That said, sermons often feel more academic than pastoral to me, almost like sitting in a college lecture. This is a huge church and still growing--they're currently expanding the building. Because of the size, it can be hard to feel connected. Finding a small group isn't very straightforward unless you go through the membership class, so it takes some effort to find your people. I've had better luck meeting others through Sunday classes and midweek Bible studies. The kids' and youth ministries are a strength. The children's building is bright, clean, and well organized/run, and programs like VBS are excellent. Youth and college ministries also seem active and well led. There are lots of friendly people here, but with multiple services and such a large congregation, it's easy to miss seeing the same faces week to week. The biggest downside for me has been the worship music. The band is skilled + lots of instruments, but the music style feels dated and very same-sounding from song to song. The music stays in the same tempo and emotional lane, which makes it hard to stay engaged especially if you're hoping for worship that is more energetic, contemporary or inspiring. Overall, the theology is solid and clearly rooted in scripture. The church does many things well. It just may not be the best fit if you're looking for a smaller, more connected feel or a more modern worship style. Also, it may simply be working through some growing pains as it continues to expand.

Visted St. Joseph's Old Cathedral after a visit to the Oklahoma City National Memorial…read more St. Joseph's Old Cathedral was extensively damaged when a bomb exploded at the nearby Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building on April 19, 1995. The stained-glass windows facing the federal building were shattered. The pipe organ was extensively damaged. The explosion raised the roof several inches off its steel pillars. Rafters were broken. Plaster fell from the walls and ceiling. The church was closed for nearly two years. And Jesus Wept. An Italian marble statue was carved to commemorate the event. It is near the cathedral across from the Oklahoma City National Memorial. Visit the historic cathedral to learn more. Built in a Gothic Revival style, it is so beautiful. The central tower with a spire is flanked by two shorter towers. Perfect for a quick stop in Oklahoma City.

This cathedral is very close to the OKC National Memorial. It is very unique that close to old FBI…read morebuildings. The outside has a Jesus wept statue to remember the loss of the life at that memorial. The cathedral is white interior which is great for people to worship. The organ music instrument at the back was accompanied well. Acoustic is very nice for the church. The cathedral can be visit in 10 minutes of time depending on if you want to pray or not.

So many have told me they haven't experienced the friendliness, anywhere they had went when looking for a place to regularly attend a church. I love my church family. The service goes on well past midnight, and is followed by a feast. You'll be expected to stand throughout the long service unless you're quite elderly, handicapped, or pregnant. The service will have some English, yes, but go in expecting far more Russian and (even more likely) Old Church Slavonic. In other words, Russian Easter ain't for p*ssies. Gorgeous icons throughout the church. (This surprised me, given that this is not a wealthy parish -- very unlike the local Greek and Antiochian parishes in Oklahoma City.)

My friend Jean and I stopped in today at this Bethany parish for a Reformation Sunday/Oktoberfest…read moreluncheon of knackwurst, warm, German-style potato salad with caramelized onions and Bell peppers, warm sauerkraut with caraway seeds, and warm, spiced red cabbage. (Oh, and a very nice deep chocolate cake with whipped cream for dessert.) We chatted with the pastor (Pastor Gary Rohrer), the pastor's wife, and several parishioners toward the very end of the luncheon/fundraiser. I stepped into the narthex/sanctuary right before lunch; I'd always wanted to see the inside of Oklahoma City's "Flying Nun" church. (It's really pretty cool if you like Sixties Modern stuff. Great stained glass.)
