We were visiting family in Iowa and my cousin's husband threw out a brewery suggestion. This place was packed on a Saturday with a live band and great weather on our side. My cousin and I tried a sampler which is my absolute favorite way to try a new brewery. Most of the options I went with were really good except the ginger beer was a bit on the strong side for my tastes. We watched a rocking game of cornhole/bag toss and enjoyed the sun and patio space.

Place is a lot smaller than I expected. Staff was friendly and they had games to play while you relaxed. Problem is that I've never found a firetrucker brew that I liked... not sure why but their brews just don't do it for me.

This review is more for a FYI. Fire trucker uses hand held devices so when you check out you see total and not the detailed bill. For some reason the bill seemed high for 2 beers and 2 4-packs so I requested the receipt to be sent to my email. After reviewing the receipt I was charged an additional $4 for each 4-pack making each one $16. I brought it to the attention of the bartender and he did give me back $8 but did not give me an explanation of the extra charge. You may want to review your bill before leaving. Normally I do not request a receipt but may start going forward. I was back for the holiday weekend from Illinois to visit family and will for sure double check my bill next time I stop here. It may have been a honest mistake as well but without an explanation it's hard to say.

So I was at Applebee's last week and saw a poster for a beer they have on tap from Firetrucker! Decided 20 minutes was close enough to where I live to go check it out myself. As someone who's drink of choice is a Moscow mule, the copper cat did not disappoint! I had the low alcoholic ginger beer with lime & it gave me the Moscow mule fix I wanted and a 16 oz. for only $5.25! I can't wait to go back and try some of their other beers on tap. Fun atmosphere to bring your friends and play games!

Great atmosphere with some super friendly bartenders. I've never been to a brewery with hard ginger beer on tap, and I really enjoyed trying them! Would visit again when we're in the area.

They do it right here. Always good service, great beer selection, and huge patio facing sunset! They partner with local restaurants/food trucks for dinner options as well. Definitely recommend!!

On the strength of a strong review in Juice (the social magazine of the Des Moines Register), Gayle, the Kid and I made the trip to Ankeny to try out Firetrucker Brewery. This place was a little hard to find, and a little out of the way (even for downtown Ankeny). Yet, our journey was well rewarded. This is a very handsome taproom (in an old Fire House?) and the micro brews that we enjoyed were really tasty. There's a main bar area, a separate seating area, and all the brew equipment behind the glass. Wi-Fi was strong, plug ins were plentiful, and the Curbin' Cuisine food truck was handily outside to help wash down the suds. We also enjoyed the wall art and had some nice conversations with an LSU Alumni group that had gathered near out door knob table. There's also a nice patio outside. We had a great time and hope to repeat this experience soon.

Normally I am not a huge brewery fan. BUT... This place is amazing! It is in an old fire station and still has a lot of the decor. Totally remodeled now has a great atmosphere. Outside they have a patio with fire pits and lights. Very cozy! So let's get to the beer. I love the ginger beer! They have 2 types. One is 13% alcohol! I like the 6%. They also have a tropical beer that is light and fruity. They have bike events and food truck events. If your hungry many of the local restaurants deliver. Great place to chill with friends!

I'm glad to see Firetrucker is doing so well for itself. Not only do they brew some of their own awesome beers, but the brewery itself is pretty awesome. New, modern, and clean with a good selection, lots of seating, and laid-back staff, it was a lovely experience to drink here - and we'll definitely be coming back. PROS: -Very chill atmosphere. Nobody seems in a particular hurry, and the staff seems pretty comfortable and okay with their jobs. Nobody seems stressed about pouring drinks, so it might lead to little bit longer of a wait time, but I'm just more happy to be in a comfortable, fun atmosphere. -Flights are super affordable. $6 for four pours? Hell yeah. -Well put-together. It's clear that Firetrucker is doing well for itself. Most of the seating is new, the building is well-painted and taken care of, the bathrooms are clean and modern, and there is some beautiful seating and lighting in the main bar area. They have digital versions of the beer menus that are right by the bar, and they update instantly - as in, they tapped out a beer type while I was there, and it was instantly replaced with its replacement as soon as the keg was changed. -Tons of seating. Prefer louder? There are bar stools and tables near the bar area. Like softer? There are booths, couches, chairs, and tables a bit further away from the bustle of the bar area. There isn't table service, though, so get your lazy butt up and bring drinks back to the table as you need it. -Music isn't ridiculously loud. It's louder in the bar area than the area further away from the bar. It's loud enough to cover up some of the other conversations in the bar without feeling like I had any problem talking to the person (at regular speaking voice) across the booth from me. -Has board games. You can borrow one of their board games if you're in the mood to drink and play. -Bathrooms are clean and shiny. Absolutely no complaints here - they look closer to restaurant bathrooms than brewery/bar bathrooms. The women's room had two stalls even! Less worrying about a line. -Open on Tuesday. This was one of the few breweries in Central Iowa open on the Tuesday that we were looking to hit it up. -Standard beers AND less-standard beers. You can find some pretty standard, drinkable options, and if you're looking for more weird/experimental beers, they have those too. They also have some non-beers (ciders, etc.) as well as guest pours from other Iowa breweries. I think they had 15-ish options for different beers on tap. CONS: -Nothing!

Enjoyed tasting from tonight's flight! The Ginger Beer is my new fave!

Super cool venue that serves amazing Ginger Beer! I've never had ginger beer, but it was definitely tasty and my fave from tonight's flight. Love the social seating setup both indoors and outdoors. Prices are affordable and the vibe is on point! Cheers to another round!

Awesome beer, something for everyone. They brew their own but also feature other local breweries. They often have events here. You can get growler fills and apparel here as well. Its at the end of the high trestle trail so lots of bikers come here in the summer. I love sitting outside here especially since a lot of people bring their dogs.

This place is on fire! No seriously....someone put it out. Before knowing anything about this place I had a feeling I knew where it would be. Where better than an old fire station? This place is awesome and the beer is even better. You can't miss it, they have the garage door all painted with their name on it and...well...it's a fire station. The inside has about 1/4 taken up by an almost separate room with comfy chairs and tables, there was even some acoustic guy playing here when we left. The other 3/4 is the bar, some taller tables and seats, and the brewery itself. They also have a great looking patio out back! The girls working here were awesome and joked around with us and everyone else in the bar. They made it a really fun experience. They offer a flight of all 11 beers they offer so I couldn't pass that up. WOW these guys make awesome beer. Some really unique stuff and everything is related to fire fighting in some way! I really enjoyed my stop here and the theme of this brewery. It will only keep getting better.

Burning bear stout. Great tasting beer

If you haven't been to Twisted Vine Brewing - you should check it out. Their new location in…read moredowntown Des Moines in East Village is killer. They have two bars on the inside, a large outside area that has views of the Capitol, and furniture made by one of the team members that uses floorboards from the historical building (the building dates back to 1857!).  The brewery started as a passion project for a few of the original founders who were homebrewing by opening a three barrel system in a 20 by 20 space inside Madison County Winery. Since then they have moved twice (now into this new location), as they keep needing more space and keep improving! I got their newly tapped Kolsch and shared a flight while checking out the space and getting a tour by one of the owners. Capitol View Kolsch: A Kolsch served in a German stein. It uses an ale yeast, noble hops that provide a low spicy flavor / aroma, and a light pilsner malt with doughy notes. Light bodied, crisp, and dry. Refreshing on a hot Summer day. Their flights are HUGE, so I had to call in re-enforcements, but got the job done. The flight included: First Run Blonde (Blonde Ale), Bob's Ale (Cream Ale), Cali-Steam Collaboration (California Common), DeVine IPA (IPA), Triclops Tripel (Tripel), There's An APPricot For That (Guest Apricot Sour from 7 Hills Brewing), and Copper Alt (Guest Altbier from Zipline Brewing). A couple of my favorite are below. DeVine IPA: A Session IPA at 4.4% ABV. Mild fruity flavors reminiscent of pear, apple, and pineapple. Medium bitterness and a white bread malt profile. Similar to a West Coast style iPA with some low pine / resin flavors as well. Bob's Ale: A classic Cream Ale. Light-bodied, straw/yellow colored, with a low creamed corn malt flavor. Dry, crisp, clean and easy drinking. Cali-Steam Collaboration: A California Common brewed in collaboration with O.S.H.O. out of Arizona. A slight toasted bread-crust malt flavor with a hint of fruitiness. Nothing overpowering, but with a tandem of flavors for this hybrid lager-ale style. Enjoyable on a warm or hot day. Give Twisted Vine a shot next time you are in Des Moines! _________________
