First Baptist Church of High Point, North Carolina is the church I grew up going to, beginning in…read morethe mid-1980s. When I was a child, our family was pretty active in the church. My sisters and I would go to Sunday school and meet up with our parents afterwards at worship service (as a child, that was the boring part). My grandfather, who was a pastor (now retired), even led worship at an event one evening. I no longer live in High Point, but my parents still do and they continue to be members of the church. Since moving away, I've returned to the church intermittently over the years. Most recently, I listened to a sermon from and met the current Senior Minister Dr. Joel Campbell. My Sunday school teacher, Carol, still sings in the choir. First Baptist Church of High Point was founded in 1825. It's located in downtown High Point and has a spacious parking lot (growing up, my dad always liked to park on the street in front of the church). Unlike bigger churches, there are no parking or traffic issues here. Getting in and out is really easy. This is a small church, but it's not tiny. On my last visit, the congregation size looked about the same as, perhaps even smaller than, what I remember in the 90s. The inside and outside of the church look pretty much exactly the same as I remember, even down to the chandeliers. The worship service format is similar and it still includes the portion for kids. The pastors I remember most were Dr. Lamar King, Dr. Hoke Coon (interim pastor), and Dr. Bill Slater. Of course, I also remember Rev. Bruce Hartgrove, the Minister of Music, who is one of the longest-tenured at the church. I went to the same high school, High Point Central, as his son Josh, who is also a musician. Bruce led worship service sometimes. These days, you don't even have to leave your house to watch worship services. The church has done a great job with its website and Facebook page. I felt welcome at this church and have many memories here. We used to always sit up in the balcony for worship service. I always felt very peaceful and relaxed at worship service. We used to dress up to go to church (suit and tie), but these days the dress code is casual.
