We came to Etobicoke for the wonderful Lakeshore Garden Tour and discovered this lovely cafe! Excellent choice of organic teas and yummy desserts. While waiting for my order at The Empanada Company, I saw Fair Grounds Cafe and it intrigued me. I decided to drop by a week later, as I was in the area to get more empanadas. I found parking right in front of the cafe. It's diagonal, pull-in street parking. I walked in. It's a push to get through the door. I was immediately greeted by a friendly, accommodating staff member. I wanted a hot chocolate and asked about the four different ounce sizes. He showed me all the paper white cups. I went with the second-largest size. I also asked that I get soy or some non-dairy beverage added to it. Done! I have a weakness for baked goods. This cafe has vegan options, including pumpkin vegan muffins during my visit. Everything looked so goods, from brownies, to cookies. I saw the large cookie jars staring at me. My gosh, each cookie is larger than the palm of my hand and I have big hands! I wanted a s'mores one so badly. You basically take the tongs, grab your cookie, and place it in a paper bag. I got my hot chocolate and cookie that came to $9. It's not cheap, but it's fair trade goods. I expect to pay slightly more. There is a draft in the cafe, so the merchant bill that I had ripped off the machine before getting my bill blew off the counter and onto the floor. I let the man know, which he appreciated. You can pay by cash, and debit and credit cards. I also provided a tip. As usual, it's up to you. It was a bit of a challenge with full hands to get out of the cafe when you need to pull on the door handle to get out. Luckily, I put my hot chocolate on the bar-like table, pulled the door open, used my foot to keep it open, grabbed my drink, and moved quickly through the door. Problem solved! The hot chocolate is dark chocolate. I happen to love it. If you are more of a milk hot chocolate lover, you might find the hot chocolate to be missing sugar and perhaps taste bitter. I loved it. There was probably more soy in my drink than there should have been, but it was perfect for my less sugary needs. The s'mores cookie is extremely yummy! OMG, if I lived in the neighbourhood, I would buy the jar of cookies every day. It was buttery, chocolatey, and marshmallowy (I know, not a word, but whatever) delicious. It paired nicely with my hot chocolate, as it had slightly more sugar. I would come back just for this cookie alone. There were plenty of seats to sit down. If you sit by the bar-like area with stools, you get a nice view of the area. People-watching is casual in this cafe. It has a nice vibe. You can get a number of fair-trade coffee varieties. I am personally not a coffee connoisseur, but I appreciated both the selection and the cause. I like this cafe. I'd come back to give the muffins and more drink items a taste the next time I'm here. Okay, so... this coffee shop definitely caters to a certain crowd of regulars. When we visited the place, it was full with mostly older men who were talking about their upcoming retirement; not that that's wrong, but we had a lot of staring eyes on us when we walked in, which felt really awkward. The barista was not that friendly and didn't really explain the options for the drinks very well. :( We ordered a tea, regular coffee, banana chocolate muffin, and vegan apple walnut bread. The drinks and food were average; nothing particularly special about it. The furniture (e.g. sofa seats) in the coffee shop are really beaten down and the comforter-ish seat I sat on had a rip kn the seat with the inside stuffing coming out. What made it worse was the parking situation. The parking in front of the coffee shop is not that easily accessible and hard to get out of. read more

If you can't find street parking, then there are some spot behind the cafe. We discovered it as we couldn't find parking. The place has plenty of seatings, with high ceiling. The washroom is in the basement past the kitchen where you can see where they bake their treats. I had a small organic coffee and a s'mores cookie. $4.50 includes taxes which is pretty good!! I was disappointed that the cookie was hard. I would have liked it a bit softer, chewier. The place is cool knowing you are getting quality food, however, I don't live in the neighbourhood to frequent often. read more

What a find! The frozen gluten free food is a staple for me during my 2 week visit to Toronto. The soups are beautifully seasoned, and we have tried the broccoli, the carrot, and the cauliflower! Fairgrounds Roastery Cafe for sure is cute, ethically correct, friendly, organic and any of those goody goody descriptions you can use to describe it would be appropriate. It is always a breath of fresh air to find independent coffee shop out of the downtown core.. and here Fairgrounds even roast their own coffee! Super Friendly barista with this big smile makes everyone feel so welcome. Cappuccino was not too bad, but I had better.. It tasted more like a latte..and with too much milk and foam. My friend's Matcha Latte for sure was packed with tons of antioxidants as it has so much undissolved matcha powder and it would really help him to cleanse out all the toxins in his body. (just close your eyes and drink up!) If you want freshly roasted coffee beans, Fairgrounds does carry quite a few different roast.. "Rich Bastard" which is one of their house blend dark roast does sounded interesting. There are also certified organic roasted beans from Indonesia, Africa and South America. BTW, the dry spaghetti at the counter are not snacks to go with your drinks.. they are used as stirrer. May I suggest Linguine may be a better choice? Good amount of seating, friendly staff, certified fair trade and organic products - located just east of Port Credit in the Long Branch/Lakeshore West neighbourhood, this place is a decent space to get your coffee fix, to do some work, or to meet up with a small group. WiFi is available (it's their phone number, written down by the stir sticks and napkins), windows are big, lots of natural light. First, parking. There's free parking in front of the shop for a maximum time of 1 hour. Second, the products. Lots of pastries to choose from, and a good amount of drinks on the menu. I ordered a latte and a banana chocolate chip muffin, both of which were just okay to me. The latte was super foamy, I could barely find the latte in the cup. The muffin was also just okay but a bit dry (it wasn't bad, but to be honest, Black Goat Cafe just down the street has better muffins, in my opinion, and also made in house). The winning point for me here is the space because they have a good amount of it (good spot to get some work done, read the paper, stop by after a morning run, or to meet up with friends), it has a great story (ethical, fair trade product choices), and staff are incredibly friendly. I'll definitely be back again to try something else on the menu that I'll hopefully enjoy more - overall, this a place I'd recommend, support, and come back to. read more

If you want good coffee you can find it some where else, the place is going down when it comes to product and it's very expensive. The pastries are in the fridge for days if not a week at a time and the sandwiches are not always dated. I had a grilled chicken wrap around the 1st of the new year and I was very ill for the next few days. The owner has been on his phone when customers have been waiting and I don't think he really knows what he's doing... by the way the coffee is $14-$16 for 1/2 lb and $26-$28 for 1lb (unless you get the new Columbia honey roast that is $28 for 1 lb and $48 for 2lbs...) In the end... not worth it, support other local places that put the effort in. It may be good once, but don't be fooled by the owner!!!! read more

Anyway, this is a cute lil' café right at the corner of Lakeshore/Browns Line. I guess the area's called Long Branch. And although it's an "up 'n coming" 'hood, a scary, ano-druggie lady did still ask me for change as I walked on Lakeshore, so please take note. A few things are nearby, including Woody's Burgers (haven't tried it) and an Empanada place. Back to Fairgrounds... There are less than a dozen tables, so if you're going there with a laptop, hopefully you'll find a spot! Obvi, free wifi. Barista was very friendly, chill guy. Caffeinated drinks are great and are sourced from organic, fair trade beans which they also sell in-store + roast nearby. Bakery items are from a bakery in the basement of café, so they shouldn't have mysterious ingredients like those at Starbucks. With places like this 'round, I wonder why people still support the expensive chains?? Tip #1: Ask for the cost if you're not sure. Barista almost charged me for foam, but I ordered an iced latté, so n/a. There were also some flavoured honey sticks right by the cash that I thought were free, nope $0.25/ea. Another customer in front of me also cancelled her order 'cause she was confused about the cost of beans. This local coffee shop should be your go to stop if you live in the area or are driving through. Forget Starbucks which is just a few blocks east. Their coffee is rich and full of flavour with a wide variety of options to satisfy your preferences. After my very first visit I stopped going to any other coffee shop in the area partly because of their baked goods. Their in house baked goods are awesome. Love their selection of yummy scones always pairs well with my coffee, large and crunchy with a soft center. Lots of seating inside and in the rear, walls decorated with art and plenty of reading material. WiFi is available. read more

Made a quick stop here yesterday with my boy after an appointment in the area. We are from both Mississauga and know nothing about the Long Branch area. But after my appointment we were on our way back home when we drove by this spot and did a Uturn to see what it was all about. We had not yet had coffee/tea or anything to eat for the morning so we were secretly hoping everything from this spot from the coffee to the pastries were going to be amazing. My boy ordered a regular latte and I ordered an iced latte made with coconut milk. He really enjoyed his latte. The coffee was really bold and really fresh. Was pretty good. As for my iced latte it was just ok. The coconut milk doesn't give it much of a flavour. I had to add some sugar water (they provide on the bar) to make it a bit sweeter for me. I should have gone with a hot beverage instead. We also ordered 2 muffins - 1 carrot and walnut and 1 apple-cranberry. Both muffins were super fresh and really good. The space inside is really great too. Probably enough seats for at least 15 people. Although we noticed they didn't have any seating outside. We were looking forward to sipping our coffees outside while eating our muffins. So instead we sat in our car with the windows down. Overall we were happy we stopped by to experience this coffee spot. We can't say we would go out of our way to come here but if ever we were in the area we would make an effort. read more

One of the best location to buy coffee in Toronto GTA. It has a variety of beans from all over the world. After 8 is the shop signature product. I'm writing this comment because I am touched how the shop take cares of their customers. I drove from Markham to the shop yesterday and bought the Ethiopian Yirgacheffe to try. For afternoon tea today, we used the French press and let it sit for 5 mins. However the taste didn't turn out as we wanted from the bag. I thought maybe French press wasn't the best method to brew for this roasted bean. I called the shop and told Kyle who picked up the phone. He told me I did everything right and perhaps Yirgacheffe wasn't my cup of coffee He asked for my preference taste that I enjoy, and I said I really liked "After 8" the shop signature product; nevertheless I want to try something different. He then told me he will figure something out and will give me a new bag. I said it is a long drive for me to go back from Markham and thanks. Then he said will personally deliver to my home to make sure I'm satisfied. Wow for a small coffee shop saying that to a customer that they didn't know. I'm totally touched & surprised as well! No way for any other coffee shop that I know will do this for me! I totally feel like I'm their VIP but I'm no body just a customer who walked into their store. I felt so much respect as a customer. I spontaneously visited this coffee shop, because it was near by the laundry I needed to use. Although, there were a lot of other coffee shops options to use instead, I preferred this one, due to the fact that it was the closest one and had wi fi. The interior is very ordinary: small tables, chairs, a couple of sofas and a bar side. There is an access to free wi fi and plugs in case you need to charge a cell or a PC. In terms of beverages and food, there are several pastry options and a list of organic coffee hot/cold drinks. I tried coffee Americano, added a lil but of honey and milk. As a coffee addicted person, who have tried almost every coffee shop in the city, I may say that this one was one of the best I had. The taste of coffee is so mild, but at the same time saturated and leave amazing aftertaste. Although, I don't use this laundry very often, I will definitely find another occasion to come back to this coffee place again. read more

I can't say enough about their great coffee! I sought this gem out after my vacation to Costa Rica a few years ago. I haven't gone anywhere since. I love their range of fresh coffee beans; roasted in small batches, and conveniently sold by the half pound; with a discount applied when you buy a pound of coffee (or two half pounds.) Their Ethiopian Sidamo, Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, and Harar are each a unique cupped experience with wonderful floral notes, balanced flavour, and sweetness on the finish. Their medium roasts are smooth and balanced. Be sure to try their signature blend: 'Middle Man;' it's my go-to. If you like it dark, Rich Ba$tard and Sumatra are stand-outs. You can't go wrong with their decaf offerings either. I love their Cascadia and After-Eight Swiss Water Decaf. The owner, Jeff Stinson, is a great, friendly guy; so is Misha, their other full-time roaster. Jeff is doing his part to make a positive impact on the planet and help the coffee plantation farmers - selecting only organically certified coffee beans; buying directly from the farms and paying growers fair wages for their incredible beans. The prices just went up a bit, but it's still worth it if coffee is your passion and indulgence. Bring in your own travel mug and you get a significant discount. If you're ever in South Mississauga, check out their roastery location on Ogden Road by the train tracks. But check their hours. Nothing worse when you low on caffein craving good coffee and not getting one. Ordered cortado that ended up being espresso shot with some milk in it. Not creamy not foamy nothing cortado-like. Would have never known this place existed if I wasn't already going to T.O. Cycle and happened by. This establishment specializes in organic Free-Trade coffee as well as various organic treats like muffins and scones. They roast on site and have a variety of coffees for sale for home brew by the 1/2 or full pound. If your looking for a fresh cup on the spot they offer coffee prepared by common drip, French Press and Vac-Pot. Unfortunately the gal they just hired and was working her first shift as I arrived was not trained to use a French-Press or Vac-Pot. She also seemed unaware where the brewed "coffee of the day" was. Hopefully by the time you read this they'll have a properly trained staff member there to assist you when you drop by. Thumbs up on the coffee. Comparable quality to places that fresh roast on site like Moonbean Cafe. I also had a pumpkin muffin along with my beverage which was moist and delicious. Prices are inline with Starbucks but of course you're getting something organic (though "organic" I've been told is loosely defined these days). The establishment is small and cozy with high ceilings and about 4 small tables with accompanying chairs if memory serves me correctly. I have visited this place since it opened and can tell you that the coffee is absolutely superb! The flavor is so full and rich coupled with a smoothness that is unparalleled. I also have enjoyed the baked goods with much delight. The muffins were fresh, moist and tasty with many flavors to choose from. I enjoy the atmosphere as it is very relaxed and welcoming. Was happy to see this place open up in the neighbourghood. Swung by to get some beverages for the road when travelling and both myself and my boyfriend were pleased with the selection. He ordered an iced coffee and enjoyed it. I had the London Fog. They have a great selection of organic coffees, and their coffee of the day usually comes with a description, which I found interesting. They also had a wonderful selection of baked goods. I'm dying to go back and try their raspberry and white chocolate scone. Atmosphere was cozy. Pretty small area, by has seating inside if you want to stay in and if you're looking to head out, all of their cups and lids are 100% biodegradable. This is a really nice independent coffee shop with fair trade and organic coffee. I'm pretty sure they started as just a farmer's market stand and now have the store due to the success. There is a really good selection, and they are considerate right down to the details - even the sugar/milk/cream are 'organic' and they use recycled everything (to the point of offering washable metal spoons). The music is always great, but if you don't come at the right time of day you'll never find a seat. Expect to pay around the same prices as Starbucks but you'll feel like you have way more choices. read more

Ive had their in-house brewed coffee once which was great, but i did pick up a pound of beans to make at home on two occasions. Unfortunately, they didnt stack up. Perhaps they are a bit old as it seems they pre-package them and leave on various counters to take home or they use different source of beans for their own brewing, either way you can find better beans at No Frills if thats what you re looking for. read more

I would recommend that if you are staying in you order the small vs the medium as the ceramic cups are virtually the same size. No wonder many Long Branch residents consider Fair Grounds an oasis in the desert! It's the only independently-owned, good quality fair-trade cafe on Lakeshore Blvd/Rd within about two km (as far as I know; if anyone knows of something I've missed, please speak up!) Step inside, and if your nose doesn't start to twitch in anticipation, you're not a true coffee lover. Bags of coffee line the windowsills, the espresso machine hisses powerfully, and aaahhh! the aroma! A tempting selection of baked goods includes several varieties of sweet squares. Muffins are moist and flavourful, on the healthy side and not too sweet. Don't miss the blueberry scones - just the right combination of crunchy outside and soft crumbly inside, with a melt-in-your mouth butter flavour complemented by bursts of tangy blueberries. Breakfast sandwiches, a variety of teas, and juices are also offered. And you can buy day-old muffins at a discount - they are still fresh. In winter it's very cosy when the snow is blowing outside. They have a selection of books for adults and kids in case you didn't bring anything. In summer they set out a couple of patio tables in the back, and you'll often see a few cyclists, taking a break from zooming along Lakeshore. A charming addition to the gradual gentrification of Lakeshore near Marie Curtis park there and an excellent reason to get off the 501 streetcar a few stops early if you're heading West into Mississauga! There's something inherently validating about being able to buy a cup of coffee that you know has been produced in a conscientious manner and all of their blends are sharp and unique. It is of course slightly costlier than the average cup of mud, but the 25-50 cents extra it costs is more than justified knowing it's both supporting both the hard-working coffee growers and a local entrepreneur. I haven't tried anything from their bakery as I don't have a sweet-tooth to speak of, but based upon the charm, the service, and the higher-minded nature of the enterprise, I'd definitely recommend giving it a shot as well!
