Popped inside this cute yarn shop for the first time to get some clarity on a new project I wanted to start and hopefully purchase some yarn and needles. I unfortunately had the WORST customer service from the cashier which entirely turned me off from wanting to buy anything. It seemed as though my questions were bothering the cashier and I received a very hostile attitude from them overall in our conversation; to be frank, it left me wanting to run and hide (to preface--I have never ever felt this way before shopping in the city)! I ended up leaving that store feeling quite terrible about myself and pretty stupid for asking anything at all. While I thought that a neighborhood yarn shop would be the perfect place to get recommendations and advice as a newer knitter, this store is apparently not the place for that. It's a shame, too, since the products looked beautiful. Will probably not come back. read more

This yarn store had a pretty wide variety of yarn and lots of great notions. One of the things I loved was their project bags; I got one with a picture of a chicken knitting on top of a pile of yarn. They had a couple different types of cascade yarn which is my go to. When I checked out, the cashier went the extra mile and double checked the dye lots and even went into the back to get yarn from the same dye lot. I cannot thank them enough! read more

There's always such an incredible variety of yarns and you can tell how excited everyone is when they're about to drop a new product line or colorway! I don't know what it is, but I've been in more than one local yarn store that provided lackluster (and sometimes downright poor) customer experiences. Firebird is not that, not even close. Every time I go there, there's someone willing to help me, and the advice they provide is always helpful. The store is bright, clean, and highly organized. They specialize in hand-dyed animal fibers, and I'm especially wowed by their inventory of sock/fingering yarns. They do tend to run on the pricier side, but honestly, they carry so much local yarn and I find so much here that I can't find anywhere else that I'm willing to pay those prices, especially with their customer service. I just visited Firebird Yarns for the first time during the 2025 Yarn Crawl. This amazing yarn shop on Haight Street is an absolute dream for fiber enthusiasts! The selection is incredible--beautiful hand-dyed skeins, luxurious natural fibers, and a stunning range of colors and textures. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and so cool. Firebird Yarns is my favorite local yarn shop! I'm an intermediate knitter and wanted to try some projects with hand-dyed yarns, so I've gone in several times to check out their selection. They have absolutely GORGEOUS colorways, and their employees are exceptionally helpful and lovely to talk to! They've helped me with everything from choosing the right kind of yarn for my projects, to teaching me how to wind skeins into cakes. Whenever I go in, I feel so inspired and supported in my projects, and the staff really makes it special. Great selection of yarn, small selection of needles but they do have some (near the register). They also have a winder and I heard them helping someone while I was checking out so they definitely help folks use this. My son was helping me find the colors for some Pokemon amigurumi he wants me to make (of course in shiny colors) so he wanted allll the yarn. I appreciated that they had some swatches made up of the yarns to show what they could look like. One thing that would level this up even more is having some example starter patterns associated with the different areas for folks who want to try making something from the beautiful multi-color yarn. I'm still effectively a newbie when it comes to fiber so I was somewhat overwhelmed with the possibilities. read more

I came into the store with a recently started project and a bunch of questions, and Zappa helped answer all of my questions, showcased different yarns based on my needs, and even showed me hands-on techniques and examples to clarify the questions I had. I also got to use the fancy machine to spin up some cakes of the yarn I bought, which was both fun and super useful. You'd never know that the owner is young enough to be my daughter (yep, really) but possesses an amazing amount of knowledge about trending colors and styles. I've been knitting since I was six years old, and I am pretty sure I've been to every yarn store in the bay area. Firebird surpasses them all for selection of hand-dyed and local yarns. Most yarn stores feel claustrophonic; Firebird is open and woodsy with great natural light and lots of room to hang out. Staff is friendly and happy to compare different yarns (there are so many options) and discuss the tradeoffs. Parking anywhere in this neighborhood is never fun, but worth the hassle. In my wildest dreams I never imagined that a yarn store would open up 1/2 block away from me!!!! I thought I was dreaming when I saw it. When I went in I was struck by the gorgeous light and welcoming space. The yarn is to die for. Mostly indie yarn and so lovely. There's a space with a couch that is dedicated to welcoming knitters. Yeah, you can just come in and knit. Good luck walking out without buying something amazing. They even have a space for classes. I didn't buy anything but I walked in because I was interested in seeing what kind of yarns are out there. I'm trying to get into crocheting and use cheap yarn right now, but I wanted to see what the good stuff costed. Anyway, two ladies were in the back talking and knitting and one came up to me to ask if I needed any help. She was very sweet, charismatic and knowledgeable. She even recognized my shirt (global change statement using Venice) and shared some experiences with me.
