Big love for all Farm Boy locations. A first to try this one: in a good location on Hazeldean Rd in Kanata. All of the same Farm Boy goodies - absolutely love their deli section. Seed to sausage meats and an ample supply of produce and veggies throughout.

I'd never heard of Farm Boy before and I'll be honest, I had no idea what all the hubbub was about. I knew people who swear by this grocery store, but folks, it's a grocery store. You go in, you buy your box of Froot Loops and aerosol cheese, and beat a hasty retreat. It's all a little different at Farm Boy. The first thing you face as soon as you walk in is the cheese section, complete with cut samples. So, give me a hunk of cheese as soon as I show up anywhere, and I'm good to go. The cheese and deli meat section is flanked on the opposite side of the aisle by the fresh prepared foods, allowing you to take home dinner without the bother of dirtying up your own pans. And suffice to say, the food is tasty. The store size itself is not huge in the least, meaning that the selection is much smaller than your bigger Loblaws or Dominion stores. However, what you lose in size, you gain back in quality. The meats are tender, the fish fresh, and the produce tasty. I was totally sceptical of a place this size being a grocery store that folks freaked out about, but it's truly a great shopping experience. Go for the home-made salsa. The hotter the better.

Not for nothing they call this a "Superstore"! I could easily get soooo side-tracked in this…read morestore... it really is HUGE, and they don't only sell groceries, but also household items as well, from towels to dishes, and clothing to cookware. My significant other is especially good at steering me away from the back of the store so that I don't get caught buying another gadget! They don't always carry the same items; a few years ago, they had stoneware loaf pans at a really excellent price - about $7.00 each. I had bought one through the Pampered Chef (which I love and still use), but I would have bought another one here (at that price!) so that I could have made 2 loaves at once. The best way to shop here is to have a list and stick to it. Since the local newspapers are no longer being published, the flyers are not getting distributed like they used to either, so it's more difficult to know what's on sale there. I've just installed a new app called "flipp", and will try to keep tabs on the specials - not only at this store, but everywhere we shop.

The staff is usually very helpful. Maybe I'd really give them 4.5 stars, if only I could grtant half stars. Maye it's COVID giving grief... We won't know the answer to this one until we are able to ease into the "new normal" - and after it has smoothed out, and stock is more readily available. But here's my grief or beef, if you will: Sometimes we go to this shop because of their advertising. Today was just such a case. They advertised sockeye salmon in tins for 2 for $5.00. Hubby went to the shop to get it a few days ago when the ad first came out. None in stock. So today we went back, presuming that they've had time to receive a new shipment, but that was not the case. And unfortunately, due to COVID, they can't give out raincheck vouchers to come back later to get the same price (this one was a significant savings, too). Maybe it was the clerk's attitude? Maybe I'm getting old!! So, Metro store's first "ding". Sorry!! The fish counter manager is still excellent! Will definitely go back. Oh, part 2: we ordered a pizza for $10.00 and a calzone, both made on site. The calzone was huge! The breading was thick enough to hold things together and not fall apart. The stuffing was not thick enough. Maybe this was a good thing, as it didn't drool sauce and filling all down my face as I ate! I liked the breading better than the filling. There was too much breading and not enough filling IMHO. The pizza was 2.5 out of 5. The price was right on both of these items, that's for sure!

There are not a lot of places where you can get Southeast Asian groceries in Kanata, so this place…read moreis like the only game in town if you live in the far West End. If you're willing to go into town to go to Chinatown or go down by the airport to go to T&T you'll have more options, but in the West End where Kanata is, it's slim pickings. Granted some of the local mainstream grocery stores like Loblaws, Real Canadian Superstore, and even Walmart, carry some Asian products, but they are mostly the Asian products that have gone mainstream like black bean sauce and udon noodles. However, if you want some of the harder to find ingredients, you'll need to go to an Asian grocery store and this one will have you covered. Their selection is not vast, but will do in a pinch. Prices are not low but they are not outrageous either. Although higher than T&T and Kowloon Market. Also not everything has prices listed, so you have to ask. I saw a bag of beef jerky by the cash that looked interesting with no price on it, I asked and it was over $30. In all fairness, beef is pricey these days, and it was a big bag, but I'm wary of spending over $30 to try something out, like what if I don't like it? Lol. Right now (early 2022) there seems to be a shortage of rice noodles (like Pad Thai noodles) in mainstream grocery stores for some reason, but this store has an entire aisle full of rice noodles! They also have some items from Nguyen Huong, a Vietnamese shop in Toronto, like Banh Mi (Vietnamese sandwiches), and Banh Bao (steamed bread with meat filling). They also have lots of different types of Vietnamese sausages (Cha Lua) by the cash register. On my most recent I picked up a pack of rice noodles ($2.80), and a slice of Pandan and Taro jelly cake ($2.50). Even though the cake was wrapped in plastic wrap, I could smell the coconut milk and pandan. Yum yum. I'm much closer to Chinatown than Kanata, so I have no real reason to go here, but I check it out if I find myself in Kanata. It's in a strip mall with lots of free parking.

The Long Version: I stopped in British Pride Bakery to check it out since I was in the area for other reasons. I was impressed with the amount of snacks they had imported from the UK. They had lots of biscuits (cookies), chocolate and crisps (chips). They had a clearance section where items were marked down to half-price. These were all nearing or past their best before dates. They also had clearance items throughout the store. I was there for the baked goods though. I got a Corned Beef Pasty ($4.50), a Custard Tart ($3.50) and a Butter Tart ($2.95). After I ordered the pasty, I saw they had warm ones in the warmer by the cash register (different flavours though). The ones in the glass displays are cold, so I had to take it home to warm it up. The Corned Beef Pasty was ok, but the filling was mostly potatoes with very little corned beef. The pastry was flaky and it was good but I enjoyed the sweet items I bought more. The custard tart was delicious. I like that it wasn't too sweet. The custard was soft and creamy. The crust was a little too buttery for me, lol. But I'm sure that's an odd complaint. The butter tart was sweeter and also tasty. It has no raisins or nuts. I prefer to have something in the filling, but those who like just the buttery goo will like the ones here. The place is spacious, brightly lit and clean. Staff were very courteous and pleasant. FYI: They charge a 2.26% surcharge if you use a credit card to pay. They are transparent about this, the cashier advised me and it's posted right next to their payment machine. I personally find this charge hefty. I chose not to pay it by using debit instead. This store opened November 13, 2023. It's a chain. The first store opened in Cambridge, ON in 2010. They have since expanded to 8 locations across Ontario. This Stittsville location is in a plaza. Lots of free parking available in the plaza. Review #35 (2025)
