I had high hopes for this visit as I had read how good it was, here and elsewhere. So, either we had extremely bad luck or those reviews are less than reliable.
Firstly, the good pointsnice local ales, nice ambience (much changed than my last visit over thirty years ago and before a catastrophic fire had gutted the place), friendly welcome by the aforementioned old lady. And that's about it.
The negative points far outweigh the positive ones. Firstly, we waited 45 minutes before we were noticed by a waitress than about another fifteen minutes to get our food. We should have counted our blessings, the people on the next table had waited over an hour to get less than they anticipated. There was some mumbled excuse the place being busy but more than half the tables were empty so, go figure. Secondly, the food was appalling, especially given the price £10.25 each. We both had cod and chips, which came with home-made (so the menu said) tartar sauce, which was strangely homogeneous with barely a lump or change of colour, and salad (which was largely the accursed rocket). The fish was probably frozen or, if not that, massively overcooked and left to keep warm under a hot light. The watery, tender, melt-in-the-mouth nature of fresh, well cooked fish was totally absent from this apology for good food. The fibrous, dry fish analogue was encased in rock hard (supposedly) beer batter. A smallish handful of not at all special chips was the main accompaniment.
Needless to say, we will not be returning and our search for a half decent licensed eatery in this part of the country will continuestay tuned! read more
