Perched on top of Morro do Sarapião, 42 meters (137 feet) tall and 130 meters (459 feet) above sea level, the Olinda Lighthouse was inaugurated on September 7, 1941. It's painted with black and white horizontal stripes.
This is the second lighthouse built here--the first was constructed in 1872, but was always threatened by the advance of the sea, and by the 20thCentury was in a bad state of repair.
While a small elevator with access to the lantern was installed, capable of transporting one person at a time (the first in a lighthouse in Brazil), it is not open to the public. It's still very pretty, both during the day and at night. read more
