What started in downtown at Larimer Square with dozens of artists has now become over two hundred talents chalking it up over several blocks around the Denver Art Museum. The way this festival works is sponsor-driven. Local businesses and organizations buy "squares" to which carefully curated artists are assigned with full autonomy in theme and execution to create, as long as the sponsors' names are chalked first. The artists are then given two days to create their design in real time, rain or shine. It's an opportunity to witness visual art in all shapes and colors. With the youth group and school opportunities as well, you've got kids of all ages being represented on the pavement. In addition to the visual arts, the festival includes live music and vendors. I strongly recommend planning your weekend around it. This is an event to build a tradition around, for sure!

Armed with a charged phone, a hat, water, and plenty of sunscreen, we were ready. Crowds weren't too bad at 10am, and several artists were lucky to be either shaded by the tall buildings or by the tents they brought. Being this early, we got to see works in progress, and I appreciated seeing all the detailed labor that goes into these beautiful, colorful, sadly temporary pieces. A free event, it is worth making the trip downtown. There are food and drink vendors throughout, as well as popular restaurants and bars nearby to pop into if you need a break. This year was my first time attending the RMSHC specialty, and it was held at the Al Lesser building. The grounds themselves were clean and beautiful. There was construction going on as well, but we never had an issue getting to our show site. The building was spacious, and there was even a microwave for me to reheat leftovers. Chairs were provided, and were quite comfy. Parking was plentiful, and there was a gorgeous lake for those who wished to take their dogs on a nice scenic walk. There were plenty of spots for photo ops as well! At the end of our specialty weekend, we made sure to pick up after ourselves and swept the whole building clean. As those involved in the longevity/breed preservation of well-bred purebred dogs, we were conscientious to present our best foot forward and leave no room for complaints. This was honestly such a wonderful venue, and I liked it much better than some of the fairgrounds that I've shown at in my home state of CA. I did hear that they would be raising their rates for renting the building, unfortunately, which is happening across so many venues these days. Hopefully we can return to show here again in 2028, but we shall have to wait and see.

What was off to me so that the pieces were not named and didn't have a blurb about their background which I've seen at other fairs. It's nice to have a little background to what inspired the artist. The larger exhibit room with 4H didn't open until noon, despite the website's posting of 10 am. The other exhibit hall had some exhibitors like a local bee club but several of those exhibits were unstaffed like the disaster response table. The bee club was hopping and interesting. Food wasn't really available, maybe one place. Customer service booth wasn't staffed at 11:30 a.m. when we left. Plenty of parking. Website said we had to pay but we didn't but maybe we were really early.

I've seen it grow and become one of the highlights of fall. I have not been since COVID. Wow. What happened? I really hate leaving critical reviews, but had to in the hopes that person(s) who are organizing this event will read this and make some improvements. While I realize that inflation is terrible now, the cost of food was insane. Some other reviewer mentioned that the cost for a booth this year was around $200. Overall, they didn't have much to offer this year. We went on a Sunday which is often less busy, but it felt like the Arapahoe County Fair. There were only a few Scottish themed food items and rest were typical carnival food. There wasn't a vendor selling Guinness or cider. They had some craft beer, mead, and wine in a can. There was one small food truck selling scotch eggs and another selling cottage pies. Each of these vendors had very long lines. There were a few vendors selling fish and chips. Several turkey leg vendors. There were only one-two people working at each booth. The admission fee was strange. The website said purchasing tickets online would save money. It was $35 at the door and $40 if you purchased it online plus a $5 convenience fee. That made no sense. That is higher rather than lower. I purchased two tickets online anyway and only got one. I emailed them and they emailed me my tickets. A few people mentioned that whomever organized the Festival needed to find a better vendor for selling tickets online. I would agree. Their website needs to be updated. Schedules of events were unclear. There was no information about parking and when we arrived, there were no signs indicating where we should park. There was a janky little machine that you could pay for parking through that. When got there, there was no program or one printed map and schedule on a sandwich board sign, so you could take a picture of. It was a map that looked like a 3rd grader did it with Minecraft and information on which tent to go to for the music. There were about half the number of pipe bands, competitive dancing, dogs of the British Isles, and agility dog shows. At the closing ceremony, there were only a handful of people in the bleachers and maybe 3 bands. It was so sad to see it decline like this. Just overall, it seemed like no thought or attention was given towards anything and it was like they thought the festival was going to run itself. I don't know how the festival is supposed to be run -- is it all volunteers?

I'm still a fan, but there have been many negative changes to the festivities: prices are higher,…read morethere were no rescue dogs there, on Sunday there were minimal dog agility activities, the heavy armour jousting was absent, and many of the clans have pulled out. We plan to get there early so we can get parking, and take a picnic rather than eat the festival food. Sis and I go to walk with the Douglas Clan in the service on Sunday, and love visiting with other clan members. Albannach was also present, as was the Welsh Baker in a separate tent set up for enjoying a Scotch egg and scones.

The event takes place under the pavilion in Roosevelt Park and this year was expanded to be a three day event. With a couple of nights of performances at the Dickens Opera House. So the L.J.F. isn't a destination event, meaning that people from all over the country come to Longmont for. But it is still deserving of the attention of any and everyone that loves jazz here in Colorado or is into supporting the local arts scene. LJF is a free event which is great. They have lots of local jazz, Latin jazz and salsa acts from the metro area. This year it was great to see some groups play that I've been wanting to see, like the Adam Bodine Trio, Quemando, the Longmont All Star Jazz Band, etc. Two artists whom I seen perform before t other festivals, Bob Montgomery and Eric Gunnison are always a treat to hear perform and were both excellent at the Longmont Jazz Festival. So this event in my opinion will only continue to grow year after year and I hope that you as well as others will be a part of it by attending. Looking forward to being there again next year!
