I enjoyed about two hours at the Fire Museum, viewing fire trucks, viewing photographs of the fire department's largest incidents, seeing memorabilia and fire equipment. I lucked out and one of your volunteers kicked off the "fire" video. Super interesting but honestly, a quick hit with a fire extinguisher would have saved a lot of drama. It's not the largest fire museum I've been to - the Hall of Flame in Tempe probably - but it's interesting and there is much to see and experience here. Well worth the time. Outstanding museum for kids. The first section of the museum is a collection of firefighting equipment throughout history: fire trucks, hoses, masks, extinguishers, etc. This section also includes a corny but helpful video about when to call 911 and a display with hundreds of fire truck toys. There is a tour guide (retired firefighter) to lead visitors through the first half of the museum and answer questions. Older children and adults will find this part of the museum interesting, but what makes the Memphis Fire Museum exceptional is the second half, where children are free to explore a completely interactive room of fire truck and ambulance vehicles. On the second floor there is a fire simulator where visitors can watch (and feel the heat!) from a simulated house fire. On a Tuesday around 1pm, we pretty much had the museum to ourselves. I'm sure this isn't always the case, but frankly all of Memphis felt a little abandoned. It appears as though the city hasn't yet recovered post-COVID. We paid $46 for our family of 8 to visit the museum (but the baby was free) and I think it was worth every penny. I'm not sure how impressed a group of adults would be with the museum, but it's worth a trip for anyone with kids. Do go! read more

Being that my boyfriend is a retired fireman, we always look for these types of places when we travel. With that being said, this museum is the most impressive one we've been to so far. All of the interactive areas and demonstrations for the kids are amazing. The old fire trucks on display, the historical information they have listed, the 9/11 tribute which is incredibly touching... we were incredibly impressed with the lay out, the items.. just everything. This will be one of our favorites and we will probably be back on a return trip to Memphis. read more

In October 1998, the Fire Museum of Memphis opened in the old Fire Station 1 that was originally built in 1910. The City of Memphis had experienced an unusually high fire fatality rate for several years. In 1992 alone, the fire fatality rate was nearly two and one half times the national average. The Memphis Fire Department needed a solution for this life threatening situation. Their answer was to create not just a fire museum housing its rich history, but to impact the fire problem through the creation of an institute for learning and teaching fire and life safety. We went to years ago the day before my sons scheduled surgery and they made it the most special experience for him. They weren't busy so we were able to enjoy everything about the place! They even brought out one of the dogs for my son to see and he loved every second of it. read more

The Fire Museum of Memphis is a good place to learn about fire safety and to have a fun time. I enjoyed playing the games they had there, and also loved the activity where we had to feel the door handles to see if they were hot. My only problem is that when I went there, some of the things were dirty and/or out of order. Other than that, I love this place. read more

Fire museum? Whhhaaaaat? Talk about a lil future firefighter's dream museum! I don't have kids but if I did have kids, I would come here all of the time. But let me be clear - only come here if you have kids. Because let's face it...you might be a wee disappointed since 90% of the displays are catered to kids. That being said (and probably due to the fact that I am a giant kid), I had a blast. I got there early (9:00 am) on a Tuesday and since I was the first one on that freezing day, I had the pleasure of getting a private tour with Mr. Bobo (I hope I'm spelling that right). He was a delight! So informative and answered all my questions. Plus he thought it was funny that I wanted to push all the buttons on the displays like a kid...oh and I felt super safe riding in an elevator with him when I normally take the stairs because he was a firefighter...and they know how to get you out of stuck elevators. I know, it sounds crazy but I'm claustrophobic and usually take the stairs...I don't care how many flights up. My favorite thing? The firetrucks! I mean, firetrucks from the olden days! Firetrucks that make you wonder how they could even fight fire because they're so pretty...and old timey. Did you know the first fire trucks were dragged by men? (Yikes, I wouldn't want that job...because I could barely hold my backpack as a kid.) The kids will love the talking horse in the 100 year old firehouse (now museum) that also holds an interactive ambulance and fire truck. There is also a fire room that simulates what a house fire is like...scary!! The whole experience is very informative and interesting...kids need to learn this stuff - it can save lives! The Fire Museum of Memphis is a great place to take your kids for a little bit of fun and education. Inside you'll find a history of firefighting in Memphis, complete with antique fire trucks. They even have a real truck available for kids to run around on and pretend to be real firefighters. There's a Fire Room which simulates an actual burning house- surfaces get hot and alarms go off. You can walk your child through the basic steps taught in fire safety. The Escape Maze shows how to get out of a house fire in the safest way possible. We went to a birthday party there, and I bought plastic fire helmets for all of the kids from the gift shop. So cute to see a roomful of mini-firefighters running around. read more

Fan-friggin-tastic! This is a great museum for kids of all ages and adults to learn about how to survive and escape a fire and also check out the long, interesting history of the Memphis Fire Department (one of the largest and busiest FDs in the US). It's also a great place for kids to climb around and play on fire apparatus, slide the fire pole and try on the turn-outs (firefighting clothes). The local newspaper here in Memphis, The Commercial Appeal, had an article about a young child who escaped and help their family escape from a house fire. When asked how they knew what to do, the child told the reporter that they learned what to do on a field trip to the Fire Museum. If that isn't worth five bucks, I don't know what is! I took my friend's son here this past week on an afternoon of babysitting. He's quite the fire fighter fan and is enamored by anything in the way of fire fighting. I was surprised to find he had never been here before- and his experience and the looks on his face were seriously priceless. There's quite a history lesson to be found here in the way of fire fighters in Memphis. My child was most impressed by the real, antique trucks. As an adult- I will state that the cool factor was not lost on me either. He had a field day in the child's version of the truck. Yes, they allow a place for the kids to get out all their pent up fire fighting instincts after the tour. I literally had to tear him away. The craziest of all the experiences to be had here? The fire room. It reminded me of the movie Ladder 49 when Joaquin and his fellow fighters were lead into the smokey fire simulator room. Regardless, they walk you and your guests through the steps of fire safety and how to get out of a fire engulfed building. read more

Great for kids, wonderful displays, $10 per adult is really steep! If you are an adult going with the intention of seeing the displays, might want to call ahead and find out when the place isn't teaming with childeren. We left after a brief visit because it was a circus. I took my three year old for a birthday party this weekend and had so much fun! We have been here as a family before but never for a party. The boys had a blast playing on the firetrucks, sliding down the fire pole and putting on the fire hats and jackets. They provide a nice sized party room for cake and presents too. I am a FF from East Point, GA. I visited this place and was actually floored. It was tastefully done. From the outside for the monument dedicated to the FF that died on 9-11 to the inside which goes back in time to their first fire dept. to their first black officers. I truly enjoyed the site. The whole tour took about an hour and 1/2 if you read all the important stuff. We even got a parking spot right in front of the building. If you are a FF this is a plce you surely would not want to miss. read more

This place is awesome. $10 cover for myself and my five year old. You're in and out in under an hour. Lots of old-time fire trucks and equipment for the kids. Did I mention this place does birthday parties??? The staff is beyond friendly and accommodating, and there is plenty of space for the kids to run around.
