The new site can recycle many more materials, and has been very well designed to cope with high volumes of traffic on busy weekends. The unloading area is raised above a series of giant skips. The purpose of each is clearly designated. This keeps pedestrians well away from the large vehicles used for moving the rubbish around the tip. Pros New layout provide a safe and ordered environment even at busy times. Many different materials can be sorted and recycled. Cons Some materials and items have to be recycled in a different area from the main disposal area, necessitating two stops. Children are not allowed out of cars, and the drive around the perimeter of the site only provides a limited view of the giant bulldozers in operation. In summary, the site provides an excellent trip out for adults and their household waste, but although initially exciting for children, they may become frustrated or bored by only fleeting glimpses of heavy machinery. My toddler fell asleep during the third visit of the weekend.

I was first recommended this place by my friend who is a graphic designer. I wanted a place that could print a small run of exhibition invitations to a high standard at a reasonable price. I have also used them to print my business cards. I have been impressed with the quality of their printing and card, it gives a good impression. They are able to print in small batches and not charge the earth by using digital printing rather than traditional methods. They also offer a design consultancy service.

The staff are delightful and you are welcomed to sit with a cup of real coffee while you ponder. Earthworks is a manufacturer (downstairs) so your furniture can also be made to order if you wish. This place is so amazing that it's worth a visit on its own and you'll find ideas in abundance!

IT services at the University of Sussex are responsible for the entire of the university's internet…read moreand computer networks. They provide computer 'clusters' all over the campus, but their headquarters is found in Engineering I (also now known as Shawcross). The above opening times relate to the hours you'll find a member of staff around to give you a helping hand (sit in the computer room for a day and you'll be amazed at how many people manage to delete their files, or can't work the new Microsoft Word!), but the actual computer room (as well as others on campus) is available for use 24 hours and accessible via a key code. I spent the week before my dissertation run up in here, and the 24 hours access was, unfortunatley, all too valuable! The staff are also really helpful - you'll need to book in if you want an IT person to diagnose problems you're having logging your laptop onto the system, but a guy fitted me in at short notice (whilst waiting for some software to load on his other customer's laptop!) and happily helped me out. I'm sure some have had more negative experiences with Sussex Uni IT - as the internet can frustratingly go down at times - but all in all, it's been an excellent and efficient service in my experience.

That was the beginning of first semester and Shawcross was swarming with students. I was in line for pretty much the entire afternoon. However, service since them as seemed much more prompt and friendly - I can view the service desk from the computers in Shawcross. There are several printing areas/computer clusters available on campus - not only are they listed on the IT website, but you can tell from looking online how many computers are free at each location! Oh, what an age. I'm sure it'll come in handy when papers are due.

Willingdon Trees is an area in Eastbourne/Hampden Park that does not have a particularly good…read morereputation locally. It is an area made up, mainly, of housing association housing and council housing. Because of this the residents are usually low income families or those on benefits which can often mean lots of children who end up bored and with not a lot to do of an evening. This is what has given this area a bad reputation. You often find large groups of pre teens and teenagers hanging around at the shops in Holly Place, which for people not well accquainted with the area can be a little daunting. Having spent 5 years living in the area myself, i can honestly say the only time i ever had a problem was when my flat was burgled and my computer taken as a result. But that can happen what ever area you live in. There is a community centre next to the shops in Holly Place which offers all sorts of events and classes etc for local residents - i havn't visited recently so couldn't tell you what is on offer there now but do pop in and find out if you are in that area as there used to be quite a variety of things on offer.

The Brighton Youth Centre doesn't look like much from the outside - indeed, I had trouble finding…read moreit even with google-mapped directions, and nobody I asked had heard of it. However, inside is a safe and friendly space for kids and youth to participate in a variety of programs. A gymnasium hosts various sporting events and the classroom-type rooms upstairs lean toward less physical activities. Graffiti along the inside walls ensures the space is adolescent friendly and not at all like a school. I was in one of the upstairs rooms, assisting with back to back workshops sessions put on by the Little Green Pig Writing Project. It was great, creative fun for youth 7 - 16. I recommend a) getting involved as a volunteer with the Centre or b) getting the kids you know into some of the great programs!

Get involved in dance, football, basketball, try the full size skate park on the roof (yes thats right) or do some quieter more reflective creative work, learn to cook or just chill and watch tv. SAM is the personable acronym of Sussex Academy of Music, a business started up in 2008 by two…read moreentrepreneurial youngsters in their early 20s. The premises are a converted business unit in the Riverside Business Centre, and being so new, are well equipped with nothing missing or broken. The situation is good as well - although it initially looks a bit soulless, a moment's walk over to the sea wall provides you with beautiful boats aplenty on the river and a lovely place to practise outdoors on a sunny Saturday. They mostly give lessons to youngsters, but adults can be involved as well. I went here, though, not as a student but to use their recording studio. This proved to be a good move on the part of those who were deciding. The studio was in good condition, with a little dais for drums and a medium sized area for recording - we fitted an eight piece band in here comfortably for a day's session. Our engineer was an enthusiastic, friendly guy with a great musical ear and infinite patience, and really took care with it, almost as if it were his band, which put me right at ease. I'd definitely recommend this place if you want to be well taken care of.
