But from the very first class, I felt supported and encouraged. The instructors were incredibly patient and skilled at breaking things down step-by-step. They created such a positive and motivating environment that I started looking forward to each session. Over time, I built not only my swimming skills but also my confidence in the water. I really appreciated how flexible and accommodating the team was with my schedule. Since I work full-time, evening classes were the only option for me, and they made it easy for me to attend consistently. On occasions when I needed to reschedule, they were always understanding and helpful, which made a huge difference in staying committed. Now, I can swim confidently--something I never imagined I'd be able to say. I'm so grateful for the progress I've made and for the dedication of the entire team here. I enrolled in the 6-week class, M-Th, for 10 minutes, and the amount of time it took me to prepare my child for swim class, pack up, get her in the car, pack snacks after, etc., for ONLY 10 minutes ... was not worth the stress. After 4 weeks (so far) of swimming with Kim, I haven't seen much improvement in my daughter's survival swim technique ... if anything, she says "NO SWIM" and doesn't want to go to the pool even more. I was hoping that based on how much we paid, we would get a more "tailored" class, with communication to the parent on what can be worked on or what skills my daughter can continue practicing, but it feels like the class is so impersonal. Kim teaches the same thing to every child, and when I ask her what I can practice on with my child, she says, she needs to come to swim classes more. I feel like it was a waste of $1,200 and 6-weeks. When I took my daughter on vacation, I felt like I taught her more in one week at the hotel pool, than the last 6-weeks my daughter had with Kim. I know that it takes time ... especially with a 2.5 year old, but I feel like the classes can be Things that I think she needs to improve on, if parents are paying THAT MUCH MONEY: 1. Give parents a "weekly report" on skillsets that the child worked on and things to continue practicing. Almost like a progress report, with tips on how to improve. 2. Text & communicate with the parent on what the child's strengths and weaknesses are. At the end of the class, my daughter could float on her back ... and kick to the stairs, so I guess that's successful. But, she refuses to go back to swim class. I think she was traumatized. She said "No Swim Teacher Kim." I should have waited until she's older .. but thought this was crucial. Did my daugther remember anything, NO.

Major, our instructor, was the best; super chill, encouraging, and made everyone feel like they could actually do this. He said he's heading up to NorCal later this week, so we're already sad we won't have him next time. He kicked things off with about 30 minutes onshore, rules, safety just learning the basics and getting our balance, then it was straight into the waves. And yes, everyone actually stood up and surfed! The kids thought they knew the ocean from boogie boarding, but this was a whole new level of fun. Lots of wipeouts, tons of laughs, and those "I can't believe I just did that" moments. Eric, the owner, was awesome too, quick with texts, super helpful with any little hiccups, and just made it all easy. Such a fun, unforgettable experience. My 10 year old son started at RTS a year ago after several years at a public school in the county. He was so anxious at the public school: most of the kids there would run out the gate at 3pm wanting to get out of there, with my son being very upset if I was even a few minutes late. His clothes were frayed at the wrist and knees from him chewing anxiously on them, he was labeled the class clown because he was always trying to lighten the mood. Most of the "teachers" kept asking if he had ADHD or another learning disability. We knew that he did not, and so decided to try changing his environment. We started in January (so glad that we were able to start mid-year) and the dramatic difference in his happiness, behavior, sense of connection and community has been VAST. It's such a testament to the incredibly thoughtful space Natasha and Jim Bailey have co-created. The kids can choose what they do each day, with climbing trees or chatting with friends being a perfectly valid activity (there's so much learning in everything.) My son is building things, mastering design and 3D printing, playing 3 instruments without any lessons (and no urging to practice), has created his own small business and is learning entrepreneurialism and team management. All at the age of 10. (What was he learning in the other school? How to survive the day and do what other people told him to do...) The Rock Tree Sky model (or Sudbury model, the first democratic school) isn't for everyone, but we've found it more appropriate in preparing our son for life during this modern time than traditional school was. If you have any doubts or concerns about this model, a great book I was recommended was Peter Gray's Free To Learn. Note that there are no formal lessons, no strictly age-segmented classrooms (amazing), and no "teachers" only "mentors". There are rules of conduct and there are offerings each day that kids can choose from: cooking, carpentry, sewing, gardening, pottery etc. but most of them choose their own adventure each day. Isn't that what we're all doing? Isn't that what life is about?! I can only speak with the utmost respect for this learning environment and warm community. I know that the kids here are destined for brilliant things, with so many supportive people gently guiding and cheering them along the way. Ps. You can apply to the Summit program via OUSD, which is a homeschool program integrated into RTS, which also subsidizes some of the tuition and offers a more traditional classroom experience for a couple of hours a week. It's incredibly affordable compared to other private schools here, but again - it's not for everyone. If your family values self-directed learning (and living), we highly recommend RTS!

The school sits in 2 beautiful locations in upper Ojai and your finding space for your little one may prove to be slightly difficult, so I highly recommend that you get on that wait list STAT. The teachers/mentors are the very best of the best and the kids are amazing. This is one of those schools that your child will never want to leave. I honestly don't have the ability to write all that needs to be said so I will leave it to you to go and give it a visit. Oh, their logo happens to be pretty damn beautiful too. 5 stars.
