The owner, Dave, and his staff are top notch, the food is very good. Seriously, the best chips (fries for us Yanks) I've ever had. Similarly, their steak and ale pie will cause you to question your previous favorite. The Buccleuch is an eighteenth century coach house that has been brought up to a modern standard, and while you don't have to be a motorcyclist to enjoy this place, if you are a motorcyclist, this place will delight you. Secure parking, access to whatever you need, and Dave's knowledge of local roads is encyclopedic. He came up with a route for us that would get us north without slogging through Glasgow traffic, then loaded it in my friend's satnav. Great local roads too!

The reception is clean and tidy, the lady on reception over my stay was very friendly and helpful, she actually showed an interest in my reasons for my stay. There is a vending machine within the hotel if you get peckish or thirsty. Each room is well equiped with tea and coffee making facilities and TV's. There is ample parking outside and the hotel is next to the Solway Gate which is fantastic. This is an excellent priced hotel where kids stay free. The only downside is the hotel does not offer air-conditioning.

I was just married yesterday and the whole event was seamless. All of my guests had a great time and enjoyed every aspect of the wedding- from the owl ring delivery to the fireworks in the evening. Many claimed it was the best wedding they have ever attended. I enjoyed myself and the day was virtually stress free. Lilly, Deborah and Sarah were so willing to bend over backwards to make sure my day was perfect. All of the servers and bartenders were also on point. Our bartender was providing scotch education to guests and many of my guests really enjoyed this. Even after the dancing ended, the evening manager went out of his way to make sure guests were fed and happy. He even made us cheese bread when the sandwiches were consumed. I would highly highly recommend Auchen Castle. You won't be dissapointed!

The rooms are adequate to large in size, with good-sized en-suite bathrooms (shower or shower/bath). Decor is kept in good order and cleanliness is good. Adam oversees the kitchen, with a focus on locally-produced food resulting in excellent hearty breakfasts (featuring full Scottish, kedgeree, kippers, smoked haddock and toast from bread made on the premises) and high-quality evening meals (very good seasonal game and fish) served either informally in the bar or in the restaurant, both with fires in the colder months. The wine list is well-chosen, with something to appeal to almost every pocket and palate. Among the many things that make the Trigony unique are the home-baked shortbreads in the rooms, the artisanally-made toiletries and the views of red squirrels in the garden. Only reason we eventually had to go was because I was dog sitting. There was a wedding on. What more can you want - a lovely afternoon tea and a fashion show!

It looks like a small castle when you are approaching it as it has a turret of the front of it and has extensive gardens to walk in if you are staying. There are 2 restaurants to choose from, a formal dining room and a more relaxed area for families. They also cater for small private functions. The staff are helpful and friendly and the hotel itself is spotlessly clean. It has a traditional but welcoming atmoshphere. There is ample parking available and can be easily accessed by diabled patrons.

It's $65 per person, so definitely more of a treat, but it felt worth it. We started with sandwiches -- about six per person. They were fresh and decent (we skipped the ham options), nothing extraordinary but a good start. Then came the pastries... oh my god. Absolutely the highlight. Delicate flavors, beautifully presented -- they genuinely felt like little works of art. Tea and coffee were unlimited, which I really enjoyed, and the serving staff were incredibly sweet and attentive throughout. A really charming experience, especially for the ambiance and desserts.

On the positive side, the rooms were very comfortable, some offering nice views. Breakfast and the breakfast service were both fantastic -- a real highlight of our stay. That said, after spending several weeks in Italy following this stay -- across five different cities -- I can honestly say that each offered a higher level of service and guest satisfaction. New Lanark is a village designed by Robert Owen, an industrial revolutionary who wanted to give his workers a safe place to live and work and to halt the exploitation of children. He ran mills which have now been converted into an interactive museum, a visitor centre and a hotel. We booked the hotel for our wedding reception (we had the meal in the function room in the hotel then moved over to the Institute in the Vistor Centre for the ceilidh as there was more room). Had a few worries because there is a noise limiter in the hotel function room and there was the possibilty that one may be installed in the Institute room and our band wouldnt play if there was one , but that didnt come to anything. They also cocked up some of the room bookings for our guests who were staying, but all of the staff were extremely apologetic and gave us room upgrades and smoothed everything out. On they day though, they were excellent. I can totally recommend Lee, who made the day run like clockwork and also Helen at the Institute for being so accommodating and for putting on a fab spread for our evening guests! The food was very good, much better than I expected from a hotel wedding with 120 odd guests having a sit down meal (it should have been good given the price, but I often think that wedding food in that kind of venue can be mediocre at best!) The wedding packages as always were quite expenisve so we just paid per head for the meal. We transported some of our flowers from the church windows to use as centrepieces for the tables, we had our own piper, we didnt bother with different coloured linen, we brought our own wine and paid corkage (bought from the Wine Society), so we managed to save a bit on the package which had stuff in it we didnt need or want. I must say though that they were really flexible with substituing and negociating the packages, so if you had your own piper you could swap to include canapes or something of similar "value". We just had too many things ourselved to warrent the package and to warrent the substitutions. Wonderful day - ran like clockwork (though I did end up being a little late!) but thoroughly recommend NLM
