The dedicated area of riverfront is modest, with concrete steps leading down to the banks of a…read morerather messy industrial river, a large waterfront amphitheater, and various seats and signage. They had restrooms, which were in pretty unpleasant condition. There were locals there from a wide variety of backgrounds, as this seemed to be one of the few opportunities to get to the waterfront around the town's floodwall. There's not much to actually do other than sit around, and given the surrounding wilderness is so much prettier than this, I struggle to see it as having anything other than limited use. And it needed better maintenance.

Less than 2,000 residents. It's a nice little town just outside of Ashland and there is a bridge that takes you right over to Kenova, WV and Virgina Point Park. I have family that lives here so I am in several times a year and have called it home away from home for the last decade. On a side note, all kind of food options on Louisa Rd (US 23/RT 60) and if you need gas, there is a speedway on the same road next to the post office that typically has good gas prices for the area.

Kenova was founded in 1859 and West Virginia became a state in 1863. Kenova has always been like a second home to me. It is a great little city and a bunch of little shops and businesses to explore. I still have family in the city and even lived here for a bit with my grandmother during college summer breaks. This visit was to hang out with relatives and grab a bite to eat. Some highlights of the city include: -Dreamland Pool -Virginia Point Park -Town Square -Museum -Kenova Pumpkin House -Evaroni's Pizza I couldn't believe there was not a Yelp page for The City of Kenova and jumped at the chance to add this little gem for the region.

Located along Kentucky Route 1, this marker points out some history and commerce of the area…read more The front of the marker reads, "Laurel Furnace. Built 4 miles west by George and Samuel Wurts in 1849. The bottom half of the stack, originally 39 feet high, is carved from one block of stone cliff. Maximum inner diameter 10 1/2 feet. It made 2150 tons of iron in 31 weeks of 1855, consuming 376,250 bushels of charcoal fuel. The last blast was in 1874." And the reverse, "Iron Made in Kentucky. A major producer since 1791, Kentucky ranked 3rd is U.S. in 1830s, 11th in 1965. Charcoal timber, native ore, limestone supplied material for numerous furnaces making pig iron, utensils, munitions in the Hanging Rock, Red River, Between Rivers, Rolling Fork, and Green River Regions. Old charcoal furnace era ended by depletion of ore and timber and the growth of railroads." The marker was erected in 1967 by the Kentucky Historical Society, Kentucky Department of Highways, and Armco Steel Corp. It is marker number 1019. There is room to pull over to read the marker. The front of the marker reads, "The first woman elected to Kentucky legislature, 1921. Mary E. Flanery elected to House of Representatives from Boyd County. She had worked for woman suffrage; was concerned with marriage and divorce laws and educational reform. At her death, 1933, a bronze marker was placed at her seat, No. 40, in house chamber." And the reverse, "Mary E. Flanery was a journalist, suffragist, and politician. Born 1867 in Carter County (now Elliott County), she wrote for Ashland Daily Independent, 1904-26; also taught in Elliott and Carter counties. Chosen in 1924 as delegate to the Democratic National Convention, New York City. In addition to public life, she and her husband reared five children. Buried, Ashland Cemetery." It is marker number 2136 and it was erected in 2004 by the Democratic Womans Club of Kentucky, the Kentucky Historical Society, and the Kentucky Department of Highways. The Oldtown Covered Bridge crosses the Little Sandy River. It is a Burr Truss design and a bit of…read morean arch with multiple kingposts and was completed around 1880. It is 194 feet long in two spans and has survived multiple floods in the area. Closed to vehicles since 1985, it has been through a couple of restorations and reconstructions with the most recent in 1999 with timber sourced from out of state. The bridge is open to pedestrians and easily walkable though just a little creepy. There's some history to be felt here. It is FREE and I very nice park. There are several vehicles there representing the US Army, US Air Force, US Marines and US Navy, and all the Wars that the Veterans of the USA were involved in. This is very nice and like a stated FREE. It is located on RT 23 along the Ohio River Kentucky Side. I recommend you stop and check it out. Smaller kids would really enjoy seeing the Plane, Helicopter and the Tank...I would definitely go here again, and I highly recommend if you are in the area...STOP and check it out.
