It's located on the Androscoggin River and does indeed have some pleasant water views. Most of the gravestones are simple but there are some modest obelisks scattered around. For some odd reason the village schoolhouse was actually located within the boundaries of the graveyard and wasn't moved to another location until 1904. The land where the schoolhouse once stood were then sold off as gravesites. There are no more open sites for sale in the cemetery but there is a lovely, marble columbarium that has small spaces for urns that can be purchased. Sure there are plenty of very old and worn graves dating back centuries but there are also a large amount of huge, impressive and appropriately morbid structures that give the cemetery a very lugubrious and spooky feel. Many unique ones that feature all kinds of different biblical figures and sayings. Some delicate and sensitive and others just plan massive and looming. The cemetery is located in a peaceful and lovely section of South Portland and even has a small river flowing through it. A lovely place to walk around and quietly spend some time with the deer departed.
A very lonely…read moregraveyard The Lewis Cemetery is a small and very old graveyard located on Barter Island. A very isolated part of Boothbay that few people venture to. The cemetery serves the people of the small island and has been in use for a long, long time. Hard to tell exactly when it was first started because like many old cemeteries in Maine most of the graves are very worn and difficult to read. The harsh weather does a job on even the toughest stone. Most of the grave markers are small and simple but quite interesting. I noticed a lot of Barters buried here which makes sense since that is the name of the small island. Some had flowers and were well taken care of. Obviously someone still cares and comes to say hello to the deceased. A very lonely and historic place that is a cool place to walk around and look, listen and feel the past. It gets cold and windy here and winter comes very early. Not a bad place to spend eternity, or at least a small part of it.
