Certainly the transport in Dublin could be better especially i am sorry to say on the northside which does not have the benefit of the Luas and now will never seemingly have the metro but losing buses from the city just is not going to answer that problem and so few of the buses even go anywhere near my job anymore so i have no choice but to use my car. The 83 bus trip has become a bit of an around the world because recently they got rid of the number 19 bus and now the 83 has tried taking in its route too which means you are sitting on the bus while it goes up and down extra roads which were not previously on the route but at least they have free wifi on the buses so now you can spend time checking out what is going on in the rest of the world.

The announcement for each stop is clear and it doesn't cost too much to ride. My only wish is that there would be better markings as to where the stops are located and how to get to the stop's main attraction after you get off. For the Dundrum Shopping Center, for example, I had to follow the crowds and guesstimate as to where the mall was located, since it wasn't apparent from the signs near the Luas. Also, it is closer to get off at the Balally stop than the Dundrum stop so would have been nice to know that as well.

My flight arrived early and I managed to catch an earlier bus which was a lifesaver as it was cold and I wanted to get to Galway to see the Xmas Market. The driver was very helpful with my baggage and advising about the walk to the hotel in Galway once we arrived. Everyone on the bus was friendly and it soon filled up with shoppers in the Dublin town centre stop. I didn't use the toilet but there is one and other passengers used it. The return trip was just as good, friendly driver again, and the bus was quite empty so plenty of room to spread out. I would definitely recommend the GoBus service, it is competitively priced, easy to get to in both Dublin Airport and in Galway, easy to book and pay for online and as a solo female traveller it felt extremely safe and friendly.

Luckily I had my LEAP card already and all I had to do was tap my card to the reader and jump on ... with the 1,000 other people cause this is the first/last stop on the Green LUAS line and it was evening rush-hour. Maps of the system, both in English and Irish, are near each train door and an automated voice calls out the next and arriving stations at the right time so it was definitely helpful cause looking out the window was difficult with the loads of people on-board as well as me having no clue where I was heading as it was my first time that far south of the city center. Trains arrive/leave this central location pretty often and it's very open-aired and right across the street from St. Stephen's Green ( a park ) in Dublin 2. Get your shopping or drink on, walk to this station and "Get Out of Dodge" quickly and easily.

It is a start/end destination so you would expect some delay but I have not experienced it being on it at all times of the day, which is pretty impressive. The maps in the train are clear and the information on where you are and the stops are also very clear. It is always easy to take the LUAS. The station is as any other station for LUAS but here you just a bit better view as the neighbor is St. Stephen's Green. The station is also very conveniently located at the end of Grafton Street so it is easy access to the city center of Dublin 2 as long as you do mind walking a mile or a miles and a half.

The security staff ACTIVELY look for tourists who are unaware that the trams that run on rails in…read morethe streets require riders to tap their Leap card on a card reader at the tram stop before boarding the tram vs on the tram itself (unlike the busses and trains) and to tap again when they get off. Failure to do this may earn you a €45 fine or even €100. My wife and I asked two black clothed tram security workers if we were at the correct location for the destination we wanted. They said yes and asked us if we had Leap cards. We did and we showed them. Once on board the tram and underway, they scanned our cards and said we owed a €45 fine for not tapping in before we boarded. There's no lienency or grace. It seems the Luas system is designed to ensnare the unsuspecting and ignorant tourists to make up for the real scofflaws that don't pay for rides. Ireland and it's people were awesome except for the those that conspired to create and operate the Luas Leap card system and it's zero tolerance policy around tapping in and tapping out. The tram riding process isn't well documented in public. It might be online but I didn't procure my card so I can't comment on that. My advice, walk. It's better for all aspects of your health vs letting a little Luas infect you.

The train operator for the Republic of Ireland with its main hub in Dublin but spokes leading out to much of the Republic. I did not take any of the long distance trains, just commuter hops on the line between Connolly Station and Maynooth (Maigh Nuad in Gaelic). Most of the time, the trains were on time. Smooth running, clean, efficient, with wifi on board. Never completely crowded except the rush hour schedule which is understandable. I did once almost miss a train because it's nearly time to depart but the track is empty. I learned from one of the staff in Connolly Station that the app might indicate one track number (in this case, Track 4) but the displays in the station show a different track number (Track 7). Arrived at the Dublin Airport in Ireland after more than 24 hours of travel, missed connections…read moreand missing bags. To say that we were already unhappy would be an understatement, but in an effort to get our vacation off to a happier restart, we opted to travel with Irish CityLink to make our way from the Dublin Airport to Limerick where our hotel was waiting. We met a lovely airport employee who helped us find the correct Zone (Zone 10 for those of you who will be coming this way and need to get from Dublin Airport to Limerick) and managed to find the right bus stop, but unfortunately had just missed the 8PM bus. Although we were told by numerous people in the airport that we could just pay the bus driver and travel, with the 10PM being the last bus heading to Limerick and it being a Friday night, we decided to book fares for myself and my husband just to be sure we had seats. That's where the trouble began: the site wasn't working and reservations weren't possible (verified by several people we talked to that were all having challenges trying to make reservations), asked one of the drivers for Zone 9 for some help who didn't seem to be very knowledgeable or didn't want to take the time to assist (weren't sure which is was), and was chastised by a baggage handler who to told us to make a reservation and then and wished us good luck and told us to we should be better organized when we told them their site wasn't working. I'm guessing customer service isn't their strong suit since their offices were closed and their people are empowered to help. We ended up taking Flight-Link to a town pretty close to Limerick and then took a an Uber to our hotel. So far, not impressed with the customer service or food in Ireland yet! Will keep you posted.
