My favourite is their butterfly chicken which is marinated in a tandoori sauce. It just tastes amazing and is perfect for the bbq because it is much quicker to cook because it is cut in half. It isn't the cheapest butchery but you really get what you pay for. They are very experimental with their sausage blends which I enjoy. Their pork saussies are my favourite as well as their chicken breakfast sausages. If you want your chicken portioned they do a really great job of it here and they are just so friendly and helpful. There is plenty of free parking on the street as well as some parking behind the building, y'all know I love that!

This gives us a top quality product, free of any nasty's so we know it is good for us. They also have a great selection of both standard products, I really like the crumbed schnitzel and the Italian stuffed chicken breasts. They also now have pies, which are full on top cut meat, no off cuts that lots of other places put in their pies. If you ever watch Food Inc. then you will see why we now choose to shop for our meat here, rather than the supermarkets or chain stores. Its just a better way.

These are superb places to pick up some cheap vegetables or frozen dumplings to supplement your general groceries shopping. Or a kick-ass curry paste you can't read the title of. Well placed between New Market and Royal Oak, hopefully the small shopping area it sits in starts to grow again. The staff are timid but smiley. The big negative of this store is the meat section. Its malodor keeps you away from half the store. If fish smells like fish, it's not fresh. If the fish isn't fresh, then what about the hanging duck or pork chops? There are plenty of Asian treats here (and bad English translations). If you ever need mass amounts of soy sauce and rice you know you can always come to a place like Greenlane Market Place.

When it closed down, I was really…read morecurious to see what would take it's place and monitored it's construction for a few months. Shortly after it's opening I went in, it was a supermarket of sorts, mostly Asian orientated but still had lots of fresh fruit and veggies. I decided I would do a shop here as their prices seemed very cheap so I was curious to compare. I bought a whole heap of fruit and vegetables as well as some dumplings and pastes and noodles etc. At the checkout everything came to around $30!? It was so cheap! Their produce was lovely, the only irk I have is that it isn't stored correctly, for example fruits and veggies that are best refrigerated weren't and I feel they could have been even better if they were stored properly. Other than that this place is great and I can see it become a regular of mine if I ever need to pop in somewhere quickly for a few things. The people in there were really helpful, some don't speak English but there seemed to be a few around that could help.

They've expanded over the years (and were recently lucky enough to be picked for Ponsonby Central) but the Ladies Mile store is still going strong, serving the sandal-wearing hippies and conscious hipsters alike. My main picks at Ceres are part of the Ceres Organics brand. I really like their beans and regularly use Ceres Adzuki and Borlotti beans. I'm also a recent convert to cooking with black beans, and Ceres' canned black beans are a great staple to have in the cupboard. While I do enjoy eating pre-prepared vegetarian meals a lot, I do like having Ceres products at home because they make me want to be a better cook; they make me want to make real whole foods in my kitchen and be conscious of what I eat. So a thanks for years of helping me eat better is definitely in order!
