My dad loves the quick food options..... me, I'm still on the fence about gas station food, but I do love those damn raspberry filled donuts they sell by the box! They remind me of when I was a kid and hostess sold them. I may or may not have bought many to take home. Don't judge me ha ha. Not all Mavericks are created equal, and this is one of the more compact ones. There are two larger…read moreones both about a mile away if you need more space, but this is great for a quick stop on your way to the freeway. This one only has 8 spots to fill up and normally at least one is open. It can be a little awkward to access them depending on which ones are filled, but they do have extra room around them and multiple driveways to enter or exit from. When I have gone inside, the people working have been nice. They still have a good soda fountain too! Inside is stocked with snacks but not as much hot food since this is one of the smaller locations.

But the customer service and friendliness of the staff is what keeps them coming back. The people behind the counter are genuinely nice and happy to be there-or at least fake it really well. The reason I docked a star from the rating was the difficulty in maneuvering the parking lot/gas pumps. It's always busy and pretty awkward. But I guess that's just a side effect of being a place that so many people want to visit.

They haven't spent the last year since my original review refurbishing the place. It still squats there on State Street. But you can't beat the Redbox/Carwash comobo for convenience. On a recent late night we arrived home from a long road trip and a day of familial nuptuals and needed to stop off to buy a loaf of bread. Sure as shootin' they we got the last loaf of butter-top what goodness from the shelf. Granted, it was priced (per ounce) the same as raw tungsten ore, but they had it there. But I don't love that you have to enter from 700 West--there's no driveway from 7200 S. The snack area and other road essentials is more spacious than your typical gas station, so stretch out and grab your jerky, fill your mug, and look at the priceless tchotchke for sale. Regarding the car wash--I dunno if they give one to everyone, or what. Clearly they're trying to upsell you on a more expensive one, but when I went there today I got a "you've earned a free car wash you can upgrade" just after swiping my card. I opted not to swipe but still got my carwash code on the receipt. So we'll see what happens. I will redeem at the Holiday just a few blocks away at the corner of 7500 S and State Street.

If you want the cheapest gas in the Fort Union Triangle (with Sandy to the South, Midvale to the…read moreWest, Cottonwood Heights to the East), you go to the Shell station. Talk about a niche market: People living or working around the Fort Union triangle who are too cheap to get a membership -- or too lazy to drive 5 miles -- to Costco. On this night, we fit that description. They have ... let's just call them the sparsest amenities of any gas station in the area. While the TWO amply lit Maverik "Adventure's First Stop" (less than a mile apart!) were packed, we shared the Shell station with a night clerk and some grizzled dude in an ancient Ford Taurus who parked in front of the door ... and was just there to buy a pack of smokes. There was an old Simon & Garfunkel song, "A Heart in New York", where the song goes "Lookin' down on Central Park, Where they say you should not wander after dark." Well substitute "Central Park" with "the Shell Station on Fort Union Boulevard." Well, I'm exaggerating, but I'd turn the safety off your mace ... just in case ;) Again, we were there for the cheapest gas, and Shell has everybody in a 5-mile radius beat.

Was there anything before Netflix? How did life happen before streaming? I'll tell you what I have streamed, and that's a Slurpee (see what I did there?). Why are they good? And by good I mean awful. And by awful, I mean, are they actually good? There's something perfectly nostalgic about a wild cherry Slurpee, and whenever I get a hankering, I come to 7-11. And that's about once every 5 years. Unfortunately, last time I came here they weren't very prepared and I remembered that they have a 7-11 on 7200 now (maybe it's been there forever, I don't really recall) and it seems to be a bit more Slurpee-ready and customer friendly. This spot seems to be a little less shiny and a little less cared for, but there are far worse in the area, so it's a suitable SEV if you need one.
