This hotel was a fantastic stay for my husband and I. The hotel grounds are beautiful - the landscaping is lovely overlooking the sea and the hotel itself is a site to be seen. The staff was extremely kind and the service was great. Our room itself was huge, updated and clean. The bathrooms in the room were so nice - loved the tile details and the rain shower. The amenities available ie gym, spa, bar etc were a great added bonus. Loved the huge breakfast bar that was included with the stay. I would highly suggest staying here for your visit to St Andrews!

The golf course is outside the window overlooking the water. Beautiful views from the rooms which are exquisite.

This hotel was amazing! We had an event for work here and the rooms were spectacular, very clean, the beds were like heaven! The golf course was just out the window and the view was breathtaking. The bathtub was over sized and deep and so relaxing. The staff were all very attentive and kind. The food was not my favorite, mostly bland and lacking flavor but that could be the Scottish traditional fare. Overall, I would recommend this hotel, it's a bit of a drive to town so it is not in walking distance.

I was lucky enough to be attending a conference at the Fairmont St Andrews recently and stayed here for two nights. It's in an amazing location on the beach and is a really lovely place for a getaway (even if that getaway is for work!). I arrived and was warmly greeted with a quick and easy check-in. My room looked over the golf course and water and was really large and spacious. The bathroom had a separate bath from the shower and was well appointed with products. The mini bar had Innis & Gunn beers and the hotel really seemed to be intent on showcasing local products like beers from St Andrews. As part of the conference I was at, we visited the Clubhouse restaurant (about a 10 minute walk from the main building, or they'll have a shuttle bus if it's raining) as well as trying the buffet food for the event which was all of a really high standard and delicious. I had some free time one of the afternoons so sat in the bar for a drink and a cheeseboard which was delicious, and great value at £8 with really large pieces of cheese. At a place like this, you kind of expect them to charge the earth for that kind of thing so I was really impressed at the value (and taste!). I only have a few negative points: - the wifi isn't great. Maybe if I was here for a romantic weekend, I wouldn't care. I was there for a digital marketing conference though so wifi was essential! It wasn't good enough for streaming and video calls would drop out frequently. I needed to get some work done and uploading photos took way longer than I'd expect in 2016 at this kind of hotel. - The pillows are really hard. I tried every pillow in my room and they all felt a bit like they had a rock in them. I should've requested new ones but forgot. Apart from that, the bed was just perfect. - Some of the bar staff were a little grouchy but I have to say they were the exception rather than the rule and most of the staff at the hotel were lovely. None of these add up to enough for me to remove a star so it's still a 5 star experience for me. While St Andrews is quite the drive from Glasgow (2 hours), it was so nice to have some time on the other coast and enjoy the beautiful location.

The car GPS took us behind the building and we had to walk around. We had a huge lunch so we weren't too hungry by the time our reservation came but we had amazing appetizers and some of the best drinks of our Scotland trip. The servers were great even though we didn't end up wanting main courses and just kept ordering drinks.

Service was good. We had a server who had just graduated from the University of St. Andrews. She was friendly and welcoming which was a nice change having just spent 2 nights in Edinburg. The wine list was not very impressive and my date ended up ordering a bottle of wine that resembled Capri-sun. I couldn't even drink it. We started with the oyster pair (HUGE oysters, very creamy), deer tartare - couldn't get through one bite of it and Pig's Head on Toast. Appetizers were not a good sign for the rest of the dinner. However the tomahawk steak was pretty good, lobster was overcooked. Soufflé was pretty good. Would give it a higher rating if not for the food. I think you really come here for the views, the putting green overlooking the 18th on the balcony, some gorgeous views vs. the food.

No, I haven't gone to that great big supper club in the sky. Rather, I have been on a golfing trip to Scotland with my son. Every father's dream is to share a passion with his son. To spend 7 days together with just Brian and myself was a rare treat. To get to play 10 rounds of golf together with him at the home of golf was...PRICELESS. We had a blast We played 10 rounds of golf on 9 courses in 7 days walking 92 miles in the process of playing (Please note that in golf, the shortest distance between two points isn't always a straight line.) Prestwick North Berwick Muirfield Kingsbarn Old Course Carnoustie Lundin Links Crail New Course Old Course If you tell someone that you went to play golf in Scotland, the first thing they ask is: Did you get to play the Old Course? The Old is truly the home of golf. It is where Old Tom Morris shaped the game and the real champions of the game from Bobby Jones to Tiger Woods have proven their merit by winning the Open Championship. But, it isn't easy to get a tee time to play it. I am lucky enough to have played it years ago. When I was planning the trip I went to great lengths to make sure that my son had the same experience. Back in the 1990's I was in London on business. My boss and I planned a weekend trip to St. Andrews for a round of golf at the Old Course. A friend said he knew the Captain at the Royal and Ancient Golf Club that could get us on. We kept asking and asking but our friend was unable to come up with a coveted tee time. Three days before we were leaving London we told a Sri Lankan friend about our quandary. He knew somebody that knew somebody and we placed our hopes in him. When we arrived at the hotel at St Andrews we got the news that we had a 9 am tee time in the morning at the Old Course. I was like a kid at Christmas. So as we planned the trip with my son, I tried everything I could to replicate the experience. We entered the "Ballot" a lottery for tee times where they offer random tee times to the thousands of golf pilgrims that show up on St Andrews shores to play The Old. I even tried to stay in the same hotel as I did in 1995 to bring us good luck. Unfortunately when we got to the hotel we found out that we were not one of the lucky ones. Michael at the Russel Hotel was great. He told us about the "Dark Times" and how to improve your chances. To be honest we went to bed that first night thinking our chances of playing the Old Course were very slim. The following morning I reconfigured all our plans and at 6 am headed to the Old Course. I found 15 guys that had been sleeping there all night to get their names on a list to fill in for cancelations. A sorry group to say the least. The list also makes you eligible to be given a "Dark Time" which is a tee time between 1:30 and 2:30 pm. Starting times so late that you most likely will finish that last few holes in the "Dark". Brian and I went off and played Kingsbarn another great course outside of town. Late in the round I said to Brian lets go back to the Old Course and see if we can get a "Dark Time". Sure enough we did. It was the beautiful weather of the trip. The sun was shining and the golf gods were gracious as father and son got to play those fabulous links together. As fate would have it, on our last day we got lucky again and played the Old Course second time. This time, Brian who had been playing well all week had the round of his life. He birdied two holes on the back 9 with the most impressive on the iconic par 5 14th. He crushed his second shot over the dreaded "He'll Bunker" and got it up and down for a sweet birdie 4. An amazing close to a glorious week. More than golf it was a special time for father and son. In planning the trip I recalled to Brian how I had played golf with my dad at Pebble Beach in California and on the day he died that is what we talked about. To which Brian replied: Dad you aren't dying on me our you? I certainly plan to be around for awhile, but my guess is that when my time comes I will remember the magical week with my son in Scotland.

I just returned from a November visit to this resort. I read before my trip some negative reviews…read moreon some other review sites, so I want to provide a different perspective. I majority of the reviews I read about this resort concerned the drafty cottages and the cost of electricity. Obviously November gave us our share of cold weather, and I am happy to say that our cottage was very comfortable. The cottage was freezing when we arrived, but the staff member who showed us around showed us where the radiators were and how to control them as well as providing advice on running them economically. The unit heated up very quickly. The extra cost for electricity at the end of the week was about £50 which was much less than the amounts suggested by other reviewers. We ate at the cottage at least 1 cooked meal per day and kept the cottage comfortably warm. The furniture and layout of the cottage was very nice and provides good accommodation for up to 3 couples. We only ate at the Linsey room 1 night but the experience was very good and I will enjoy memories of that evening for a long time to come. When we made reservations for the meal we were told that we would be seated at a table with other people. When we got there it was a banquet table with about 25 others. The atmosphere was good and we were encouraged to meet other guests. The food was good and then to our surprise an entertainer showed up. The person was a very good singer, singing traditional Scottish tunes as well as being quite the comedian. I may not have signed up for this event if I had known all that was involved, but I can tell you that I thoroughly enjoyed it. Over all this resort was wonderful, and provided us with an extremely relaxing holiday. If I could change anything I would ask that the resort provide a few condiments in the kitchen. Overall I highly recommend this resort.
