I've been searching for some smaller pieces for my downsized abode and haven't been too enamored of one store, yet. That may change now that I've seen what Streets of London has available. SLA carries some beautiful Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian, and early American furniture, some with the most exquisite carvings. They truly are works of art. There was a mirrored Victorian organ, a French mirrored armoire, and a 1940s era silk embroidered sofa, that I could not stop staring at. And for the sofa, I know I'd be sitting on the floor in front of it, admiring the detailing; probably defeating the purpose of having something that nice. There isn't just furniture here, either. For whatever period, there's art, lithographs, bed frames -- brass and wood, glass punch bowls, silver tureens, china, and tea services. One silver tea service was the type with the pot on a hinged device where it could be tipped for pouring without having to be picked up. That was the first time I've seen one of those up close. Although I was completely stunned at how many gorgeous pieces I saw, most of them were far too big for my available space. That's where the owner, Gill, came to my rescue. She told me the smaller pieces were always the first to be sold, but she was expecting another shipment later this year. As she's trying to sell down her inventory in advance of the new shipment, she tempted me sorely by telling me she may be willing to deal on some of the existing inventory. I now have a reason to go back besides just for a visual treat in the genre of wood. Until then, if there's any way I can make that organ or sofa fit . . . where did I put that measuring tape and yardstick. . . .

I probably attend at…read moreleast a couple of sales every week, so I've got a broad array of experiences from which to contextualize. Leland Little is a great spot. This isn't Christie's or Sotheby's, but I'm not sure we'd have a market for that in this part of North Carolina. But there *is* a lot of money here, and a surprising abundance of really high quality second hand goods, and I can see why Leland Little gets his fair share of them through his auction house. The catalogues are very well produced, with top-notch photography. The auction house itself has comfortable chairs and plenty of space in which to walk around and peruse the goods. The free hors d'oeuvres and cupcakes were a nice touch. Perhaps the biggest problem I had was the poor cellular reception I got inside the building ... but that's hardly their fault. The staff were friendly and professional and set me up with a bidding number as quickly as one could hope for. When I wanted to examine something in a case, it wasn't hard to find a staffer to offer a lending hand. Absolutely no complaints there. Another reviewer bemoaned the cost of the goods being auctioned. If your basis of comparison is Etsy and eBay, then you're probably in the wrong place. The clientele at Leland Little appeared to me to be a little more discerning, and i can entirely understand why these policies exist. Absentee bids cost a company money to process, and it's entirely normal to have minimum bid amounts. If you don't like that, then you're not going to like a lot of the higher end auction houses out there.

Do not trust Leland Little with your high-value items. They took a rare 1999 Kweichow Moutai and…read morelet it go for $475--a fraction of its true secondary market value. Instead of properly evaluating the piece or marketing it to serious collectors who actually understand vintage spirits, they dumped it in a low-visibility listing just to clear the lot. It feels like an absolute scam for sellers. If you want your items sold for pennies on the dollar while they take their commission, go ahead. Otherwise, run. I would have rather dumped it out in the streets then to get ripped off the way I did.

Honestly I wish I had done more research before signing a contract with Mr. Morgan. If I had, I…read morewould have seen the yelp reviews, the BBB rating, which at the time of writing this is an "F", the lawsuits, and the articles in the newspaper. Nevertheless, a contract was signed for an estate sale on June 6 - 8. Pros: Mr. Morgan and his staff did an amazing job of pricing items and organizing items throughout the house. I do have cameras in and outside of my house (which they were aware of) and did not see anything that raised any concerns. He did tell us that we didn't need to be there during the sale but we opted to be there. During the sale, there were a couple of additional people who walked around the house to make sure no one was taking anything and not going into places they shouldn't have. Cons: Here's where I wish I had done more research. Our contract stated that we would be paid within 25 business days of the close of the sale. Which would have made it July 7 (July 4 being a Holiday). I did reach out to him the week before to ensure that there was nothing that he needed from us and he told me that he expected to pay us early. I heard from him a couple of times during the week and there were several more promises to pay but nothing. He then told us a story that there was an issue with the sale before us which resulted in him using our money to pay them but kept promising that we would get out money, he just needed a little more time. We received some of the money later that week. We finally received the last of our money on July 20 but there were many promises about paying and then constant issues with either his phone or the credit card or something else. I filed a complaint with the Attorney General's Office. All this being said, we did get our money eventually but it wasn't without daily text messages and a lot of stress/headaches.
