Visted St. Joseph's Old Cathedral after a visit to the Oklahoma City National Memorial. St. Joseph's Old Cathedral was extensively damaged when a bomb exploded at the nearby Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building on April 19, 1995. The stained-glass windows facing the federal building were shattered. The pipe organ was extensively damaged. The explosion raised the roof several inches off its steel pillars. Rafters were broken. Plaster fell from the walls and ceiling. The church was closed for nearly two years. And Jesus Wept. An Italian marble statue was carved to commemorate the event. It is near the cathedral across from the Oklahoma City National Memorial. Visit the historic cathedral to learn more. This cathedral is very close to the OKC National Memorial. It is very unique that close to old FBI buildings. The outside has a Jesus wept statue to remember the loss of the life at that memorial. The cathedral is white interior which is great for people to worship. The organ music instrument at the back was accompanied well. Acoustic is very nice for the church. The cathedral can be visit in 10 minutes of time depending on if you want to pray or not. read more

The church is beautiful inside and out! After visiting the area surrounding the church I like to stop inside and take a moment to take in the beauty of the inside. What a priceless honor it is to have this beautiful place to worship my Catholic religion. What is bothersome to me is when individuals that after going as a tourist or as a raised Catholic, they use YELP has a sounding board to criticize and make snide remarks. I hope by now all Catholics know that there is a series of religious classes we go through or as adults (RCIA) to earn the rite of communion. It is NOT given to protestants or to small children without receiving their First Communion Rite. The Catholic religion exists based upon these 7 Sacrements. If the Catholic church skipped over one or two of these for the sake of not hurting any ones feelings, we would not be who we are today. I encourage everyone to visit this classic, pristine old chapel. You won't be disappointed. read more

Beautiful church. We went for Palm Sunday and everyone was friendly. Go downstairs and have donuts when you go after mass.

This is an OLD church (as the name would apply) not far from Downtown Oklahoma City and near the Bricktown area. It's also near the National Monument. My wife and I were on a trip to OKC, so being the good little Catholics we are, we ventured over for the 10am Sunday mass. The church itself has been kept up very well for being over 120 years old, and mass was fairly brisk. They seemed a bit more administratively focused than I'd like, including quite a few announcements before mass even began, and a fundraiser update during the homily, but other than that it was a typical regular Sunday liturgy. They have a kneeler in the front middle aisle for those who prefer to kneel to receive communion. On the northeast corner of the block containing the church, there's a monument entitled "And Jesus Wept" commemorating the tragedy of the Oklahoma City bombing. It includes a couple of panels explaining that the church building and rectory were both damaged in the bombing, and the efforts made to rebuild after. The monument prompted us to return inside the church and inspect in greater detail the crucifix on the east wall, which was amazingly undamaged by the bombing when most of the surrounding parts of the church were. read more

I am not a religious man; in fact, I'm kind of the opposite of religious. That said, I'm a big fan of the Prairie Gothic style, and this late Victorian church is a fine example of that architectural style. Furthermore, I had great admiration for the late Father Bruce Natsuhara, long-time rector of "Old St. Joe's." This building has seen a lot of Oklahoma history, too, including the Murrah Building bombing. (The property sustained a great deal of damage from the bombing.) St. Joseph's is a great place to visit if you like exploring both Oklahoma history and Prairie Gothic architecture. (You can keep the religion part, though. Knock yourself out there, buckaroo.) read more

A beautiful church located just across the street from the National Memorial. There was damage to the church in the bomb blast but, all that has been rebuilt. There was a house in the rear that was destroyed by the blast. There is a statue of Jesus there to memorialize what happened. The inside of the church is beautiful and if you go down to the basement you can see old vestments, vessels and other things. Unlike many churches we visit this one was open and we were so glad it was. If you visit the memorial take a few minutes to see this. You will not regret it. read more

I was raised Catholic. Today our family attended this beautiful church for its historic beauty and because we are Christians who love the Lord Jesus, saved and baptized, and wanted to share with our children this Church and part of my childhood. When my children went up to the priest to receive communion, they held our their little hands and the Priest placed the representation of the body of Jesus in my oldest's hands first. My oldest walked away to skip the wine (because the whole congregation here drinks out of the same cup) and the priest stopped communion, called my little boy back, TOOK the communion out of his hand and said because he was not Catholic he could not come to Jesus and accept his body. My child cried the rest of the service because he could not understand why someone would claim to know Jesus then REJECT A CHILD from the Lord due to religious white-washed rules that Jesus did not have. "Let the little children come to me," Jesus said in Matthew. This Church is NOT a church that knows Jesus or his character. It is a religion of manmade rules that rejects children from coming to the Lord as the Lord commanded us to do...to "do this in remembrance of me." Dear priest of this Church. My mother and I who have walked with the Lord and have been in His Word for most of our lives sat in the pew and prayed for your soul. May a warning be on your heart that you have rejected a child and may God speak with you regarding this matter when you meet Him face to face at the end of your pharisee life. You will receive your reward in full. read more
