Before my oldest daughter started kindergarten, we were still living within the Cincinnati Public Schools District. Seeing as that school system is beyond helpless and ineffectual, we knew that we needed to get our daughter in one of the outlying school systems bordering the city's limits. Batavia had high marks from the state Department of Education, so this was a huge motivator in our decision to move here. Not one minute have we regretted it. BES has a phenomenal staff. The teachers, lunch workers, administrators, secretarial staff, custodians, and everybody else, are committed to doing the utmost best for the students. There's a genuine care for these kids that you will not find in big city school. They encourage (and expect) the parents to be active participants in their children's education. They are supportive, but not adverse to discipline when needed. I cannot say enough good things about my kids' teachers. Our oldest daughter had issues with her speech that everyone who came into contact with her realized. However, the state of Ohio refused to allow her into speech therapy because these is a policy that students can only get help if their "disability" (in this case my daughter's speech) was having an adverse effect on their development. The problem here was my daughter kept scoring well above average on everything, and so the state said her academic development was progressing just fine, and there was no need for her to participate in speech therapy. This did not satisfy either her teacher or principle. They continuously brought her case before the school board and the state. One day, our daughter got in trouble on the bus. The bus driver informed us that she had heard our daughter use the "N"-word repeatedly on the ride home. My wife and I were shocked. We have never used that word in our household and would never tolerate its use by our children. When we confronted our daughter she was extremely upset. She did not understand why the bus driver had yelled at her and gotten her in trouble. When we told her to tell us what word she had used we were shocked to hear her say that despicable word. She kept repeating it over and over, and finally started pointing to her feet as she said it. It was then that we realized she had been saying the word "sneaker." Due to her speech impediment, it sounded exactly like the "N'-word. We informed her teacher of this, who then immediately brought it to the school principle. Her argument was that even though our daughter's speech was not affecting her academic development, it was already beginning to affect her social development. And because of that, it was the state's responsibility to place our daughter in speech therapy. It worked. Two weeks later we were drafting up our daughter's Individual Education Plan. This is just one example of how wonderful BES is. Our kids have gotten the best teachers. Our children are learning so much, and loving every minute of it. Terrible school. The school resource officer has been grooming my granddaughter. She was meeting…read morewith my granddaughter daily & buying her toys. We had already told them we did not have any needs & my granddaughte had plenty of toys & to not send anything home. Finally, we went to the school & told the resource officer directly to leave my granddaughter alone. What they did next was highly unethical, they said they talked to me about my granddaughters absences, which was a lie. I never spoke with them. They told my daughter that my granddaughter was out of parent notes & if she missed anymore, there would be truancy charges. Do you know how hard it is to watch your granddaughter get physically sick over being stalked by the resource officer? Every chance the resource officer got to be alone with her, she did. After we make a complaint over it, the school filed truancy charges, I call this retaliation. I heard he secretary tell my daughter (IF) she (my granddaughter) missed again, they would report her for truancy. Then they added notes that they couldn't get a hold of us & added pages & pages of notes. I noticed the notes were from when my daughter was a child back in 2009 & they added that as evidence to my granddaughter being truant. Ironically, my daughter was a victim of Yealey & the notes go back to when I had filed a OCR complaint. Did you know that Yealey had employed a counselor who was married to a pedofile who assaumotes kids my daughter's age at that time? Now the school is grooming my granddaughter & lying in school documents in order to look innocent. I am seeking legal advice & I will take legal action. I would love to give full details on this situation to our local news & if anyone else has had a bad experience, please reach out & maybe we can start a class action lawsuit against this unethical & unacceptable retaliation & unjust treatment & behavior.

When we toured the…read morebuilding, we could tell it was a little run down, but the staff seemed positive and they told us she would be in a classroom environment and that the children were separated by age groups. On her first day, when my girlfriend went to pick her up, no one knew where she was. My girlfriend asked to speak to her teacher, and was informed that the teachers leave at 3pm and that from then on, the children are left with school-age teen girls, one of which in another classroom (5 year olds) yelling at a child to "put that down NOW". My girlfriend finally had to go out to the playground to locate our daughter, and found her in the play-structure, with kids that were older than her, not separated by age as we were told, not able to get down, scared and asking for help down. No one on staff knew where her change of clothes or back-pack were. When I left work to go and speak to the owner, he had conveniently just left, even though my girlfriend had spoken with him 20 minutes before then and told him I was on my way down. When I spoke with the director, she told me that "There were a few different stories about what happened." That's not something you want to hear as a parent who just put their child into daycare for the first time and has a first day like that. She tried telling me the "girls" had said that my daughter was on the playground and having a good time. I later learned that the other kids were hitting and kicking her trying to get her to get off the play structure. When we got her home, she started eating all the food in the house that she could find and eating like she hadn't been fed. Later that night, she was so upset and crying that she almost threw up. I know my daughter, and I know when something really bothers her. We were worried about the quality of care she received from this place IN JUST ONE DAY! Parent to parent, I would not waist the time it takes to pick up the phone and call these people. I even came in the day after to speak with the owner and get our money back, and again the owner wasn't there, or at least wouldn't talk to me. After asking some people at work, I found out that the owner has a reputation for ripping people off and not being on the level. Just wanted to share my experience.

The district also has no regard for their safety which shows quite evident when it takes -4 degree weather and -20 degree wind chill to call it when weeks before the weather was quite similar and the student parking lot laid covered in ice while the staff lot was dry. Grades K-3 are admitted by application and grades 4 and up must also audition for admission. Pupils outside of the Cincinnati Public Schools system can attend for a tuition fee; those inside county can attend for free. The school has three large performance venues: - The Corbett Theater (seats 750) - The Mayerson Theater (seats 300) - The Black Box Theater (seats 130) The Corbett Theater stage has high ceilings which allow for "flying" actors, as well as an orchestra pit that sinks down to another level of the building! In addition to the stage, SCPA has courses in their scenery and prop room. Students create and build about 95% of the stage. The convenient location of the stage shop allows them to move scenery on and off the stage with ease. The art and dance rooms have a wall of windows which overlook 12th Street, Music Hall and Washington Park. Equipped with six dance studios, students can rehearse in this studio knowing their show can be replicated, step for step, in the Corbett Theater, as the two venues are identical in size. Many of the studios are heavily insulated so that loud classes will not disturb another. The school building has a very modern design with industrial elements and bright colors. Massive pieces of student artwork hang in the hallways. My favorite detail about the school is their students: they appeared happy and focused. In contrast to other public schools, all of the SCPA pupils were dressed nicely for class with combed hair; no one was wearing pajamas.
