UPDATE: After posting my original review, I did some digging because I genuinely couldn't believe this was considered acceptable customer service. What I found made my experience make much more sense. Not only are there numerous reviews from other customers describing nearly identical encounters, including being aggressively confronted over taking photos, being made to feel unwelcome, and leaving without making a purchase because of the owner's behavior.... there are also public records showing the owner, Brenda Lee Combrink, was arrested in 2003 following a dispute with law enforcement after insisting customers be removed from a public area at her previous antique shop in Florida. Reading that, then experiencing what I did firsthand, was honestly unsettling. If you're visiting Boothbay on vacation, my advice is simple: protect your peace and spend your money at one of the many other local businesses that actually appreciate their customers. The last thing anyone wants while on vacation is an unnecessary confrontation over something as harmless as existing in a store or taking a quick selfie without any posted policy prohibiting it. Some cute items, but save yourself your own time and respect and don't go in here!! The nastiest owner you will ever meet!

Apparently taking a picture of a mannequin is a terrible offense. Should be negative stars... My husband and I walked in, and I started to take a quick photo of a mannequin to send to a few friends. An employee ( I'm assuming the owner) shouted that photos weren't allowed. Fair enough--I didn't know the policy (no photos or signs seen amongst the crowded walls and shelves). I immediately put my phone away and simply said, "Oh." That could have been the end of the interaction, but miserable people like to carry on. Instead, she continued with, "Most stores around here will charge you or worse for taking a photo!" It was unnecessarily rude and patronizing. She was being very kind to me according to...no one but herself. Time to add a new sign out front, arguably the most important one, "NO PHOTOS of our haunted antiques and dusty clothes! You will berated or worse." Needless to say, our business wasn't wanted and we left shortly afterward. Interestingly, none of the other stores we visited that day treated customers this way. They managed to enforce their policies without making people feel unwelcome. I also noticed a pattern in the reviews from other customers--especially younger women--describing similarly unpleasant interactions. Based on our experience, I can understand why. If your goal is to make customers feel like they're doing something wrong the moment they walk in, mission accomplished. Watch out (ladies)! Owner was rude. I was looking at the racks of clothes (they are very crammed and full) when the owner came over to me and instructed me how to shop... she did this more than once. She told me to look at the clothes by "grabbing the hanger and not the shirt itself." I was very interested to look in here and was hoping to buy something but I ended up walking out when she began giving me demands. Everything is overpriced too. Not sure how this place is still open when she scares off customers and doesn't seem to be making very many sales. read more

Very interesting items. However, I was about to take a picture of something my mother might like for a gift and the Karen FINAL BOSS appeared out of nowhere saying that she charges for photos. I asked if there was a sign that notified customers of this, and she said that there was not. It was a very off-putting experience that dissuaded me from making a purchase. Owner/shop proprietor told my friends and I we couldn't have our drinks in the store, so we politely left, put caps on our bottles, and then put them in our bags before coming back inside. There were no signs posted saying no drinks, but whatever. Then she scolds my friend for taking a photo despite there being no signs that say that's prohibited. Then she scolds me for touching the clothing. Literally. For touching clothing she was selling and I liked and considered purchasing. That's when my friends and I left. After my experience and reading the rest of these reviews, I think the local chamber of commerce should probably find a way to force her out before she scares off more tourists and paying customers. One interaction with her will taint your friendly image this of this lovely small town. Relatively good pickings ruined by the rudest proprietor I've ever seen. The Karen-est Karen ever to walk the earth. I was asked multiple times if I needed help finding anything; I suspect she either wanted to annoy me until I left or firmly believed I was going to start shoplifting (probably due to my t-shirt and piercings.) Was yelled at for photography (which no sign anywhere said was prohibited) and threatened with extra charges if I actually took any photos; was also carrying a water bottle, another couple who came in were yelled at for carrying drinks and I managed to hide mine. Proprietor was also very abusive toward her husband, who I believe she was on the phone with (I didn't stay to find out.) The list continues, not least of which is that this woman has the audacity to use her own photograph as a profile picture to leave a disingenuous five-star review for her own mediocre store. It's an old photo and she's gone rather gray since then, but it's undoubtedly her; the account seems like it was created purely to leave a great review of her own store and trash-talk another store in the area. She isn't fooling anyone. Truly an awful human being. In short, stay away at all costs. Everything is incredibly overpriced with zero room to bargain, and I've heard that some of them weren't acquired legally. It's not worth it. read more

...took a photo to go find the shop owner to ask her if she knew how much the piece was off the top of her head (which, in my opinion, is pretty common practice, or at least i've never had an issue with it as a very seasoned shopper) and she was rude about not taking photos, which i see i'm not the first customer to have experienced that... the item was ridiculously overpriced anyways. I like to give people grace and the benefit of the doubt, and really don't like to leave bad reviews, but seeing that I'm not the only one with this experience I just thought I'd corroborate with the others. VERDICT: AVOID! There are so many cute stores with friendly owners in Boothbay, there is literally NO reason to go inside. PRO: - The exterior as you walk by. Honestly, the best way to enjoy this business is just to keep walking and enjoy all the nautical items (crammed) around the entrance. CONs: - Store owner: Rude, condescending, and negative "Karen". - Store layout: cramped. Looks like there was a nice display at one point - and then the owner just added twice the (dated) inventory. - Prices: Overpriced. absolutely terrible customer service. the woman behind the desk seems to enjoy yelling at people and talking to you like a child considering that they dont have a single sign anywhere in the store stating no pictures, but she will watch you like a hawk until you do something that she considers "rude" such as taking a picture of a uranium glass necklace to show your sister who you couldnt find at the moment. she also claims that she will charge you for pictures or "ruin your day" and that there are apparently many other places that will do that around boothbay, however every time i've asked it's been fine and every other store has signs posted where they don't want pictures taken. they don't deserve your money at all and should go out of business considering how they speak to customers. read more

My husband and I went to this antique shop and when we were walking in, the owner rudely told us to get out because we had drinks. They had no sign whatsoever saying we couldn't drink in the store, and we would have followed the rules had we known. No need to bark at us. My daughter accidentally browsed too close to behind the register and was rudely addressed by the owner warning her to not be there. My daughter quickly put down what she was looking at and moved away as she had honestly not realized that she'd gotten to a spot she shouldn't have been but was once again rudely addressed by the owner. We immediately left. Wouldn't return or recommend as there are so many other nearby stores that are far more welcoming and provide a pleasant experience. read more

don't go here. me and my partner were browsing the (cheap looking) earrings section and made a comment to each other about the pricing when the shop owner came over and explained how they're made with "Austrian crystals". She was patronizing to my partner to a point where we walked out. This place has cute stuff, but the owner sucks and it smells weird in there.
