Event: 25th anniversary celebration Mission: To surprise…read morethe couple with a Flash Mob Dance !! About a month ago, I talked to a lovely lady named Marty about using the lighthouse for our flash mob dance. She seemed as excited about the idea as we were! She went out of her way to help us with this project. We asked if we could go up into the lighthouse to film it from up above. But there was some construction going on. She actually talked to the construction workers to see when they were going to be inside to try to make it ready for us to go up! So when the day came, Marty was there to greet us and show us how to get up to the top of the tower. She even stayed to watch our crazy group of friends stream out from behind the lighthouse and dance to a special song for our special couple. We had an absolute blast! And Marty was a big help! Everyone at Fairport Harbor seems to really want to contribute to the community vibe and make sure that everyone feels welcome. We're very thankful to have such a beautiful lighthouse and beach and friendly folks in Fairport

There was a really cool ship like room with all the old controls around the room to give the feeling of piloting a boat. Seeing the original fresnel was also pretty memorable. But best of all was the lighthouse itself. It was a steep and narrow spiral staircase climb up to the top. Breathtaking views up there and we were able to walk around the circular deck at the top, it made me a bit dizzy so went back down. The climb back down was a little harrowing but there is a tall to hold onto and it was fine, Glad we went!

James Garfield was one of the Ohio presidents and he was assassinated in his first year in office…read more His house in Mentor is the one where he lived and from which he ran his front porch campaign for presidency in 1880. You start your visit at the visitor center. There you can check in for a visit in the Garfield house which is only accessible with a free guided tour. While waiting, you can explore the exhibition about President Garfield's life and visit the gift shop. President Garfield's life is an American rags to riches story. His father died when he was two and he was raised by his mother in poverty. For this he was mocked and bullied, which made him very sensitive. He left home at age 16 and went to work on a canal boat in Cleveland, managing the mules. In 1858 he married Lucretia Rudolph, and they had seven children, five of whom survived infancy, four boys and a girl. Therefore, the family needed a big house, and in 1876 Garfield purchased the Lawnfield estate in Mentor and its house, which was expanded and restored many times both during his life and after his assassination. The house has since been restored to its original color. On the property you can also visit his 1880 campaign office, which was originally his library, and see the windmill, which pumped water into the faucets, bathrooms, and laundry rooms of the house. The beautiful house is a remarkable and great part of the Ohio and American history. You also enjoy the original decoration and furniture of the house. The dining room is set as a replica of the festive dinner the Garfield family ate to celebrate the news that James had been elected president. When you are in the area, remember also to visit the James A. Garfield Memorial at Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland.

I learned a lot about politics in the late 1800's. Things have certainly changed. The James A Garfield National Historic Site is a treasure trove of history. The home is fabulous. Thanks to a generous 1934 gift from the Garfield children to the Western Reserve Historical Society, we can see the home as it looked when the Garfields lived there, complete with original furnishings and artwork. Transferred in 1980 to the National Park Service, we now can all enjoy this amazing home and its history by taking a tour. Lucretia Garfield was an extraordinary woman ahead of her time. After her husband was assassinated, she created a memorial library in the home, to preserve his books and presidential papers. The library included a fireproof vault to protect important documents. I loved the architectural details, coordinating wall paper, light fixtures, and the thoughtful touches that turned the lovely house into a home. I'd have happily paid for this excellent tour, but it was FREE. Honestly, I could go on and on. Definitely RECOMMENDED!

It was like stepping into a time warp, and the nostalgic atmosphere brought back so many memories of visiting my grandmother's house when I was growing up. The tour itself is fairly short, and I will admit it's a little pricey for the amount of time you spend there. That said, I'm still glad we went. Seeing the actual house up close was a unique experience, and the museum next door was filled with fun artifacts, memorabilia, and behind-the-scenes items that made the visit even more worthwhile. A special shoutout to our tour guide, who recommended lunch at the Rowley Inn right across the street. We stopped in after the tour, and it was absolutely delicious. It ended up being the perfect way to round out the experience. If you're a fan of the movie, I definitely recommend stopping by both the Christmas Story House and the Rowley Inn. Even with the short tour, the nostalgia alone made it worth the visit!

Their family home is the main draw, and it looks exactly as it did in the film complete with the major award in the window. I was told people lived here and eventually gave up due to privacy, now it's available to rent to stay for short times! Next door is the bully's house as well, with a museum and welcome center across the street. Street parking is plentiful, they have a small dedicated lot at the store. There are lots of great restaurants and pubs nearby too.

Cafe is also definitely geared more towards the kids tastes compared to other museum cafes in the area, which makes sense. Lots of chicken tenders, grilled cheese, burgers, etc. Some of the animals outside did seem kind of anxious, which made me feel a little sad for them. Lots of pacing. However I think it may be because it was their feeding time.

I've been to my fair share of natural history museums, and while this one is compact, it is very modern and packs a punch! When you enter, you're immediately greeted by a giant dinosaur and that set the tone for the whole visit, I felt like I kept seeing dinosaur bones everywhere! It took me a moment to orient myself to the museum layout, but looking back it's pretty compact and I could've easily wandered and enjoyed most of the museum in a couple hours. I especially enjoyed how interactive the earth section was, and this is silly but sit on those rock-looking cushions - they are SO comfortable! The little planetarium area was also very cool, and I would consider seeing a show in there next time! The dioramas are by far the most beautiful/engaging I've seen, and with between the fish video cave and the outdoor animal area, I felt like I also got a mini trip to the aquarium and the zoo. Overall I had an amazing time and this spot is super baby/toddler friendly! Note: If you have ASTC membership, admission is included! As a non museum member, I'd recommend street parking. It's much cheaper than the flat rate garage fare.
