Walked into Farm North Yarn Company as a guy who knows absolutely nothing about yarn... and walked out feeling like I just got a masterclass. I went in to grab a gift for my wife, fully expecting to point at something and hope for the best. Instead, Ms. Kay took the time to walk me through different types of yarn, what they're used for, and even the kinds of projects they go into. She didn't just sell me yarn, she educated me... patiently. The shop itself is a great setup. Tons of options, great quality, and you can tell everything in there has a purpose. It's one of those places where people who know what they're doing can really get after it, and people like me don't feel completely lost. Bottom line, Ms. Kay is just a genuinely good human being. DO NOT GO HERE IF YOUR ALASKAN NATIVE!!! As an Alaskan Native who can afford this type of yarn and a sister who can afford 100 times what I can, this is the last place we will bring our business and most definitely tell all our friends and family to steer clear of here. I was followed like I was a thief, I was shadowed around by a younger rude lady who when asked me rudely 'Do you need help.' I said 'No' then was met with 'Don't you mean no thank you.' Then the older woman walked over and said she's just doing her job and if I would stop touching the yarn then maybe I would be left alone. The older woman was nice to us when she first came back but over time her true colors have shown and she's even lashed out at my sister. There are other online options that are far less expensive and dont treat me or my family like scum. The money isn't the issue, the treatment is and I hope others take that into account. read more

If you are an Alaskan Native women, better expect that you will be treated with hostility and rudeness just by looking Alaska Native at this business; no matter now much you were planning to spend. This is December 2025. Cannot believe this is still happening today. Here is a business which treats Alaska native ladies with contempt and the staff follow around my family members from the second we walk in treating us like criminals. We spend $10k+ on knitting yarn and supplies annually, and have been going to Far North for about 4 years now. But since Annie's passing, the true colors of how her mother thinks of Alaska natives is starting to shine. This attitude carries to the employee helpers who are even worse. It's disgusting in this day and age that this kind of behavior still exists. My wife and sister-in-law were spoken to very rudely, barked at verbally, and ignored by the staff members. For these reasons, we now drive the extra miles to Eagle River, or even to Wasilla. Those shops we are treated as equal humans with kindness, respect, and positive social engagement. We go out of our way now to let all our friends and family know, both in Anchorage and the villages, to avoid this business at all costs. It's just not right to speak derogatorily to other humans at a place of business, at any level. read more

Still a big fan of this shop, though it's new digs are smaller than the last location. For some reason the building that leased space decided not to renew this business' lease. Shame, because once COVID restrictions lift there isn't any space to knit with others. As it is, people come in and crowd the front to get stitch assistance from the ever helpful Annie. There is a $25/year membership card to get 10% off. It's definitely helpful to get through Alaskan winters. Will recommend. read more

Crafting is an addiction and all crafters are enablers. The other day I was scurrying around town from craft shop to craft shop for something specific to no avail. The gals at Michael's advised me to check Far North Yarn Co, which is apparently a block from my house. Duh! As soon as I walked through the doors of Far North, I knew I was in trouble. I was like a junkie in a crack house. This place is crammed full of the yarn of my fantasy. No crappy acrylic yarn here... it's all lovely hand-dyed artisnal yarns of wool, alpaca, mohair. Most of their skeins run $15-25 dollars, but they're worth every penny. Imported from all kinds of exotic places like Finland, Ireland, and Bolivia, Far North is the We-Are-The-World of knitting. Not knowing how to knit is not an excuse to walk out empty handed, since it's knitting school too. And did I mention it's around the corner from my house? Close enough that even a blizzard would be able to keep me away. Lord help me. The last thing I need is another glorious but expensive hobby. I think I need an intervention. read more

I am so, so pleased and excited to have had the opportunity to find FAR NORTH YARN Co. When I arrived at the store, I was pleased to find a very knowledgeable and gracious manager. She treated each of us in turn and offered different suggestions to consider that would enhance our different projects. She also gave me a free pattern to keep! I was in heaven!!! Here is an important detail to consider when you visit this shop. When my husband and I visited for the first time, we couldn't find the shop! A few years back, FAR NORTH YARN Co . moved to new local. The new address is 751 East 36th Ave. Anchorage, AK 99503 Apparently, the county hasn't updated for everyone else. Best yarn shop in town! Over Thanksgiving, I picked up some yarn in Seattle to make a hat. Upon starting the pattern, I promptly screwed up, so I went to Far North for help when I got home. They were incredibly gracious and helpful, and didn't even charge me! (I bought more yarn anyway because 1. I have a problem and 2. I'm not rude.) Since then, I've been back multiple times for the same hat, and have received help from Kaye, Annie, and Denton. They are all incredibly knowledgeable and don't get frustrated with me when I ask them to rip it out to the same place for the fourteenth time. There is always a delightful group at their knitting circle table, and everyone is eager to help. The team here brings in absolutely gorgeous yarn and they have a customer loyalty card/program that gives you 10% off your purchases for a year for only $25! I've bought way too much yarn already and I'll definitely be back. read more

I love Far North! To use Joy G.'s analogy below, I am a junkie and this is indeed my crack. Beware: prices are steep--I've never left the store without spending over $50--but that is because they offer only the best yarn. And given that this is Alaska, the prices seem to fair and match up fairly well to what I see regularly in NYC and DC. Kay--the owner--is super friendly, a fantastic knitter, and a wealth of knowlege. Her son is great too, though he's a little eccentric and rubbed us the wrong way at first. The sale section by the front door has some great stuff, so keep an eye out for it. The hardest part is finding enough skeins of the same yarn for a project, or worse, trying to resist the single skein of amazing yarn at an even more amazing price. (Yes, I am speaking from personal experience.) Finally, they have lots of tables for knitting circles; when I'm back in town I definitely plan to stop by and knit for a bit. I'd have to say this is the nicest yarn store in Anchorage. They've got an incredible selection of yarn, knitting needles, books/patterns and buttons. The store is well organized and clean. There's a couple of places to sit and knit and chat with others. The staff is incredibly nice and knowledgeable. Annie, in particular, sat with me and waited patiently for me to knit a swatch and then helped me look for mitten and cowl patterns that I could try. I've been shopping here for two years and took a great beginning knitting class. The prices are good, and the owner is fantastic. She remembers names and details every time you go in. I can't say enough good things about this store, it is a treasure trove for beautiful yarns. The owners, Annie and Kaye and staff Denton and Sierra are all incredibly friendly, helpful and knowledgable. I just completed the beginners knitting classes and had a wonderful time. Annie helped me buying the yarn and needles for the hat that we made and Kaye taught me how to cast on and get going. The instruction was really clear and it made knitting simple and enjoyable. I have gone on to make another hat in yet another beautiful yarn. The store has such a wonderful atmosphere and they make you welcome to come and spend time knitting at the community table. Denton and Sierra have helped and advised me when I've made numerous mistakes and I look forward to every time I can call by, visit, hang out, knit, chat, choose yarn for a new project and meet new knitters. read more

A wonderful place to visit, shop and learn in! Kay, Annie and Denton are terrific. They have helped me find patterns, the "perfect" yarn for a project and taught me new stitches in the five (or more) years I have been going there. With the price of "cheap" yarn quickly rising, their prices are great. I have seen comparable pricing in Minneapolis and Houston. One evening I went in looking for a special button to go on a hat for my grandson. Annie got the catalog out, helped me look and when we couldn't find them said she would talk with their supplier.
