I awoke with with intentions of cycling back to Dublin from Tullamore, but a quick look outside…read moreindicated that it was raining. Much as I enjoy cycling, I wasn't keen on going 150 kilometres in the rain, so we decided to get the train home. I rang my oul lad to find out the times, and fortuitously enough, there was one scheduled to leave in half an hour. He also warned me, though, that there was only room on each train for two bicycles, and we had three, but I figured that we'd head down to the station and sort something out. We got to the station (a 2 min cycle from the centre of town) and made some inquiries at the ticket window. I'm not exaggerating when I say that the lady behind the counter is the most surly and sour-faced oul bitch that I should ever hope to meet. With an expression on her face like a bulldog licking piss from a nettle, she begrudgingly informed us that there was only two bicycles allowed per train. Was there not anything we could do, like disassemble one of the bikes or something? She just shrugged and took another swig from her vinegar bottle (she didn't really). At this point, another man came into the station and approached the counter, so we moved over to let him get to the window and to further discuss our options. He had what looked like an ID or swipecard in his hand, and he asked the woman if he possibly leave it in for someone. She made no verbal reply; she kind of shrugged and reluctantly accepted the item from the man, as if she had been offered a turd wrapped in cellophane. A lady who clearly detests members of the public should perhaps not be working in a customer relations capacity. We decided to buy tickets and hope for the best; when we went to the counter the lady repeated her refrain of two bikes per train. Yeah, we heard you the first ten times you old hag, give us the fucking tickets (which of course we didn't say to her face, but it was very tempting). The tickets were actually very reasonable. There was some promotion on, meaning that instead of being €26, the tickets were only a tenner, and it was only an extra €4 per bike. Out on the platform, we vented a little spleen about the harlot inside, and tried to figure out who would stay behind or what arrangements we'd make, when the conductor (I guess that what he is; yer man on the platform with the green flag) approached us. Three bikes, is it, he asked. Yes, we replied. Well I can't promise anything, but sure we'll do our best to get yiz on, alright? This spot-on chap is what turned a one-star review into a three star review. When the train came along he got all the bikes on with very little fuss. The sour-faced oul bitch on the counter should take a few pointers from her colleague's helpful approach. Tullamore Station: best to have your tickets bought in advance so you don't have to talk to that striapach in at the window, but be sure to doff your cap to the sound conductor.

It's a comfortable old shoe of a building, with some modern day polish. Bustling staff efficiently take care of you at reception or steer you into the dining room. There's always a carvery for lunch- which is always well attended. Given its location in the centre of the town square, parking is close at hand in the centre of the square. However, on a busy day these will fill up early in the day. We always stop there when travelling cross county - a handy and comfortable place to stop.

There was only one vending machine that was working and it wasn't fully stocked. The kitchen was closed. The late night desk clerk was nice enough to take us back to the employee vending machine just to get something to eat. I think it listed somewhere as a four-star hotel, but it didn't seem that it was actually four star and maybe more a three-star hotel but that might be the reason why they're updating and doing all the construction. They were doing quite a bit of construction which was badly needed to update the interior and exterior of this hotel. I was a little shocked at how outdated the room was regarding the fixtures and room treatments. It also smelled old and as if the dust settles often. I will say that the room was quite large but it was lacking in some of the main amenities that you would find in a more prestigious hotel. At the end of the day, it was an okay place just to rest for the night. The Wi-Fi was terrible and got worse the further down the hallway you got away from the central part of the hotel. We kept getting kicked off the Internet and maybe had one or two Wi-Fi bars sporadically throughout the evening. There aren't also a lot of places to eat around there and a lot of food delivery services don't deliver there either. It was nice to have free parking at least and like I said the night desk staff was really nice. The check out was easy as well.

The hotel and amenities were great! Clean, spacious rooms, pool/hot tub, restaurant, comfortable bar/lounge area. The surrounding town is small, but again, it was just what we were looking for on our journey. Loved it!

She helped us craft a thoughtful, flexible itinerary that included everything we wanted to see, along with some fantastic recommendations we wouldn't have discovered on our own. Aisling's attention to detail was second to none--she even helped us sort out car seats for the little ones and found us a bus to the airport at the very last minute. Her level of care and commitment was exceptional. Our bus driver was equally amazing--funny, knowledgeable, and incredibly accommodating. He easily adapted to the day-to-day changes in plans and made sure everyone, no matter the excursion, had a great time. His friendly nature made him an instant hit with the whole group (we had some pretty great karaoke sessions with him while we drove)! We truly couldn't have asked for a better experience. Fahy provided not just a service, but a level of care and personal attention that made our post-wedding adventure through Ireland seamless and magical. Sweet! This place is a restaurant/bar along with having multiple chalets for rent; whilst you can access it from the main road there is also a public jetty which you can use to pull up along side. Arriving on shore, there are a few chalets facing the shoreline, they look great! Tucked behind a few chalets, you have the restaurant! Asked for a table for 4, with a 30-45 minute wait, there is a small bar area which wasn't busy so we huddled up there and after a day on the lake, a well deserved drink was in order. Staff were very friendly and no sooner were we given a table :-) Everyone was raving about the half crispy duck so we surely ordered that, with me, I opted for the steak... The food was excellent, portioned to feed an army although after our active day, we made a sterling effort with everything. To start I had the French onion soup, was delicious. Next up was the steak, which I was not prepared for... The menu just says steak small or large, I said large thinking hey, 10oz maybe... Oh no, what felt like 100oz was served up with onions mushrooms along with garlic butter. Feast like I've never had before, protein sweats of the good kind ensued!

You can get off at Hodson Bay if you want and the boat that comes back out later in the day will bring you back in. It's good fun for kids. The staff are lovely and they will bring you a blanket if you get cold. They serve drink on this boat and tea/coffee. There is a tour guide. It's about an hour long. Nice tour to do on a sunny day. When you buy a ticket on the boat you get discounts into other tourist attractions.
