The Windwhistle is a large Inn, with a variety of different types of seating, form the spacious sun-soaked tables of the Orangery, that leads to outside tables that maximise the magnificent view, to the more classical pub tables in the bar. It even has its own forty seater restaurant and function room, this is a big place. Wanting a decent meal, after a dining disaster the previous evening, we would not be disappointed. Friendly and helpful staff, that seemed genuinely interested in what we had to say, was a promising start, as was the wide ranging menu and well stocked bar. The menu had a good range of dishes, from standard dishes like scampi and curry, to the daily specials, above the fireplace. My wife and I plumped for the special of prawn and monkfish Thai Curry. When the curry arrived I was staggered by the portion size, over ten sizeable chunks of monkfish, huge tiger prawns, sticky rice, a spicy Thai curry sauce and a huge bowl of noodles. It tasted as good as it looked, full of flavour, a hearty filling meal, just what we wanted. It was fairly pricey at around £14, but worth every penny. The strawberry pavlova dessert to follow was equally generous and very tasty. Rounding of the meal a good strong cup of coffee, I was tempted to give the Windwhistle five stars for the overall blend of great service, wonderful food and a brilliant setting, but that would require further visits; just wished we didn't live so far away!

Front of house staff are very pleasant and efficient too. This place has long been a favourite haunt for people that want a decent meal in town and it's my local restaurant as it's just down the hill from me. So I was hoping that it would be blinder so that me and the missus could wander down for dinner and drinks on a regular basis and not have to fork out a taxi. Unfortunately not. The menu lacks imagination, and appears to be devised by someone who really can't be asked with doing anything new and interesting. For instance there was a choice of 5 starters, almost all of which were repeated in the main course section, i.e. mussels as a starter or a main, crab cakes as a starter or a main, etc. The other odd thing was the mussels, listed as local - well they can't be that local as we're not near the sea. Furthermore, after a bit of questioning the kitchen (thank you very helpful front of house girls) it transpired that their mussels were supplied by Samways in Bridport. Now Samways is a very good supplier, but their mussels come from wherever they can get them, mainly Cornwall, Wales but sometimes from Scotland. The local mussels (well as close as you can get) are from Portland which can be very dirty. I suspect our mussels were from Cornwall due to the clean shells, but that's a pure guess. One page of the menu was dedicated to steaks - every type imaginable. The girlfriend as ever went for fillet steak, even after my advice to the contrary. My worst fears were realised when this thing came out, which although technically fillet, didn't really look like one, more like a sirloin with the fat cut off. It also had no real flavour, cue more pepper sauce. In summary, I'd rather spend the extra money when going out and go somewhere great, like The Green in Sherborne. Maybe I need to move there? We've stayed in the family room on the top floor and a large twin on the first and both had great beds and bedding. The bar is a bit dismal and doesn't have any outstanding beers (for those you have to go to Rock Point and drink Doom Bar). Hence only four stars. The pool is great for adults and kids alike if the weather will not permit sea swimming. Off street parking though not secure is a boom in such a cramped old town centre and is worth paying extra for. But the piece de resistance is the cooked breakfast. All locally sourced products and you can customize to your heart's content, all for £13! Non-guests welcome. Highly recommend. They even do good coffee which is highly unusual for a traditional English hotel.

The 'A la Carte' menu had five or six choices for each course, the price for two courses being a very fair, but not 'budget', £28 and £36 for three courses. Starter, Main and Pudding were £28 and £24 was offered for two courses. The food was contemporary, with a traditional twist! The portions were generous without being excessive, the quality very good and the service attentive and friendly. Very impressed, will go there again.
