It was crowded, but not so crowded that you were rubbing up against everyone else's sweaty bodies. Lots of bars, restaurants, and shops open late with added local vendors and food trucks. A great event for friends or families. Props to the city for having a fun, free music festival that I could see growing bigger and better in the future.

Over 100 bands in the 2 day festival for only $40 -$50 (depending on how far in advance you get the tickets) is a heck of a deal. Full days of well organized adventure is to be had. The line to get in is efficient, there are check-in stations at the stages that sync to social media, vendors and food trucks galore, a sweet smart phone app, you can sync your CC card with your wristband so your fanny pack will be lighter and SO much more! I'm pretty sure it's going to stick to the last weekend in July annually. Take an UBER ride to a fro to ditch having to find parking and enjoy bands of high caliber like Young The Giant, One Republic of past years and supremely local and regional shows, too!

We went on Sunday which has unlimited carnival rides for $30. You can purchase a stein when you first arrive to use for the rest of your day. There are lots of food vendors, 3 or 4 tents with spirits and then a bunch of larger tents for a variety of beer options, take a seat in the shade to eat or listen to music. There is a big vendor area as well. We went to the dachshund dash and parade which was fun. While there was quite a number of people, none of the lines were very long for food or beer so you could keep going to the next tent. It was a lot of fun to check out this event that started the Chicken Dance. Like any festival, you should expect to pay more than normal for food and drinks and all in good fun.

It was a very cool experience and one that I'll be adding to my annual Tulsa traditions. I was very impressed. The lineup was awesome. Fortune Feimster from Chelsea Lately and Monroe Martin completely killed it. We liked it so much and had such a great time that we decided to purchase tickets to the 10:30pm show. My cheeks were hurting from all the laughing and smiling! There was a short break in between which gave us plenty of time to grab something to eat and then come back. I did feel a bit frustrated because their electronic system was down so they ended up not even checking our tickets. Felt like anyone that attended the 8pm show could've easily just walked right back in. I wasn't a huge fan of the 10:30pm lineup mostly because of my taste in jokes I guess. I'm one of those people that believe some things are just not funny nor appropriate, like joking about rape, molestation or pedophiles... I think it's insensitive to those that have been through a traumatic experience like that and it can be misinterpreted by others as undermining the seriousness of it. I don't think it's acceptable to use that as a butt of a joke unless the comedian is actually a victim themselves and have gone through it firsthand. If that's how they cope or deal with it all, then that's their right but I didn't know if that was the case. Others didn't seem to mind...(rant over). The late show was definitely more "raunchy", dark and morbid, which is good to know now (maybe this is common knowledge?). I did enjoy watching Ron Funches though and overall it was a good experience.

The ad promised Chinese acrobats but they were nowhere to be found. There was a stage with three men on it with music playing as if it were a show but it looked more like the three blind mice. No choreography, no acrobatics, no skills. Maybe they were rehearsing? I'm not sure since there was no schedule of events. All that said, the lanterns were beautiful and I look at it as a once-in-a-lifetime thing.

I took my grand babies as part of a Christmas present to experience something different. Got there nothing was going and it was muddy , the inflatables was wet, no one at their tents and the food trucks wasn't open to feed my grand babies nor did they plan on opening. So basically i paid 90 and drove 2 hours of wasted time and gas to see some lanterns. Of course i was very upset went to a man name Stan and only asked for half my money back and he offered more tickets to come back which i turned down. Why would i take another chance of driving 2 hours to be disappointed again and from how things looked and ran i felt it would've been the same thing so i asked for a name and number. i missed last year so i had to make sure i didn't do the same this year. i went on saturday, which…read morehad a lot of panels going on that i didn't attend because i wanted to go straight to the actual gaming. when i went to the main room, i saw some of the booths & some were super dope. one in particular, sold all types of games, from nintendo to ps one. outside of checking out a couple of booths, once again, i went straight to where the games were & it took me back to childhood. i played games like alien vs predator, mike tyson's punch-out, tecmo super bowl, etc. i felt like a kid again. i was there for a couple of hours so i definitely got my hands on most of the games. for those who've missed it, try to make it next year. food, games, cosplay, panels, etc. basically, whether you're a hardcore gamer or just like to play games to pass time, this is the thing for you not to miss.

Specifically I played some Windjammers and Mario Golf, both awesome. On Saturday I came back out for the full experience. I think my favorite part is visiting with the game designers. Spoke with some folks from KC who were showing off a very cool origami iPhone game called ZenFold (check it out). They were telling me this is by far the best such Convention in the Midwest, that the city supports it a lot and they wish they had something anywhere near this good in Tulsa. Of course the costumes, laser tag and general nerdiness were fantastic as well. Definitely worth checking out. Also, Michael Jackson's Moonwalker has somehow aged both poorly and well at the same time.

As a kid, this holiday truly helped me grasp the concept of death and taught me not to be afraid of it, focusing instead on the celebration of life and the good memories of those that go before us. It's amazing to me to be able to find this here in Tulsa! Living Arts has been hosting this festival for over 20 years! Admission is $5 (cash only) and children 12 and under get in for free. The lineup for the festival is truly remarkable. It is an opportunity to showcase local, regional and international artistic talent. The most recent addition was Jorge Rojas performing his "Tortilla Oracle" - think Hispanic version of reading tea leaves (how awesome is that?!). Inside the gallery, you can walk around admiring the 50+ altars that were set up, the reading of the Calaveras, get your face painted to look like a catrina, get churros and champurrado, as well as witnessing the blessing of the altars. Outside, you can get yummy food, buy unique merchandise from the vendors and enjoy the wide array of music, dance, and other performers like: Interactive Puppet Theater with Flying Heart Theatre, Eleganza Musical: Latin ballads, Miguel y Los Coyotes: Caribbean Jazz & Latin fusion, Sol Azteca: Aunthentic Mexican dance, the Skeleton Parade, Braxus Santana: Santana Tribute Band, Tulsa Latin Style: Latin Jazz & Salsa, EkuBembe: Latin drummers & Latin fusion with Fire Dancers, Ballet Folklórico Tonátiuh, Hot Club: Gypsy & Flamenco, Mariachi Tulsa: Traditional & popular Mexican music and more! An incredible cultural experience that brings together people across Tulsa…read more Dia de Los Muertos is a combination of culture, art and celebration with a low entry fee ($5 donation) and a lot to see. The murals on the wall are repainted each year and celebrate death, those who have died and our interaction with death. While this could seem very morbid, Living Arts does a great job of making this event a celebration with food, drinks and plenty of opportunity to check out altars submitted by people from across town celebrating the lives of those lost in the last year. There are lots of booths to buy awesome handmade wares, local entertainment and a blessing of the altars with a priest and dancers moving through the altars. There are lots of kid friendly activities but this is also super fun for adults. I would highly recommend for anyone interested in cultural events and learning more about our city and the people in it!

i love that the mayfest event website described its 3rd weekend festivities of the new event every…read moreweekend format as showcasing local artists at the mother road market, and then when you arrive, there is no blocked off section with flashing lights or sign saying "here is local artist showcase", so there is a aspect of attendants setting the theme, which i'd interpreted as akin to "where is local art?" nonetheless, in the mix of restaurants, franchise branches and standalones alike, artisan stands, and even mini golf, all ongoing at the motherroad market, was a scattering showcase of local artists, in multiple mediums, including a cutout painting for taking photographs, drawing prints, and books. the cutout painting outside the northside entrance was so hilarious to me, getting a picture was no question. then, playing the waldoesque game of "where is the local art?" while appreciating the artistry of the gathering space and people around me, i'd located prints drawn of local landmarks and venues, both at an artisan booth on the gathering space southside and route 66 gift shop on the northside, that were quite appealing to me. and last but definitely not least, i came across a table booth for a book signing by the author of 'broke out of prison,' a book i'd saw previously from a social media post, and in addition to at the book signing table, also saw at least one copy for purchase at the motherroad route 66 gift shop. the author also had on display a daily devotional, and though i'm confident both books represent the calming, assuring energy the author effuses in real life, the latter may be a connecting read for some whom the title 'i broke out of prison' is unsettling. however, regardless if you can afford to buy a drawing print or book copy, the event is worth going to checkout the offerings local artists are displaying. further, the monthlong mayfest festival still has one more weekend, including a leadup tailgate event at the expo square sagenet center next saturday night, featuring musical guests, followed by the 'centennial cruise concert' downtown on sunday, 8am to noon, concluding the celebratory festival.

From being a consumer to being part of it, Mayfest has always given me a great experience. No matter how many times I come throughout the weekend, let alone visiting, I always got to have the Fried Pickles. Sometimes they're dill pickle chips, sometimes they're spears (I like the dill pickle chips more). I often do the same with Funnel Cakes & this year, I switched it up & got a Deep Fried Twinkie. I can't stop thinking about it. Mayfest is very local driven. It gives local artists (art + music) the opportunity to showcase their creations to a massive crowds. Installations, vendors, seminars, art galleries, multiple stages hosting musicians + DJs... A nice chunk of Guthrie Green (Downtown) is very active for the weekend. I enjoy it all every visit.
