Lough Rynn…read moreCastle AKA that place where Brian O'Driscoll got married is a series of period buildings in a secluded estate which is conventiently not too far off the N4. While it can be lovely to stay in historic buildings there are also downsides. The original castle is not a very large building and so the hotel's 43 rooms are spread throughout a number of buildings, some of which are connected by corridors and some are not. There is, as yet, no pool, leisure centre or spa in the hotel, so services are limited. That is certainly not reflected in the price which was 175 for a regular room for one night. The rooms themselves are a lovely mix of old style and modernity, but there are some little things that might get on your wick. Our room was unconnected to the main hotel, which is contrary to what my friend was told when she booked the room. The was an electricity box in our room with elicted quite a loud hum, and our room looked out on the beautiful view of a building site (which will presumably be a pool some day)! The function room was in a modern building which is quite unobtrusive, but is a bit of a walk from the reception and lounge areas at the front of the hotel (although that probably depends on how high your heels are and how much you've had to drink/need to pee!). Pluses had to be the service, the food and the grounds. All of the serice staff were super friendly and accomodating. We were checking in for a wedding and had come straight from the church. The guy showing us to our room took pity on us in our high heels and drove us the 50 metres in a golf buggy! He even offered to let my friend drive after she expressed as her fervent wish - she chickened out unfortunately! The food is really good and both the dinner and the breakfast were excellent. If you have time take a walk in the beautiful walled gardens and take in the views of the lakes. There's also a nature trail which I didn't venture on due to lack of suitable shoes. A lovely place but a bit overpriced.

Gorgeous river!!…read more Our tour bus drove past it on the highway. Or as it's called in Ireland, the motorway! The river is so beautiful! It's pretty long too. We got to see the sun coming through the clouds and it was just breathtaking! This was taken at 10am in the morning. I can just imagine what it looks like at sunrise! Ooo I bet she's a sight!! :)

The location is simply sublime, however it's…read morequite hard to access - take care on the road leading to the Lodge, it's steep and the road leading from Castlebaldwin requires careful handling. Unfortunately on our first day here the weather was miserable. Thankfully our second day was decidedly better, giving us the opportunity to explore the surrounding locale and take in the view of Lough Arrow. The food on offer here was brilliant, each course better than the last. The red cabbage mash being the highlight of my meal. The duck thigh also deserves an honourable mention - tender, juicy and flavoursome. Would happily recommend Cromleach Lodge for a weekend stay - great food, wonderful surroundings and friendly staff.

Cashel is located about and hour and a half drive outside of Dublin, and although we did not spend much time there, it looks like a really cool old Irish town. We were joined by friends this time too, who also stayed three nights. We use the hotel as a base to tour Sligo, Mayo, Leitrim & Donegal hugging the speculator wild Atlantic way as much as we can. The value for money is terrific. We had a really comfy room with a cosy bed. We could control our own heat in room. We had in - room tea & coffee making facilities and tasty biscuits too. The one thing of note is they do things right here. Details do matter. Their coffees are excellent, their gin and whiskey selections are ace and the food is as good as it gets from scones and wheaten type bread to kippers. I had the crab claw main on the first night and this was just superb; perfectly cooked plump crab meat, punchy with great flavour. A pint of Guinness on the side made it all the more perfect. My companions had steak and chicken Maryland's and declared their food very tasty. On night two I had the prawns pil pil with ciabatta. It was fantastic. Proper North Atlantic prawns perfectly spiced, and a great portion. Once again companions went for chicken dishes and again they enjoyed their food too. When one considers the value for money and the super friendly staff it's five stars all the way.

The tour guide was easily the most knowledgeable guide we encountered during our trip and really made the experience come alive. He also had quite a few tips for other places in the country to check out. Really cool place for anyone with an interest in pre-Christian Ireland, I plan to return when it's not the dead of winter and I can actually go in the cave.
