Outrigger canoeing at Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, Hawaii... My friend in Virginia asked me to be the photographer for their Girl Scouts outing on 6-25-24. Sure! This paddling team has won competitions at various Canoe Regattas on the East Coast. My friend is the coach. She has them train regularly - I know that they are competent, but they haven't paddled in the open ocean - just in lakes and streams! What an awesome opportunity for these young women, right? My friend booked online with Faith Surf School because they had the best rates. We parked for free on Kalakaua Avenue by The Waikiki Aquarium and walked about 20 minutes to the Outrigger Hotel. We found the bright orange outrigger canoe on the beach, then located the kiosk. The team had signed waivers online. They were asked to arrive 1 hour and 15 minutes before their scheduled appointment. The coach assembled the paddlers. After the briefing, our team of five plus 2 employees pushed the canoe from the sand to the water. Everyone jumped in and paddled smoothly! The gals had a great time - even though it was a ten minute ride. Everyone had a wonderful experience! Thanks to Faith Surf School for a memorable adventure! read more

The good was the experience itself - we loved canoe surfing! Unfortunately we booked a 30 minute session, which only lasted about 20 minutes. Could have at least gotten one more, maybe two more waves in but the conductor seemed more interested in talking to a fellow tour guide who was on a jet ski for five mins. We also got a call a week before our excursion, saying they could not accommodate the date we booked and had to move it to the following day. Fun experience overall, but try booking with one of the other companies if they're available. read more

They have a variety of boards to choose from and offer expert recommendations and insight. Their staff is very kind and helpful, and their surf lesson instructors are the best on the island. About as easy as it gets renting a surfboard on the beach. $20 for an hour (they don't sweat it if you stay out a little later), sign the usual waiver and you're in your way with either a traditional fiberglass or soft top longboard. The bathymetry off the shore of Duke's is sandy with a gradual slope - makes it great to learn and you'll find many other locals and tourists alike trying to get stoked on the waves in Waikiki. read more

However, the attendant was very nice to let my girls use the boards if they went over the hour allotted as it wasn't busy and the waves were just right. Our family had a great experience and felt like pros with the instructors from Faith! Highly recommend!

So we finally learned how to surf. Granted Waikiki is probably the best place to learn because the waves are small flat consistent and really not undulating or scary like most other beaches. We checked into the school next to the Waikiki out rigger hotel. We were assigned a gentleman named John John and he is a real pro in the true sense of the word. Extreme patience. Wonderful encouragement and a genuinely nice person. I believe we paid like $60 or something per person. Tip not included. I believe they call that a semi private lesson and I think we were out there for a couple of hours. I can't wait to go back and I know we will be asking for the same instructor. We were able to get up right away and we got up probably 95% of the time. This is the place to go to learn to surf and this is the go to school. Guarantee you'll have a great time. You need a little bit of balance and a little bit of endurance. They provide a shirt to avoid board rash. They have small boards and I used a paddleboard because I happen to be 6'3 and 240 pounds. After you're done there is a hose there with freshwater so you can rinse off. They do not provide lockers so don't bring anything. You cannot wear anything such as a phone around your neck. Probably for liability reasons. So you must bring someone who can stand on the shore and shoot your videos for you. One mistake we didn't think about. Aloha and Mahalo read more

My son had two private lessons (June 22 and June 24), one with Barney the other with Evan. Those two are phenomenal instructors, I'm not even exaggerating. They had my son catch and ride every wave he attempted (I was watching from our balcony at the Outrigger) he was so stoked at the end of each lesson. They also took great photos and videos for me. I would not look further than Faith Surf School if you want surfing lessons. Just hook up with them, you'll do amazing and you definitely won't regret it. read more

This is hands down the best place to rent a longboard. I have rented here on numerous occasions and the staff have always been extremely friendly and laid back. Their boards are in great shape versus other rental places, and they provide extra wax for your surf. I appreciated that they also don't count the minutes so that you feel pressured to get in by a certain time to avoid additional charge. This place is top notch! read more

This is my post card as a message in a bottle from Waikiki Beach. I just had one of the best days of my life. I went out surfing with Micah Moniz and Isaiah Moniz of the legendary Moniz Family Surf School. The Moniz Family are Hawaiian Surfing Royalty. The father of the clan Tony Moniz surfed Pipeline. Tammy is the mother of Micah and Isaiah two great surfers and Hawaii's finest surf instructors, Kelia a two-time surfing World Champion and Josh and Seth who are on the World Surfing Tour. There was no more beautiful feeling than being out at Canoes learning to surf with the Micah and Isaiah Moniz. They are fun and cool guys. Canoes is where they both were born and raised and learnt to surf. I never felt safer in my life. Canoes right in the middle of Waikiki Beach was the break that Duke Kahanamoku surfed. I was in paradise. This was Hawaii. It was a surreal day. The water was translucent under the brilliant blue sky, the waves were rolling but gentle with Diamond Head our witness. The voice of the Lord was over the waters. Under their graceful tutelage I managed to get up and surf a gorgeous wave all the way right. The inexpressible flow. Our family decided to try surfing for the first time. Lauren our Instructor helped us confidently get up on our very first try. All four of us. Everyone got up on the next two tries. Our family had a really great time and enjoyed every bit of the time we spent. As a result I think I'll begin surfing on much more regular basis. read more

Now I know why Waikiki surfers have such huge arms...it's from surfing the long waves and paddling ALLLLL the way back out! After some window shopping the various surf huts on the beach, my wife and I chose Faith Surf School for a group surf lesson. We were paired with Isaiah (who was awesome!) and one other surfer, so we had a nice small group. Isaiah gave us a quick 10-minute intro/demo on the sand and gave great feedback/correction when needed, then we were out into the water. We paddled far out to where the waves were crashing, and took turns catching waves with Isaiah gliding us into the crest of the wave for a near-perfect ride every time. This was our first time and each of us caught 5-6 stand-up rides apiece! It's also worth mentioning that once you're standing up, you're easily surfing for about 20-30 seconds per ride. I've been to a ton of beaches but have never seen anything like this! The only bummer is paddling all the way back, but it was definitely worth it. Given the time it took to paddle back out, and since Isaiah was sending us off one at a time, there was really no waiting/downtime. Once I got back out to the spot, it was my turn to ride again. The lesson itself was perfect, but I'm docking a star for the photography they tried to sell us afterwards. Some of the other surf shops had guys out in the water with GoPros taking closeups and video, but the guy shooting our photos was all the way out on shore (about 300+ feet away). He had about 30-40 shots for each of us, but it's apparently their policy to either sell all of the photos, or none of them...he wanted about $80 for the pics (nearly the cost of the lesson!). All we would have possibly wanted was 1-2, which would have taken him a couple of seconds to attach to an email, but at least we have some other pics we snagged before and after the exciting day! All in all, a great experience! Highly recommended, but bring your own camera out there with you! read more

My kids surfing lesson was scheduled to start at 11am. The instructor didn't show up until 11:20am. The class started at 11:30, and kids came back at 12:30pm, but we paid for a 80 minutes class. The instructor didn't take any pictures during the class when they suppose to. They were not honest with their instructing hours and didn't apology for a late start nor no pictures. My 11 yo son did a private lesson this week. Tony did a great job of working with my son and helping him feel confident in the water. We're from the mid-west US, so while my son is a proficient pool swimmer, he's not familiar with the ocean. I felt the lesson was a good value for the cost. We also ordered pictures! What a great experience surfing in Waikiki! I was a little hesitant about surfing in such a touristy location. I did not want my first time to end up with someone getting their head hit by my board, but this was the only free time I had to learn how to surf so I went for it. Our instructor was Kaulani (or something like that). After getting eaten up by the waves twice, I was too exhausted and scared to try to get up on the board again. I decided to give up, but Kaulani was determined to get me to surf a wave so he maneuvered me around the ocean by dragging my board (along with me on it) using his feet. The guy is crazy strong! I ended up surfing a few waves. Getting knocked down in the beginning was worth the surfing experience in the end. The most memorable part was the stunning view of diamond head. I sat there in between waves just taking the scenery in. To sum it up, don't let the fact that the lessons take place in a touristy location throw you off. The small waves, shallow blue waters, and beautiful scenery makes Waikiki the perfect spot for beginners to learn. read more

I had two days in Hawaii, first day the weather was garbage, but the next day was awesome. I decided I didn't want to spend 4 hours of my last day in Hawaii doing a surf lesson (the ones where they pick you up and drop you off at your hotel). Time is money on vacation, I'm in decent shape so I don't need a boat to take me to my surfing spot, and I wasn't embarassed practicing how to stand on the beach in front of random strangers). Anyway I've always wanted to try surfing and why not do it in Hawaii. I decided to do a private lesson as it wasn't much more, and I figured I'd learn much fast and hopefully catch more waves not having to share an instructor with 2-4 more people. I paid $130 for 1 hour of water time (you can pay more for more water time, but I'm glad with what I did, the paddling certainly zaps the energy out of you) and 30 minutes instruction on land. Actually it's more like 5-10 minutes check in time at HIC, a little bit of walking from the HIC store to their spot at the Sheraton, then about 10-15 minutes learning safety and basic surfing code, how to paddle, and of course stand on your board on land. Then you paddle out with your instructor to the surfing spot and attempt to start riding waves. My experience with Faith Surf School was AWESOME!!! My instructor Matt was just cool from start to finish. I apparently had good balance (whether it was from plyometric workouts I do and/or experience snowboarding) but I was able to stand up on my very first wave (and every wave after that). My wife was actually watching from the shore and said she could hear how psyched Matt was....I think he was even more psyched than I was that I was riding waves that quickly. I loved the entire experience. I also paid for the awesome photos after, roughly like $10 a photo or the entire CD for like $60+tax which to me was well worth it. Although most of the photos are of me fixing my rash guard or blowing my nose lol. So if you do decide to go, try to remember to make a cool face when you stand up and throw a shaka up ;). Oh Matt was definitely awesome because he helped pull me to certain areas so I could spend more energy surfing rather than paddling. So that's definitely cool. 5 stars to Faith Surf School, if you're looking for your first lesson to Surf in Waikiki, I'd definitely recommend going with Faith Surf School. Not to mention no wasted time leaving and coming back to Waikiki. read more

They're conveniently located, have a good variety of boards (compared to some places that just have 9ft long boards or only soft tops), and staff is super friendly. They always made conversation when I'd come every morning and after I'd surf, as well as remember my name. These things go a long way when there are lots of other businesses offering the same thing... good customer service keeps you coming back. Back in 2007 I took an amazing surf class in Honolulu, and to this day it's been one of my favorite memories with my family. My husband and I were planning a trip to Honolulu for our honeymoon and I was determined to find the same surf class I attended 11 years ago. After scouring the internet for a couple of hours I found it-- Faith Surf School. We were able to easily book an appointment online for Tuesday morning. We paid $65 for a group lesson, which is a deal based on the rates we saw from other lessons in Waikiki. All of their employees come from professional surfing backgrounds and are incredibly passionate about helping others learn and succeed. We had our class with Tony, a great instructor. He took out the complexity of the learning experience and make it very easy to follow. In fact, everyone in our class caught many waves and had a great time. We moved to Honolulu a few months ago so we asked some local surfers to recommend a surf class. This was their recommendation. I was nervous because I'm from a landlocked state, kind of scared of the ocean, a bit out of shape, and 40; I did not think surfing was for me, just wanted to try it once for the story. After the one class, I can't wait to buy a surfboard of my own and keep practicing! It was exhilarating! I fell off the board on my first attempt, but after a quick chat to correct my stance, I successfully rode the rest of the waves all the way in and got back down on the board without falling. I never thought I would do that even once, much less multiple times. The instructor was patient, knowledgeable, and very effective! Faith may cost a bit more than other surf schools, but it's worth paying a little more for expertise. read more
