Stones and schools…read more The Riverview Cemetery is a lovely old graveyard that had it's beginning around 1800. It's located on the Androscoggin River and does indeed have some pleasant water views. Most of the gravestones are simple but there are some modest obelisks scattered around. For some odd reason the village schoolhouse was actually located within the boundaries of the graveyard and wasn't moved to another location until 1904. The land where the schoolhouse once stood were then sold off as gravesites. There are no more open sites for sale in the cemetery but there is a lovely, marble columbarium that has small spaces for urns that can be purchased. RIverview Cemetery is beautiful, peaceful and unique old graveyard. After all, how many people can say they went to school in a cemetery.

The Kenniston Cemetery is also known as the Old Burying Ground or simply The Old Cemetery. It's is…read moreold but not all that old, at least by New England standards. Most of the graves are from the early 1800's with a couple that go back into the late 1700's. The graveyard is simple as would be expected from a small fishing village. A few small obelisks and some nautical motifs but most of the gravestones are quite simple. Lots of the yellow lichen that seems to love growing in cemeteries by the sea and other wild flowers grace the area. As is the case with many old cemeteries in harsh environments, many of the stones are worn and difficult to read but curiously some are very readable and look fresh. I guess it depends on which direction they're facing. The wind can howl off the water in places like this. Kenniston is located on the main road leading into the center of Boothbay Harbor but is back a ways and can be difficult to see. It is worth the effort to find because it has a nice combination of history, spookiness and in the spring, a touch of color and life from all the wild flowers.
