I had the fortunate opportunity of being invited to this 'inner city' Church a few months ago by a…read moredear friend of many years. I must say upon browsing the local worship houses on YELP! I was really shocked that no one has taken the time to write a review on this one. I found The Redeemer Presbyterian Church to be one of the most, if not THE MOST, inspiring church I've even been inside of. To begin with, let me say that the space this Cathedral occupies is nothing short of Regal Elegance, although an 'inner city' vibe can be felt from the moment you walk through it's overstated antiquated heavy wooden doors, with welcoming pots of piping hot coffee or water waiting in the entrance lobby , ( tea bags are provided for non coffee drinkers) and all the extras, as you move to the sanctuary, you can hear that the live music the band is playing is decidedly contemporary gospel, and the message from the pastor, a thirty something gentleman, who right away commands your attention with his engaging delivery, not directly from scripture, although scripture is referred to, his is more of a modern day message, call it a 'revised' version, creatively shaped into fitting directly into your own life. The message to consider is clearly that of self reflection and acceptance of others, as opposed to the normal and expected mission of repentance or damnation and judgment of others, which, in my experience of over 35 years in and out if a variety of 'organized religious affiliations', and being raised from a Southern Baptist standpoint has taken me, this church actually appears to be living 'in the moment ' and content with the message they are sending. So Am I. I think it's working for them and hope they keep doing what they're doing. This church comes across as sincere, genuine, working hard and hard working, striking me as honest, without being hung up on old stagnant 'hellfire and brimstone' scare tactics. Redeemer is a breath of fresh air with motivational purpose sprinkled with a testimony here and there that will move you to tears. There is a wide variety of age, race, and social class present and to be honest I have never been anyplace where I have seen so many men holding and tending to infants! The congregation is upbeat, friendly, and INVOLVED, not only in the workings of the church and those who occupy it's services but in the 'inner workings' of the city, particularly the notably improving but still impoverished Fountain Square District. However, that is not to say this church is not doing what is needed to get their message out. There seem to be more than a few 'events' spattering our city to take part in if someone were to want to join in and get to work. I fell in love with this Grand Old Church and even an affinity with the people in it. There is also a complete Art Gallery on it's lower level that is just begging to be pondered over featuring gorgeous works by local talent. If you want Bible Study there seems to be quite a few that reach out to certain age, social or other academic arena that compels the word of God as well as an online magazine with Daily Bible verses for contemplation and memorization to impress your friends with at Bible Study. As if all this weren't enough there is an extraordinary 'children's church' that my 8 year old granddaughter just can't wait to go back to participate in. All in All I feel this is a very unique and worthwhile place to worship with a prominent focus on present day life and how Gods love and only Gods love can heal our broken spirits and tattered souls and transcend us to be worthy in his name, ever acknowledging the sinner in us all as being the most important aspect, after Gods love, as we are in our mortal state, fully fallible. Yet reinforcing that often times we are at our worst when we need salvation the most. So, all that being said, I am still awe stricken by the palatial beauty of this place. Indeed The Redeemer is a sight to behold. It is the kind of place that to me, a church SHOULD be, in every way.. In fact, it brings to mind something my mother would always say when I would ask her for guidance in the darker times of my own life.. Truthfully I am not much of a church goer and I do not belong to this church. However, this is a…read morebeautiful church. Not only from the outside, but I want to make sure that everyone knows how involved they are in their community. And that makes them and their congregation beautiful. Letting our group temporarily practice in their basement hall is very much appreciated. Many churches wouldn't allow such a thing. So kudos to this church being so helpful. Also there is a large parking lot attached, making it easier since this area is a bit congested. Just be aware that it is a one way parking lot. One way in, one way out.

I had the opportunity to attend a Maundy Thursday service at Crooked Creek Baptist Church just…read moresouth of Kessler on North Michigan Road on Indy's Northwestside this evening. It was a joint service with two other nearby churches - Witherspoon Presbyterian and First Mennonite. Crooked Creek is an American Baptist Church, which places it on the progressive end of the Baptist denomination. Crooked Creek just celebrated their 180th anniversary in 2017, though I'm not sure how long they've been at their current location. The building is a rather large church with an education week that I believe is mostly used by a pre-school. The church itself is definitely older - an initial clue that there's going to be some accessibility concerns. A couple things to note immediately in terms of accessibility. For entrance into the sanctuary, you'll want to park in the church's South parking lot and enter the closest door. There's a lift that will take you up one floor into a hallway that leads to the sanctuary. The sanctuary itself has a couple places where the pews have been shortened to allow for wheelchair seating, though the altar area itself is not wheelchair accessible. However, if there's an activity in the basement/dining room styled space then you'll actually have to go around to a different entrance in the back of the building that leads directly into it. So yeah, quite honestly, as much as I enjoyed my time here the chances I'd ever join are slim. The pastor is Mark Pittman. From what I was told, it's a modest-sized congregation of about 50 on Sundays. Tonight's service definitely had a nicer crowd, but you could sure tell the distinct personalities of the three congregations. Crooked Creek definitely skews older, WAY older, and has several retired ministers in its membership. They seem to have a pretty decent sound system. I was also very impressed with the lift - it's a simple, fundamental one but it works and people knew how to use it. There was no fumbling around trying to figure it out - I was helped by one of the very few youths in the congregation and he knew exactly what to do. They did hold a light meal after the service and I got a nice chance to meet many folks. They were a warm, hospitable group and quite funny. My friend, who is LGBT, hasn't joined the congregation but feels accepted there and participates in their choir. The music seems to lean toward more traditional hymns, though given this is Holy Week I doubt I received a true vibe for the regular services. The pastor was a good speaker. He was warm and passionate. While he didn't speak disability inclusive language, the bulletin does include "Stand, as you are able." There was a warm intimacy to the sanctuary. It was dimly lit, lots of wood, and stained glass giving it a sense of isolation despite being in a relatively busy neighborhood. It is definitely an older sanctuary, but it works well for the congregation. The pews are wooden. The accessibility issues alone would likely keep me from ever considering membership, though there was a definite community feeling and it would be a wonderful option for someone older in the area who held somewhat more progressive views. The ability to do stairs would definitely help, though with some extra work you can get into both the sanctuary and the dining area. Ordinarily, I'd probably go 3-stars here based on accessibility issues and my pet peeve of not including disability inclusive language. However, disability inclusive language is a fairly new concept and with the majority of people here quite a bit older it's not particularly surprising and their warmth, hospitality, humor, and embrace of my friend will allow me to move this up to 4 stars.

I was met at the door by one of the pastors who walked me down to check in my kids for the first time. My kids were so excited to be at church in the movie theater and kept telling me they were going to watch a movie. I tried to let them down gently that they wouldn't be watching movies on the screen but when they walked into their classroom I was proven wrong. My littles were overjoyed that a projector was pointed toward the screen for their morning curriculum to play. Also to note: they got printed out name tags for security - I always like that! After drop off, I walked into theater 9 where adult service was held. Their music equipment was set up on the floor in front of the seats and the back half of the theater was blocked off with curtains to give the theater a smaller feel. Very comfortable. The music quality was great, and the message was relevant and well delivered. If you're in the Plainfield area, I'd recommend it!
