We left Scotland's capital at about ten o'clock and took nearly 45 minutes to escape the city, primarily due to tour buses and commercial vehicles on the Royal Mile. But escape the capital we did, and once we passed the City Of Edinburgh Bypass, we suddenly found ourselves seemingly in the middle of nowhere. Quite the contrast to cities in America that seem to stretch out forever. The A702 took us through a series of towns, eventually depositing us in the village of Biggar, where it was time to refresh ourselves. Now, one would think this would be a perfect java experience. In the midst of rural Scotland on a very green country road, picturesque small town, quaint architecture. But something wasn't quite right - perhaps the cashier had had a bad start to her morning, but she just didn't seem too excited to be serving us. Perhaps it was our West Coast Accents. Perhaps it was because we knew what we wanted when we ordered. Or maybe she just sucked. Regardless, we didn't seem very welcome here, so we collected our order and proceeded south. The drinks we did get were adequate.

Still loving everything about this coffee shop! If I were local, this would be my go-to haunt (as…read moreit is, whenever I'm in Edinburgh, I take the train just to come here and then walk the beach). The large interior has an industrial vibe while still feeling warm and welcoming, the courtyard outside is a perfect place to enjoy some sunshine (the upstairs is only open on the weekend). Get a cold brew or an iced latte or an iced Americano with oat milk - it's so good! They also have a few bakery items, including a vegan banana bread that is DELICIOUS (one of the best I've ever had). It's a thick, moist slab loaded with nuts and dried cranberries maybe? There's just something "more" to it that makes it special. I recently bought beans (flavor notes of "jammy" and "honey"; it's SO GOOD), and it seems like I can reuse the canister for a discounted refill the next time I'm here! I believe they even grind them if you want. They also have some really cool merch (tote bags [I own], beanies, shirts, etc). #CoffeeAndSocialSolidarity

We came to North Berwick from Edinburgh for the day via a very easy 30 min train ride. Steampunk is located in the back of a building on the main street of North Berwick. It is sparsely decorated but the theme seems to be related to bicycles. We stopped in for midday iced lattes and a snack. The lattes were good and I appreciate their to go cups and straws are all paper based. The granola bar we grabbed did not impress me at face value but wow was it delicious. Like chewy granola with some cinnamon added in. It was the perfect sweet pairing to the latte. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating here.

Saturdays are really busy so was glad I decided last minute to book a table. The menu is filled with sandwiches, bagels, paninis etc and all come with soup for £5.95 which is a bargain when you see the portions. However the most popular order seemed to be the high tea for two, which at £5 per person is amazing! The atmosphere is lovely, with a mix of couple, familes and quite a few grannies being treated to tea and cakes by their grandkids. The decor is nothing fancy, but the setting and welcoming staff easily makes up for it There is fabulous selection of Suki teas and homemade baking. Soups of the day this week were tomato with basil and potato and leek. Last wee I tried the curried butternut squash which was amazing! The setting is lovely and the food is well worth the 15min drive from Dennistoun. There is a garden centre and lovely views onto the loch so you could easily spend a few hours over a coffee, chatting and escaping city life. I can't speak highly enough of this place and look forward to making myself a regular! https://www.facebook.com/pages/Tea-House-On-The-Loch/141357772588944?fref=ts
