Review for 9/11/24: All the guys there, Trevor ( I think that's his name) , Seth & Nate were super nice and helpful. Nate especially, took good care of me and even though I was super nervous, he calmed my fears initially by thoroughly going over steps to get on the board, where on the water we were headed because of the high tide and the do's and don'ts to get the most of my experience in a safe manner. Once we were on the water, he always made sure I was ok, encouraged me and made sure I was having fun. My son had the most amazing experience surfing today with Trevor. The scheduling was very easy (concierge booking at our hotel Halepuna). Today we asked to see if there was an earlier lesson at noon instead of 2pm and the team was super accommodating and so glad we did that because the waves got rough by 2pm! My 17 year old had a total blast out on the waves with Trevor. He felt safe and I knew he was in great hands. Trevor is an incredible instructor. I had two sessions with Aria and Trevor, respectively. Scheduling was super easy, the staffs were friendly and made sure I understood the follow-up details. Both Aria and Trevor provided valuable tips for surfing, but most importantly they demonstrated it is important to have fun while you are out there, falling into water while trying new things are part of the fun too. We had a wonderful experience & genuinely couldn't have asked for anything better! We were able to book 30 minutes before the lesson for a last minute experience at the end of our trip. Tommy did a great job with instructions and we both were surprised we were able to stand up as much as we did. It was also a nice surprise that Lindsay came out to take photos -- we are excited to show our friends! Overall we thought it was a great value and having the lesson be semi private really made a difference for us. It was an absolutely amazing experience! Trevor is truly awesome! He's a very good teacher and the way explained everything and made sure I understood was super helpful. I was able to stand up on my 3rd try! That I didn't even think I could do! I wish I had taken the photo package too, because I don't have any proof that I surfed!! At 9:30 in the morning, i booked surfing lessons for two 10 y/o and one 11 y/o for noon time. When arrived at the beach, the instructor decided not to take kids on lessons because they were under 13 y/o and the current was bad. Office took the lesson but did not communicate at all with the instructors about the students age or water condition. We were traveling from Korea and on tight schedules to enjoy Honolulu and it was a total waste of time. We'd have been able to book surfing lessons at some other places who are kids-friendly or spend the day doing something else instead of waiting couple hours for the lessons of which instructors turned down. As a first time surfer I had an amazing time! If you were wondering if you should book with this group the answer is YES! Trevor (who is amazing!!) spent the first part of the lesson explaining technique and how to safely surf. He made it so fun and enjoyable. After, my fiancé and I went out to surf! The wind was against us so it was extremely tiring to get out but thankfully Trever made our lives easy and towed us out to our surfing spot. Trevor spent a lot of time with me, reminding me what to think about, and encouraged me when the first wave came. He gave me tips and pointers after each wave if I fell or what I could improve on. I stood up for the first time ever on the surf board and I could hear cheering from Trever and my fiancé. Overall, I had an amazing experience and would 100% book with them again. I highly recommend the private vs group lesson as I really got that 1 on 1 attention which pushed me to the next level. **From one newbie to another don't forget to sunscreen behind your legs and your butt. For a first-timer surfer, taking these lessons was definitely a good idea. My instructor, Seth, taught me well, as well as told me certain tips while in the waters. While waiting for a good wave, we chatted and I really had a good time with him. The place where we surfed was perfect. The water wasn't too deep, so I wouldn't worry about drowning. Just be careful of the rocks The waves were very nice (at least for me, it's subjected to change probably), and there was good weather too, which really added to the experience. Overall, I would definitely recommend going to Gone Surfing Hawai'i. I personally love surfing now, and Gone Surfing Hawai'i has solidified this love. I am definitely going to go surfing next time I go to Hawai'i. P.S, The experience is better if you already know how to swim decently well. Paddling out takes strength and time, so good endurance is good too. Even if you don't have these traits however, I wouldn't worry too much. The instructors here (at least, mine did) will help you get out into the waters, and even decently far out, the water isn't too deep. Trevor was a phenomenal surf instructor. When you're trying a new sport, there's always the chance you pay a price for a lesson and feel like you didn't get enough out of it. Wasn't the case here. Even if I didn't catch a single wave (which I did :D), Trevor was teaching the whole time - reminding me to keep my shoulders pointed forward, helping with body position for paddling and surfing to maximize my time out there, answering every question I had - and there were hundreds - about surfing. He taught so much about the physics behind the sport that the price would have been worth it even if I didn't get in the water. And since I couldn't yet catch waves without a little push, to have him there to help plus the in-water guidance of how to get up on the board, tricks to push my limits on each ride, I mean, it was one of the most enjoyable experiences I've ever had. I felt like it was a life coaching session through a surfing lens haha. And he had so many great phrases he'd throughout, he was so genuinely pumped for each time I got up, his whole approach to it made the entire time fun. Even though I'm a novice, he made me feel like I belonged out there and was so welcoming and exciting to anyone interested in the sport. It was truly an incredible experience with Aria. On my first day of surfing in Hawaii, things got a bit rough, and I felt quite fearful. However, Aria's arrival changed everything - His calm and gentle demeanor immediately put me at ease. I shared my apprehensions, and Aria made me feel incredibly comfortable and less anxious. I surfed with Gone Surfing three times while in Waikiki and each time was awesome. The instructors met me at my level, challenging me a little more each time while always knowing when I needed support. I had so much fun, got a good workout, and felt myself improving each time! They were also super personable which made it fun to spend the time with them. I can't say enough positive things and hope to make my way back sometime soon to surf with them again! read more

My kids and I had such a great experience renting boards from Gone Surfing. Everyone there was super friendly and helpful. They answered all of our questions and gave us a demo since it's been a while that we took boards out. They made sure we had everything- gave us weather, wave and tide updates so we felt pretty confident and had the best time. Exceptional !! Not to be missed! My experience with the surf lessons at Gone Surfing Hawaii (at the Halekulani) was outstanding. The popup technique that James taught me was straightforward -- and much easier to do physically -- than any other technique that has been shown to me or that I could find on youtube. His focus on giving direct feedback after each wave was much appreciated and enabled me to learn at a comfortable pace. Also, all of the prep information and communication while out in the ocean made the experience that much more enjoyable. To my great surprise !!! I was able to get up on a wave during my first lesson on the 2nd try. Huge shout out to Dan Dan for our memorable surfing lesson! On a spur of the moment decision, I signed up for a 2 hour lesson with my 14 year old daughter. She had never surfed before, and I hadn't since I was a kid. Dan Dan was extremely kind and patient in his teaching, and he made the entire session enjoyable and fun. By the near of the lesson, we were both able to ride waves in for quite a while (my daughter even better than myself lol). WE CAN SURF! Jojo and her crew are the BEST! I was nervous about taking lessons especially getting lessons for my 2 young daughters (9 and 7 y/o) but the girls wanted to surf so we booked the lessons. Jojo and her crew went over what to do on the beach then we were off! Sydney (my oldest) was the first one to catch a wave and she was hooked. Saydee was next and the smile on her face was priceless. When it was my turn I was a little less graceful but I was able to get up on my first wave. The girls begged to go again the next day. I was tired so I booked the lessons for the girls while I watched from the beach. Learning to surf in Waikiki and with Jojo was the best part of our staycation! Pros: *Jojo and her crew - they made sure that we had fun and you know you are in safe hands *Location - walking distance from our hotel *Price - worth every penny *FUN!!! *Bragging rights - every time I retell our story (about 100x) the wave gets surprisingly bigger ;) Cons: *My daughters will not stop talking about it! Amazing experience!!! I took a 2 hour private lesson from Theo. Also, I got the photo and video package. The instructions Theo gave before getting into the water were very detailed and taught how to change direction, paddle against the wave, an easy way to pop up, what to do if bumping into someone/something, etc The water was warm so it was easy to get started. He took me a few miles inside and helped me paddle. With his instructions I was able to stand on most of the waves. Special shout out to the photographer, he took really good pictures/videos and was also there to help me if my instructor was still catching a wave to get me. They were both amazing surfers. This review is based on my experience on 8/29/23: I had a NEAR-DEATH experience due to the negligence of Gone Surfing Hawaii. First, the paddle board instructor did NOT give us proper information such as the current's speed / direction, how to to properly use the paddle, no safety precautions whatsoever, no life vest, etc. So My friend and I swam a little way but due to major tide coming that we were not warned about, the waves pushed us way out than we ever wanted. We swam as hard to fight it but it was impossible. Due to this company's NEGLIGENCE, My friend and I were STRANDED FOR HOURS in deep water and we almost died due to drowning / over-exhaustion. Gone Surfing Hawaii also never went looking for us (even though our rental booking had been long over). Strangers rescued us and that is why I am alive to write this review. After I made it ashore after hours of being stranded and LEFT FOR DEAD - I told Gone Surfing Hawaii what happened and they couldn't have been more rude / dismissive. I showed them the cuts and burns all over my skin from paddling for hours against the tide while trying to save my own life. In turn, They said "we are glad you survived, but we need to charge you for the extra time you had the boards". They did NOT call over a paramedic / did not give us water. Not only did I endure the TRAUMA of almost losing my life, but it also screwed up the rest of the trip's plans as well. I am still in physical and mental anguish from this experience, at the hands of Gone Surfing Hawaii. read more

We had an amazing experience with Jojo, Aria, and photographer (and bonus instructor!) Vinny. Our youngest daughter's most heartfelt Hawaii request was surfing lessons, so the whole family decided to be brave and give it a try, and we all actually surfed! This is a very professional yet laid back surf stand- they have rash guards to borrow and they'll hold on to your beach bag while you surf. The instructors are patient and talented and really made our lesson perfect for our family. Highly recommend! (The picture I'm adding is of course by Vinny- absolutely amazing shots! Awesome surfing lessons with Trevor! He gave us detailed instructions before we got into the water, and dragged me on when I was paddling too slow (LOL my useless weak arms). I was able to stand up the first wave that hit! And throughout the two hours class we must have been able to ride on the wave a dozen times! Trevor was very clear when he explained to us what we did wrong and gave us the right amount of help so we can improve and enjoy at the same time! The company is also very accommodating.
