parties agree to the terms, meaning you have the right to refuse if you disagree with the contract's contents. Key points to remember: Duress: If a company uses threats or intimidation to pressure you into signing, this is considered "duress" and can make the contract legally invalid. No coercion: A company cannot force you to sign a contract by withholding employment, benefits, or other important considerations. Legal recourse: If you feel pressured to sign a contract, you can consult a lawyer to discuss your options and potential legal actions. In other words they know they've done wrong and dont want to be held liable for it. I have only agreed so that i have access to my accounts i in no way agree to the terms of this and am stating publicly that the forced attempt of getting me to sign this by removing access to my account renders this agreement null and void. read more

This is an absolutely awful bank. They randomly will "hold" large amount of money without your consent regardless if that's the money you need to feed your family. Numerous of times my husband and I have went grocery shopping and had them decline the purchase because we "spent over the daily limit". Not to mention they've just been holding 400 dollars because they feel like it. Closing this account as soon as possible but I'm sure that will be an ordeal as well. read more

Do not bank if you want to keep your personal information a secret. Every employee has access to your bank information and home address. Even the School community relations coordinator Ashley Fordyce. This gave her access to know where you frequent for lunch and knows your address and will drive by your home and had learned my and my family's spots. Apparently, she also has this access at her home and will look into multiple peoples accounts. I do not feel safe having my money in a place and a person who can look and see my charges especially someone who is not on the financial side of things. And who has access to anyone's account when at home. Knowing my morning coffee run or where I take my child for activities or where I go on my lunch break. This is not safe. read more

Preface: I have been a member of this bank since I was a child. I'm nearly 40 now. I haven't actively banked with Extra Credit Union since 2015. I stopped banking with them because their hours weren't convenient and I kept running into issues with accessing my account & using my debit card. I opened an account with a bank closer to home and redirected all my bill pay. Fast forward to 2019. Yesterday I received two notices in the mail saying that I had a negative balance of $54 on my savings account with ECU. I had only only left a meager amount in there, but I still couldn't quite understand why it would be negative by that amount. I called, got passed around a few times, and finally got in touch with Lisa in Compliance, who was fantastic. Lisa let me know that not only did I have a negative balance on my savings, I had apparently racked up charges in the thousands on my checking account due to an overdraft from 2015. That's right- an overdraft from 2015 after I had moved my banking, which I had not been notified of until 2019. 75% of the outstanding charges were from fees/penalties from something that happened in 2015. My savings had been depleted due to 'paper statement' fees. I've never once received a paper statement. I found out my IRA that had been sitting there was also being hit with a $50 annual fee. And of course I can't move that unless I come in (during business hours when people like myself can't make it across town because we're working). And I can't close things out until I pay off my balance owing... on an account I haven't used since 2015. I literally don't even know the account number or have an online login. I can't even verify that charges occurred. I'm shocked, and I'm upset. This credit union was great to me and my family for a long time, and I respect that. I got my mortgage here back when I was 25, and I've directed others to come here for personal & auto loans. But would I recommend them now? Absolutely not. Not because the piddly amount of my IRA is being held hostage until I pay up, but because I would expect a small credit union to be at least a little more proactive in contacting a lifelong member who clearly wasn't actively looking at their account and had no idea that anything negative was happening. I expect them to at least CALL, even once, to collect. I'll pay this off, and I'll make sure that these accounts are closed. And I'll make sure anyone considering going to this bank knows exactly how little they care about their members, and how poorly they communicate any issues. read more

I have belonged to this CU since, well, way back. While they've had growing pains at times, they have always been consistently helpful and efficient. I've had several loans through them, and they were quick to approve and the auto-pay is great. Their rates and specials are also good and very competitive. Everyone at all of the branches have been great and so friendly. I'm sad that they closed the Centerline branch because it was much more convenient, but the main branch isn't that much further. I've never had any problems with their website -- it's always accessible and a nice way to keep track of your accounts. It has a lot of nice features and they even have an iPhone app. After having to have some accounts at BofA (which is maybe the worst bank/business on the planet), I was able to close them and do all my banking at ECU. I appreciate them even more now! read more

Two words of advice: Stay away. Had problems from the beginning. Reps are not knowledgeable nor straightforward with customers. The have rules that resemble the big box banks and do not seem to subscribe to the philosophy of being a credit union. Their motto of "...where nothing is stopping from us from lending to you" is a total falsehood and seems to fall under the legal definition of false advertising. Wish there was a no star option for this review. Closed my account and have found a credit union that actually practices the philosophy of being member owned and oriented. They charged me multiple fees for using the money I had available, no one could explain how it happened. After writing an email requesting that they correct the error, I was ignored. My mom, myself and the rest of our family banked through them for years. They used to be called Metro Credit Union with the office near Centerline. They moved and renamed to Extra Credit Union. When my mom passed away from cancer, they froze her account and took the remaining assets. They claimed they had legal rights because they had a debt that had to be paid. The fact is that the first thing that gets paid is funeral expenses, not a personal loan. They knew we didn't have money for an attorney and they didn't care. After 20+ years of my mom banking there they didn't let us bury her, which is what was, morally and legally, the right thing to do. The problem with these credit unions is they get legal and banking hacks who can not get a job at a real bank. If it was Chase or Bank of America, they are real professionals and would have followed the rules. These guys are like the IRS agents who can only get a job with the government, they are jerks and act like they know more than everyone else. Absolutely abhorrent. read more

I have used credit unions for well over 20 years. I have never been offered services to fix my credit! I am most impressed by the secured credit card service they have. The payment comes right out of my check, which means no late payments to report. The APR is lower than I was able to find anywhere else. The entire staff were friendly and helpful. I tried to call the bank you get a lien release for a vehicle being traded in by a customer. The bank had the wrong vin the whole time, making the lien release void. Now I have to jump through hoops for fix YOUR mistake. Once I FINALLY get the paperwork "they are requiring" and fax it to them, I tried to call back and confirm. The phone is answered, and I can hear people talking in the background. They promptly hung up on me, without saying a word to me, because it was near the end of the day and they wanted to be lazy. I WILL BLAST THIS REVIEW ALL OVER AND TELL MY CUSTOMERS TO NOT GO THROUGH YOUR BANK! Customer service and dependability is key!! read more

Do not bank here. They will charge you excessive fees on your loans and bank accounts. They say that they are a credit union "working for you" but they have no problem taking your money. Horrible establishment! Hidden fees all the time for ridiculous services! I've been trying to close out my account for TWO months now and can't! I work til 5-530 everyday so I can't make it there for business hours. Also when I try to sign in online or through my phone it either does not work at all OR it says my username/password is wrong; which I know is NOT the case!! Oh and cherry on top, when I go to PAT (their phone ATM service)...it says my PIN is wrong. BS!!! Then how can I use that exact pin to get $$ out of an actual ATM?!?! So, I get a letter from these idiots telling me about "exciting" changes they've decided to make to my checking account. Such as insuring the cell phone I don't own. And for all of these "great new services" which I neither requested or want, they're "only" going to charge me $5 a month. I e-mailed their jokingly titled "customer service" department, congratulating them on their new joint business venture with the insurance industry, and inquiring if closing my account was the only opt-out option for their "exciting" changes to my account. That was a week ago. The next day, I e-mailed them stating I was still waiting for a reply. Looks like I have to dump Extra Insurance Credit Union over the upcoming holidays. Paying for services I don't want? That's the sort of garbage we expect from the government, not a hack lending institution. The clowns running ECU seem to think they're doing us a favor by borrowing our money and lending it to others for interest, in as much as they can take whatever liberties they want with our money. The interest paid on savings/checkings accounts these days is a joke. But not as big of a joke as Extra Insurance Credit Union. One of the worst credit unions. Stay away. Manager has a smart mouth (lady). I tried depositing a check in one if my employees accounts and they denied it. Why was it denied? It was just a deposit. We recently took advantage of their advertised offer of a low interest MC to switch balances to. I think the offer was 4.99, which was much better than the 11.99% we were paying. So, having banked there for over 30 years, we went with it as we trusted them. First, when checked online, we found we did not receive the low interest as promised, so we had to call on that. This month I looked up the bill, to make a payment, and there are two charges in February, and two in March amounting to about $16 per month. The descriptions say Credit Life & Credit Disability. Turns out those fees are insurance fees being charged to us, to protect their "investment." These fees essentially raise the cost of the loan from 4.99% + 4.34% to 9.33%! Now only a 2% difference from what we were paying - and we were never told about these fees. Had they told us, we wouldn't have made the transfer. I'm waiting on their response, but I'm sure they'll say it's in the paperwork that we signed off on - and that it's our responsibility to read. Which, of course, it is. Point is - don't trust them to tell you everything about any of their services, because they won't - you'll have to read about it before you sign. Just an aside - I read one of the complaints that said they tried to make a deposit into another person's account, and were refused. I have done that for years, but it depends on the teller you get. I have been refused, left and came back, got a different teller and succeeded in making the deposit. I mentioned this, and was told there's no reason a teller can't accept a deposit for another person's account. read more

This bank has the right mentality to help those in bad financial standing but has poor execution. They don't communicate or followup on loan decisions to know if you are approved. They also do not value confidentiality and listen well to collect and give information to the underwriters. They disclosed my fiance information to me when I mentioned that my fiance got approved for a certain amount of money where we make close to the same amount to be approve for the same amount and has the same credit score as me. They also looked into my account with them to see what I spent which no bank does and nowhere states that they will do that on the policies and procedures. In the credit process for a flexline, they incorrectly collected and sent my income to the underwriters without verifying all the income I have and writing done the wrong amount that was previously discussed when I opened a checking account. I was denied by Loan Officer Jamie after never being contacted and lied to with previous loan officer Amanda Work. Amanda Work sent an email to my fiance without my consent stating to call her, which she never sent as my fiance looked in his emails and spam folder and was not there. Her email would not be blocked or be in spam as my fiance setup his account which she emailed to him as he went through a similar bad experience. This bank does not care about their remote bankers and cater only to their onsite bankers. Stay away from this bank at all cost. Come if you are okay with your personal information being given to others, lack of communication, them in your account going by what you spent instead of your credit history, and not listening to you as they gather and send your information wrong to the underwriters for a decision, and lies with excuses when they never contact you about your application for any financial services with them, Their are better alternatives elsewhere despite have a poor credit score and lending power. -10 stars for this bank. read more

The service here is awesome! I don't think I would find a better place to bank. Everyone is extremely kind and down to earth. It's not all business, they make you feel comfortable. Wether you just want to open a checking and/or savings account, or apply for a loan, you can expect to leave there satisfied and happy. I was still a new member, not being there very long yet, when I wanted to buy a car but was having financial problems, plus not to mention, not~so~good credit. I walked in there not knowing what to do, thinking I was financially ruined. I left feeling like all my problems were solved. It was as if they took all my problems off my shoulders and took care of them! I think the lady even had happy tears in her eyes for being able to help me out. I would not recommend this bank. low tech no tech. fees on fees I just opened an account two weeks ago, big mistake, no ATM access well you would need a tank of gas and a map to find one. I was told 711 take them. well not all 711's do. one fee after another, no 24 hour service , very substandard for this day and age. so glad my wife and I didn't transfer our other accounts 401K, Roth, etc. shop around there are better banks much better in my opinion. and this bank as no veterans or disabled veteran services or benefits. Not good at all. i was told not to bank here. but I didn't listen. lesson learned, lost out on money and time dealing with this mom and pop outfit. they are very happy to take your money and will not help or do anything keep your business. it's such a small bank you would think it would be run better. and be high tech. oh and the drive through will take out your rims. bad design. bad service. hours are bad also. shop around there are better banks and CU out there. read more

Well its a long story but I went to them 8 months ago for a personal loan. Chauna Ace helped me open my account, now mind u I was already approved for a personal loan which is all I wanted. But she said I needed to open a checking account with them and bring my car loan to them to show experience with them. Was approved for the car loan she kept calling and calling not sure why I didnt close on car loan yet. Well turns out the week I signed for the car loan they were taking the payment out of my checking account. Less than a week later for the car payment. I went in there for my checks that she didnt order until a month later after which I had paid for them. Needless to say I never got the personal loan dont need nor want to deal with this credit union at this point. If I could say one thing this place sucks. I f******* up screwed up leaving tcf bank. Also there website sucks u cannot log on all the time its constantly down. read more
