The shop has the feel of a cross between a hardware store and a soft furnishings shop. I actually stumbled across Brewers via Google, after a fruitless search for a shade of white paint that only seemed to be available to the trade. Homebase completely failed me, since the barely pubescent Saturday staff weren't exactly the most knowledgeable, but Brewers was listed as a place that dealt in trade colours. After about 30 seconds of looking at paint on the shelves in Brewers, someone spotted my cluelessness and rescued me. He quickly found out what exactly I wanted, despite my vagueness, and gave great advice on what I needed to buy. There was a clear focus on what the customer wants, rather than trying to sell me more than I needed. A nice touch is that while I was waiting for my paint to be mixed up, I was offered a free drink from the vending machine. Ok, it's hardly fresh filter coffee, but it's still much more than you could reasonably expect from a DIY shop. I'm definitely shopping here for my decorating needs from now on, and avoiding Homebase like the plague.

Despite its upmarket address Pand P's interior is reassuringly undaunting - the usual jumble of Dulux pots and brushes of any paint store. But ask to see the shop's own paint charts and you will be amazed-there are 24 variations on off-white alone-all deliciously subtle-of a standard to rival Farrow and Ball but more flexible- not only because the base range is wider, but because each colour can be tweaked to reach the precise colour you want, at no extra charge. A sample pot of your individual prescription costs £3.50-and the mix is kept on record by the shop- incredibly,customers return to the store years later to re-order a tried and trusted colour mix. Prices are very reasonable for designer paint and compare favourably with the leading brands.The shop also delivers-a service which I found faultlessly reliable.The paint itself is superb quality- a little Greene base, which is very low toxic and of a texture which even earned the grudging praise of my rather moody decorators.I was quite simply over the moon with the final results. We're talking just four tubes of mastic, not a big sale for them but they went out of their way to find a good match, emailing me over photos of the grout I had bought next to potential sealant colours and really cared about what the bathrooms would look like at the end. It's no surprise that homeowners as well as large property developers who are doing up 20 brand new bathrooms at a time, all go there. These guys are experts and really care.

She had amazing product knowledge on tiles even to which grout worked best. Our neighbour is a plumber, and he recommended that we come here and have a look at their stock. They have a huge selection of paints, some really good tiles, excellent value flooring (we saw nice-looking solid oak floorboards that worked out under £30 per square meter...we might have to come back!!) They even have a selection of baths/ showers/ loos/ bathroom fittings. It is CHEAP!! I thought Tops tiles was good value, but this place made their tiles seem expensive!! *Pro-tip: Be careful if you want to park near here! We saw a traffic warden wandering around and all the parking spaces seemed to be for residents only!!

The great thing was having this Homebase about a mile from home. Its a fairly big version and has plenty of parking. Inside there are all the relevant sections for us, paint, wood, tools, nails, etc. The garden section is also very extensive and we have spent some time there in the Spring picking out bits and pieces. My only criticism would be the check-out, it has to be the slowest around. I also had to wait ages for someone to help mix some paint even though there were only a handful of customers in the place. However it is convenient and the prices are good.
