There is a trainer (I think his name is M.J) who is overly flirtatious with female members and in my opinion crosses the line for what is appropriate behaviour. In a fitness studio, it is important to create a safe and trusting environment where members do not have to worry about unsolicited comments that can be perceived as a sexual nature. People want to feel confortable when they're working out - they are in a vulnerable position where they worry about their body, how they look, and will often compare themselves to others. This is not the environment to be taking advantage of people's insecurities for their own personal gain. I sincerely hope that a better job can be done by the management in training employees on how to create and keep a safe space for its members.

Class and Atmosphere: The intensity is quite good with…read more500-600 calories burned on average. The class is usually divided into 60 mins: 20 mins treadmill, 20 mins weights, 20 mins rowing. The one instructor is shared amongst all areas of the class. The instructor will call out instructors for all 3 sections. There is TV screens to provide video examples of how to perform the weight-based exercises. I found that the sharing of the instructor was a bit less interactive, than other studios like F45 where you get more attention from the instructor and do not have to rely on a TV screen or peers as much. I also found the cost of the class to be a bit high considering you are more self directed on the treadmill and the rowing machines, so 2/3 of the class cost is really to do things without alot of attention or instruction. Instructor: The instructors all have decent energy, but I found that it did not push you as hard as other locations I have been to. There is one personal trainers during the class that go around and motivate you, correct your form, ensure you are pushing yourself while being safe and enjoying the class. Fitness Level: I found the instructors here tended to prioritize safety over wanting to have the highest possible intensity. I had my treadmill turned down for speed because I was going "too fast". That is something to note, that the demographic is a bit on the older age group (late 30s-50s) and if you are a young adult you may not feel motivated by your peers. I would say there are certain injuries that would be hard to do in this class. If you have a leg or back injury this would be difficult with lots of burpees, jumping, running, cycling, rowing. Those are common exercises that would be difficult to modify. Amenities: There is a water bottle station. There are areas to place your belongings but they are not locked. The stations are well cleaned, and instructors provide cleansing wipes for the equipment as you switch to different parts of the class.

I've taken classes with Dustin, Sam and Barbara (my favourite classes were with Barbara). They were all super enthusiastic, knowledgeable, gave attention to each individual, and set up exercises/drills/circuits that were hard and diverse, and usually as challenging as I wanted to make them. Everyone in the classes I attended were at different places in their fitness journey, and I never felt any pressure from the instructor to go too ham or do anything I was uncomfortable with. Overall the vibe was friendly and warm and not competitive. Although I'm taking a break from circuit, HIIT, and more strength building classes- I can't tell you how much I've been *loving* the Yoga Bar(re) expansion they created upstairs. I can't express how happy I am to have a yoga/barre studio that's a five minute walk from my place. I did the Barre class this morning and it was the best Barre style class I've ever taken. I did think the change room upstairs was a bit weird- sorry to whoever designed it. I just think it's very small and there is no space between the change area and bathrooms stalls, I generally like more privacy between going to the washroom and changing. I think it would be better if they removed the stalls and put in a single room for a toilet, with an actual door, if that makes sense. Either way, I'm really looking forward to taking more classes at this part of studio. Another thing I think would be awesome was if they offered more retail wise- I guess I just like to shop. I mainly did the…read moreclasses and open gym, although I lucked out when I first showed up by being the only person to attend a free barbell training clinic Marv (the owner) was running. I learned a lot in the session and signed up that night. If you want to get strong, this is the place for you. Ditto if you want to get in shape, and if you want classes that are both challenging, interesting, and varied. On the other hand, if you care more about the amenities in your gym's change room than the equipment in the workout area, you are better off going somewhere else. Likewise, if you all you want to do is use cardio machines, I would encourage you to try one of Blast's classes with an open mind, and failing that, go somewhere else. One example of what I like about Blast is how it is perfectly acceptable at Blast to drop your barbell if you are doing deadlifts or olympic lifts. They have bumper plates (i.e. plastic coated weighted plates) and understand that when you lift heavy it's not reasonable (or even safe) to gently put the barbell down. Sadly many other gyms forbid dropping weights. Another great thing about this place is the sense of community fostered amongst the members, and how people are happy to spot you on the bench press, let you work in a set on the squat rack or lifting platform, etc. In terms of the equipment my favourite thing is the strongman type stuff they have. Specifically the giant tires you can flip, and the prowler/weight sleds you can pull with a rope and then push back to the start. There are also Kettlebells all the way up to 70 lbs, which is a heavier weight than most gyms carry. Lastly, the trainers are a great group of people. The owner and head coach Marv practices what he preaches, and he has a dynamic mix of trainers, some that work for Blast and others that rent out space for their own classes. They all work together and cooperate though. I'm leaving the country for work soon, and other than my siblings Blast is what I'll miss most about Toronto!

Outside of that, the class was motivating. They give you special shoes that fit into the groove of the bike because you're standing up on the bike a lot and moving. My instructor was Bea and she had a fun playlist. You do burn a lot of calories because of the intensity. She did 5 minutes of weights and 5 min of stretches. They pass out a nice cold towel at the end of the class. As a cautionary note, a lot of lockers weren't locking. So make sure to test it before you go into the class.

And at such a high stress moment in my life, this studio is more than I could've asked for. It's convenient location (downstairs from the apartments where I was staying) served as a reprieve from what I was dealing with at home. The studio itself is extremely clean, with basic amenities in the bathroom/shower. Think--deodorant, hair ties, tampons. They offer extra cold eucalyptus towels after class which is a refreshing touch (passed out to each rider using tongs as you cool down post-ride). On my first check in, I was pretty intimidated because I had no idea what I was doing. Thankfully, I was attended to by a super friendly desk person. They gave me a lay of the land and made me feel welcome. They also helped me get set up on my bike because although I am an avid peloton user at home (WHAT'S UP PELOTON), these bikes don't have a screen to tell you cadence and resistance. For reference, these classes rely on number of turns to increase resistance and the beat of the music for cadence. Anyway back tot he experience! While in town I took full advantage of their intro special which is two weeks of unlimited rides for C$50. This was well worth it as I got into a practice of riding almost every day. Big shout out to Riley whom I believe is the owner, she always brought the energy EVERY.SINGLE.RIDE. Even on the last class I took with her, there were some sound difficulties and she dealt with the issue gracefully and pulled off the majority of the class with the mic. I always left her classes absolutely dripping in sweat and feeling like I gave the ride my absolute all. Her music range was wide from Bran Van 3000 ( day throwback), to Drake, and deep moody dance beats. Riley's arm workouts; whether with the towel or the weights were serious burners. I also really enjoyed riding with JWess, I rode his hot rides. Whew, I had no idea you could combine the humidity of a hot yoga class with a spin ride. JWess' rise style is challenging, energetic, and fun. This might sound cliché but the most advanced riders know what to do in order to have a safe, challenging, and enjoyable ride. Meaning no matter what level you're at, if the hand choreography is unfamiliar or uncomfortable for you, don't do them. If you can stand to add a turn to the right for increased tension, then add it.
