Our family has multiple accounts with Schwab (for over 30 years) and we do almost everything online. After experiencing problems uploading documents on the Schwab portal, I decided to go to the branch in person to open a new, time-sensitive account. Although there was no other customer in the place, the hostile, unhelpful receptionist told me that no one there could help me and that I should go online. Great customer service! Within seconds, I located the nearest Fidelity branch on my phone - less than 1/4 mile away. Fidelity was more than happy to open the account on the spot and take my money. Hey Charles Schwab - you just lost a 30+ year customer with numerous accounts - we will be moving all of our accounts to Fidelity.

Confirmed they could handle walk-ins. Next day I visit branch and the very inhospitable receptionist was snotty, hit me with microaggressions and plainly said I could NOT talk with anybody. Two reasons: contrary to previous customer rep on phone, she said I needed an appointment. Then, after spending much time on locating my account (I didn't have acct no) I was informed they only dealt in person with accounts of $1 million or more (I was a Ameritrade customer but became Schwab customer upon latter buying former). I guess it never occurred to the Schwab higher ups that many investors spread their wealth and try not to park huge amounts in one location. I next went to a Fidelity branch office where they had no problem serving walk-ins, was not snobby and not discriminatory. Also no minimum account requirements. I will be transferring my holdings to Fidelity.

I've worked with Charles Schwab and other investment companies in the financial services industry, and the communication and follow through have been excellent. My poor experience with Diversified came when I tried to cash out some investments. I told the person on the phone that time was of the essence. He instructed me that my fastest turnaround would be if I followed their instructions for doing Direct Deposit into my account. I followed their instructions to a T, and the transaction somehow failed. Only, Diversified didn't bother to communicate to me that it had failed. Rather than looking for some quicker alternative knowing that I had requested that this be handled quickly, they just decided to put a check in the mail without communicating anything to me. I wasn't even where they mailed my check to, so that only prolonged the time to get the money into my account. When I called back to find out the status of my funds and became aware that a check had been mailed, I asked them why they had not communicated anything to me, and all the guy on the phone would tell me was that they "don't communicate with clients about direct deposits." I said, "Fine, don't communicate with me about a direct deposit, tell me you're mailing me a check. Tell me what the next fastest alternative to a direct deposit is. Tell me anything, so I know what's going on." These people are idiots. Do you want to trust someone who can communicate about a simple transaction with your life savings? Do you want to deal with these kind of headaches?
