A family friend used to sing with the Simsbury Light Opera Company and she performed here today in a Modern Vintage Opera Holiday Concert as one quadrant of a quartet - mezzo-soprano, tenor, bass, and pianist. The acoustics in the church were fantastic. We heard every note on the piano loud and clear and distinct, and the three talented voices carried magnificently -- from the delicate mezzo-soprano notes to the booming tenor to the window rattling bass. This gorgeous church was built in 1919 and has amazing stained glass and ornate wood trim everywhere. I particularly liked the arched exposed roof trusses over the sanctuary.

Jesus is at the front, and missing a finger. The gift shop also hosts their tag sale in the spring, and has the Prime House sale in December. Thoughtful, respectful, positive feeling no matter who you are. Young and hipster? Same-sex couple? Older couple/single? Young family? You'll find them all, and they all blend together, support each other, and do great things in the community. After searching for a church to attend, I went to a number of them locally - some felt sad, others stodgy, some like they were in another era, and others felt pretty dead. I can see why this place is different - it's tradition blended with modern thought, with a bent toward kindness/compassion towards others, your community, etc... They have a great "coffee hour" they do after the church service that takes place on the green (or indoors during winter), where people just talk, have coffee and snacks and "catch up" or get to know new people. If you're in the market to find a great church community, and don't want a place that feels like it's dying...give it a shot.
