The Advocate is where Church Karens go to play "mean girls" with one another. My mother (herself an…read moreEpiscopal priest) was a member of the congregation for a decade. When she could no longer drive herself due to cognitive decline, I began taking her. Nothing could prepare me for the unkindness from a bunch of so-called Christians toward a disabled widow. The ladies who run the church wouldn't greet her or engage her in conversation; they never attempted to involve her (not even when they needed a priest and had no other); they wouldn't share lunch with her. When I brought these problems to the attention of the priest-in-charge and bishop (who had been my mother's colleague when they both started the ministry), I was told that church was no longer an appropriate place for my mother; the priest promised weekly visits to her at her home instead. He visited once, then sent someone else, then nothing. So much for "religion that is pure and undefiled is caring for orphans and widows in their distress". The current priest-in-charge is Joe Mitchell, a young guy whose knowledge of action figures and superhero movies exceeds his knowledge of the Bible. He wants to be a social media influencer, so he starts each service by instructing people to post pictures and videos on Instagram and TikTok. His sermons are a jumble of superhero references, "let me tell you about this funny Jesus meme", and Biblical trivia he picked up from studying for his MDiv. Pretty mediocre stuff, light on Biblical scholarship, and way out of touch with his customer base. As for the congregation itself, it is indeed the remnants of Lisa Fischbeck's personal cult of personality. It prides itself as being diverse and progressive, which is hardly consistent with reality. 80% of the congregation are pink-skinned ladies, aged 65 and up, who sit on their butts and pray on every liberal cause they can think of. Perhaps that's what they mean by "advocate": all talk, no action. This church shows how religion can bring out the worst in people.
